  1. I have an old score from "Big Sounds in Motion (1963 or earlier) and I'm trying to get a date for it. The lineup and scores were: Yankee Rebels - 81.90; Archer-Epler - 80.55; Skyliners - 80.50; Amboy Dukes - 72.65; and Gay Blades - 72.25 Can anyone tell me the date and the year so I can insert it into my compilation of scores.?
  2. I'm happy to see that Scout House is finally getting a decent start time. For some time they're been relegated to the early hours - hence some people missing them.
  3. A very minor point, but I believe the American Legion National Champion comes from the Scranton show, not the DCA Finals.
  4. Jeff, you dad is correct. It was standard in both juniors and seniors for the host corps to NOT compete. They'd often go through a judged exhibition, without their score being announced.
  5. I love these 160# stories from you young whippersnappers.... I have a leg that weighs that much.
  6. You're on Tony!! Just remember, you have to bring Donna and Freddie. And... You have to bring work gloves (two acres of flowers need weeding). And if you want to bring Andy and Sharon Lisko along too, that'll be fine. The good news??? We're there during the non-drum corps season, so you guys won't miss a thing.
  7. In looking through old scores (pre-World War II), I keep seeing reference to Houston Post #9 of Philadelphia. I realize that Reilly Raiders came/comes from Corporal F.W. Reilly Post, but does anyone know which corps the Houston Post morphed into - if any?
  8. I guess you're right, Brett. Obviously the information I was given was wrong. It looks like a great show.
  9. Well, Fran, since you've already had your share, I'll take care of John's I'll be in Hyannis right after Annapolis for my brother's birthday. The menu includes gallons of chowder, pounds of lobster rolls, baskets of fried clams, and buckets of steamed clams. I may have a heart attack, but I'm gonna go out happy.
  10. I've seen you and John in action at the Cabbyshack. It's a good thing i won't be there; all the more for the two of you. As for me, it's sushi and little drinks with umbrellas on the lanai (in the shade of the smoke and ash from the volcano).
  11. I just went to the link above and it says that the 2013 lineup will be out "soon." As for Les Dips and Hanover, they're listed on the 2013 lineup that I received. Oh well.... It doesn't matter to me anyway; I'm leaving on November 9 for the sunshine.
  12. Don't know what's happenin' here, but I received the lineup and order of appearance just today. Brassmen aren't listed. The listing and corps writeups I got was Park City, Reilly, Les Dips, Defenders, Intermission, Boston, Hanover, Sac, and Hawthorne. Brassmen will be a great addition, but check with the people in the know, just to be sure.....
  13. The forecast for Kingston for Saturday is a high of 82, with a low of 62 and only partly cloudy. This will probably be the first time this field has been under 120 degrees in the afternoon since the last Ice Age. As for the downpour..... It was great fun... And the audience stayed!!! [ quote name=elphaba01' timestamp='1375276436' post='3298944] "Who'll Stop the H2O": Good observation. Acouple years back the "Show went on" despite a day and all night DELUGE. Have no "Predictions" in my 'Olde Crystal Ball", but the scores will be VERY close, and I don't rule out a TIE. Best of luck to all. Stay DRY!!!!!!! Elphaba WWW
  14. Someone earlier mentioned "Satan's Angels." They were from Bellefontaine, Ohio. Actually not a bad corps at all. Since few people realized they were named after an 8th Air Force bomber group from WW II, the public outcry caused them to change their name to simply "Angels" at some point in the Sixties.
  15. Quick question.... Is the listing below the order of appearance? If not, is one available? quote name='BD2' timestamp='1374340735' post='3289800'] Scout House Invitational Tattoo 2013 A DESERVED SALUTE RECOGNIZING THE 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BIRTH OF THE PRESTON SCOUT HOUSE BAND Saturday August10, 2013 - 6:30pm Location: UniversityStadium SeagramDrive Waterloo, ON Canada Advance Tickets $12.00 $15.00 at the door Web Site:http://scouthousetattoo.com/ TheHawthorne Caballeros Alumni from Hawthorne, NJ Les Diplomates, Quedec, QC The Empire Statesmen, Rochester, NY Mighty St. Joe's Alumni, Leroy, NY The Optimists Alumni, Toronto, ON The Burlington Teen Tour Band, Burlington, ON and introducing: The Scout House Cadets, Cambridge, ON Closing out the Tattoo - The Preston Scout House Alumni Band Anthems to be performed by the Cambridge Kiwanis BoysChoir
  16. My first Memorial Day parade was in 1949, only four years after the end of WW II. It still meant something. Marched Memorial Days with the same corps until '61. After a break of a few years in the Army, I started doing something on Memorial Day weekend that I've continued since then. Wherever I'm living I go to the nearest veterans' cemetery (or civilian cemetery with a lot of veterans) and plant flags. It started when I went to visit a college classmate who was killed in Viet Nam and I saw that there were no flags or flowers on his or other veterans' graves. Just seems like the right thing to do.
  17. I told you, Tony, that Freddy cut rather a wide swath when he was here last year. In fact, I'm seeing a substantial number of young feral chickens running around down near the beach that look a lot like Freddy. You don't suppose that he.....
  18. Back in the Fifties and Sixties there a number of shows held during the winter on hockey arena floors - the aforementioned Rochester War Memorial, Boston Arena, Quebec City, etc. There was extremely little drill - just start from a company front, march down the floor, and line up in a concert-type formation - because a full drill show wasn't the intent, but that could certainly change. Plus... The corps then were substantially smaller than they are today. It's certainly doable.
  19. You're absolutely right, drum corps is better now - for the very few allowed to participate, for the very few who can afford to take a summer off from real life, for the very few who don't mind appearing in jerkwater towns before "crowds" of a few hundred, for the very few who don't mind paying outrageous sums to take part, for the very few who don't mind a two-month season, and for the very few etc., etc., etc. Yup, it's much better.
  20. Just based upon the numbers that Brian put up a few posts ago, you're probably correct. However, the physical size of the state is so much greater than Massachusetts. This would lead me to believe that the shows in Mass. were generally of a higher quality overall. When you can put on a show with Boston Crusaders, St. Kevin's, Cambridge Caballeros, St. Mary's Cardinals, the Majestic Knights, I.C. Reveries, and a few others day after day, night after night (and all within twenty miles of each other), I think this quality level could only be matched by shows in North Jersey. But back to the Seventies....
  21. Keith, I realize that your question dealt with the '70's, but don't forget the people (and corps) that preceeded DCI. Drum corps didn't begin with the formation of DCI. To the contrary, and as you well know, there were many more corps in existence prior to DCI's establishment. Don't pass off the people who made your drum corps years possible in such a cavalier fashion.
  22. Tim is correct in what he says, except that there were even more contests than he indicated. Back in the Fifties and early Sixties it was not unusual to have a contest on Wednesday or Thursday night because all the weekend dates were full. And back then the outdoor season was even longer than he indicated. It would start on the last weekend in April in Newburyport and finish in mid-October.
  23. And if you're going to bring Freddy with you, it might be wise to hang a little sign around his neck pointing out that he's a CHICKEN and NOT a turkey. There may be some folks around who haven't yet obtained their Thanksgiving dinner. But I am looking forward to seeing little tiny silver buckles on his chicken feet....
  24. Charlie, I know you're not finished posting these photos, but what I've seen so far has been absolutely magnificent! You're an artist my friend!
