  1. To contact Jersey Surf... www.jerseysurf.org Hope Glassmen auditionee's will consider this awesome corps.
  2. Actually, his name is Davin, not Gavin. Davin is also a former marching member of the Bluecoats and really knows his stuff with low brass. I play a Besson 967 Sovereign and absolutely love the horn. I also highly recommend the Jupiter XO series horn, very responsive. I have never played the Dillon Horn, but, knowing Matt Walters who is the technician there who designed it, I am sure it is outstanding. Good luck.
  3. Having known George for almost 30 years, he will always try and push the envelope. No, woodwinds don't belong in drum corps. Neither does electronics and Bb brass, and it needs to stop somewhere. Corps are not "Drum and Bugle Corps" anymore. Heck, they don't even call themselves that anymore. Read the trucks.....Cadets Drum Corps (not drum and bugle corps). I am tired of the arrogance to what the activity was, and should be to a point. If you want a band, form a band and leave DCI. Heck the top directors have already tried that with this Tour of Champions thing. Make drum corps accessible for the average kid, not the college music major with $5000 to spare. Sorry gang, it has gone too far. NEVER LET WOODWINDS IN DCI, unless you want more marching bands. 'nuff said.
  4. I love the speculators. I was at Wildwood, saw all the corps there, and frankly, many nice performances for mid-June. Bucs are clean, Cabs are cleaning and VERY entertaining, Fusion is presenting a nice product with a fairly small open class corps and the two class A performers Gold and Windsor will do just fine in class A. Cadets2 has not been in a field competition. Most corps in open class will sound awesome standing still. I know Cabs and Bucs sure do, so why don't we wait until they hit the field to claim their stakes to a DCA finals position? My feelings...all the DCA corps will perform well to the best of their abilities and I wish them all well.
  5. Looking forward to hearing this awesome show! (and yes, I am available to drive the truck again this Summer.) :)
  6. My son flew down from New Jersey and is thrilled to be called back to be a part of the horn line. As one of the people there for the resurrection of Spirit of Atlanta back in 1995, 96 and 97 as a management staff member, I am so proud that he will be returning to camp in January and working to become a member of 2012 Spirit of Atlanta. Awesome!!! -Bryan
  7. Got through this with only a small birch tree coming down. And the sun is now out, although it is still kinda windy. Want to take this opportunity to wish everyone safe travels and great performances in Rochester this upcoming weekend. Take care all.
  8. Spirit of Atlanta's "Delta" is meant to represent an "A" for Atlanta. They were never afffiliated with the airline, although I don't know if that was the inspiration for the "Delta". Also, the Long Island Kingsmen had an image of Long Island over a 5 spoked crown. Not sure where the crown design came from, but it was different than the one used by the local Kings Park school district which used a representation of a British Royal Crown. Ironically, the Kingsmen did a TV commercial for Royal Crown (RC) Cola during the 70's.
  9. OK, my predicition...... SOME AWESOME DRUM CORPS PERFORMANCES!!! I don't think that prediction will disappoint or be inaccurate at all. Everyone travel safe and have a great show (or shows if you are out on Sunday as well) Pretty silly for the score guessers, but it's a hobby I guess.
  10. Hey all, just saw on another post from DCA that the start time has changed to 6:45 with the first corps on at 7PM due to a lighting problem at the stadium. Just thought I would let you know.
  11. To make the statement about Cabs drill is inaccurate. Cabs were down only 9/10ths in Visual Ensemble and only 4/10ths in Visual Effect. (Check the recap) Cabs have won visual ensemble during the year, so I would think that there are some other factors to examine. I will say this, the corps performance at Toms River was a HUGE improvement in just a short period of time. Corps is working hard to be in the hunt come Labor Day weekend. I personally can't wait.
  12. Just wanted to thank the Bushwackers and Toms River East Raider Brigade, for running such a fine show. So glad the weather cooperated and all the corps did a wonderful job. Kudos!
  13. Another thing of note, the Caballeros Pit was performing on all borrowed equipment as the corps truck that carries all the equipment, broke down at the rehearsal site and needed to be towed to a shop. Thanks to Carolina Gold, Fusion Core, Buccaneers, and Cabs Alumni for loaning the Cabs equipment to perform. It is deeply appreciated I am sure!
  14. I always thought the following corps names gave me a chuckle or two: Washington Carver Gay Blades The Ballantine Brewers (sponsored by the beer company) The CW Townsmen (Carlstadt Wood-Ridge) The Surfers The Thing The Skyliners (descriptive name) The Sunrisers (also very descriptive) and my old corps... The Caballeros (which means gentlemen, but now includes women in the corps) Unique in many ways folks.
  15. Spoke to Chris Burbank, band director at Toms River HS East and this show is a go!!!!
  16. If I'm not mistaken, George is the last charter Caballero from 1946. He is still marching with the Caballeros Alumni. Amazing!!!
  17. While I tend to favor a certain corps from Hawthorne, I loved the whole DCA experience this year. All the corps that I got to see performed very well, made some great friends from everywhere, enjoyed Dinosaur BBQ, got to see former students from my LI Grenadier instruction days, and just had a great time with my Caballeros. It was thrilling watching my son march his first DCA with Cabs and I can't wait to see all the great corps again next year. Congrats to my friends and colleagues with the Buccaneers and Fusion Core on their championship wins and I loved meeting all the great folks from across the pond with Kidsgrove Scouts. A wonderful time to all. A+ weekend! Oh and the mini corps.....wow, wow, wow! Congrats to Star United, and I gotta say, I saw some amazing performances. Do it up in 2011!!
  18. I have to agree with Frank. Being an old school guy myself, I am annoyed....no better flabbergasted at the overuse of the Dr. Beat. Yes, more onus needs to be put on the drum major, the percussionists who can easily play a tap and let's preserve the hearing of our marching members. While we are on the subject....kevlar drum heads. While the original intention was probably a noble one, why do we have snare lines that sound like they are playing on table tops instead of snare drums? JMHO, nobody elses. Just me.
  19. OAS, AAS, LLS! To all my Drum Corps Sinfonian Brothers, Happy Anniversary! May the light of Sinfonia ever shine bright.
  20. I would love to see an all age corps (don't care who) play the following: Music of Frank Ticheli (Shenandoah, Amazing Grace, American Elegy and others) Music of Eric Whitacre (Equus, October, Lux Aeterna and others) Music of Samuel Hazo (Ride, Rush, Perthshire Majesty, etc.) The Planets by Holst (I know corps have done full shows on this but, add in other elements as well) Andalucia Suite....(ahem, only one corps could REALLY do this one....) Please don't go and flame me over this. It is all in fun and just some ideas. Some will like, others won't. Just a thought though.
  21. As a resident of Toms River, and a staff member of the Caballeros, I absolutely LOVE this show! LOL Heck, 5 minutes from home!!! Good luck to all competing units, travel safely and see you at East! Thank you to the Bushwackers for running this show!!
  22. I remember doing this at Randalls Island. We got one of the windows in our bus broken driving through the Bronx at 1 AM! I also remember that inspection was waved for us because we loaned much of our equipment to North Star who lost theirs in an equipment truck fire. They beat us with our own stuff. BTW, I marched with the Long Island Kingsmen.
  23. Fran, Always loved your announcing skills. Looking forward to hearing you in Scranton. Got to hear Paul Cain at Mission Drums last week. What a blast from the past! I still get nervous when I hear the YOU may enter the field in competition from the whole audience. LOL Everyone enjoy the weekend off. I know I will and look forward to the big return in Kingston next weekend. Everyone be safe.
  24. That's right folks, YOU are needed to fill out that last spot. I am retired (mostly I can't march 180 BPM anymore either) but I promise to give you my very best instruction. Now which foot do we start with??........... LOL
  25. I have to agree with Joe. Didn't see all the corps but had a great time in the lot with lotsa folks afterwards! Had to drive one of the corps trucks this weekend which was not too bad. Even getting stopped by a CT State Trooper for a DOT inspection wasn't bad either! LOL
