Pepe worked with Empire in 87. I still remember him slapping tempo on his stomach...and you could hear it across the field.

Pepe Nataro...the ORIGINAL Long Ranger!!

And I remember how he taught how to rotate a straight line:

"Preten' dere's a met'l rod, and it's goin' t'ru yer skull. Da rod moves....stay on da rod, DON' FALL OFFADA ROD!"

I knew Pepe as that guy that directed the Opening Ceremonies to the 1987 DCI Finals - all of the Class A/A-60 marching members performed Oh, Canada and Star Spangled Banner - 700+ horns. He ran the rehearsal with no megaphone from up in the stands of Camp Randall while 1500 youth milled around on the field, and we could all hear him. To this day, I can picture him yelling at the sops that took the note up (Laaaaand of the FreeEE) "WE DON'T NEED NO SUPASTAHS!"

lol! Pepe taught the General Butler Vagabonds on 1983 & i can still see him slapping his belly!

He once yelled at our drumline "I taught da horns 200 counts and I can't teach use 8!". After his outburst we were giggling and he was chuckling quite pleased at his little speech.

He was an original and I wish I could have known him better.

Funniest human being I ever came in contact with - it is my absolute opinion that he could have held his own on a stage with Robin Williams, Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor, Bill Cosby, George Carlin, you name it... just the funniest guy on the planet.

Someday there should be a Pepe story festival held after the I&E show, or more appropriately at DCI after the Open Class Finals - there was no greater proponent of DIV II & III than Pepe.

So hard to believe it's 23 years.
