Sometimes they walk around like nothing happened.....because.....nothing happened. They make choices for the good of the school or corps or guard. These decisions to retire or move on are not always an indication of their guilt. Sometimes even the innocent can't fight the system. I hope you never have to deal with the justice system in a situation where you were falsely accused of something. It can be devastating on many levels. I am not condoning the actions of anyone that makes bad decisions involving young people. Just remember.....all is takes to ruin a good teacher is an accusation from a disgruntled student or parent. Happens everyday somewhere.

youre right not every one is gulilty and but just maybe the arrogrance was there long before the person was accused. Im not saying this person is guilty or innocent but there are pleaty who are guilty. Caught or not, case dropped or not. So how do you sift through it all, I'm not quite sure maybe with eyes wide open. There have been some horrible deeds done by those who are supposed to be looked up to and YES Im sure a few some who all this has not been fair to.

Sometimes a person is accused and innocent and that indeed is terrible and then there are times an educator puts themselves in a position that they should have been smarter about and that is also unfortunate.

I know many here are very angry of even the possibility and being falsely accused is something as you say noone would want. YES there are probably many innocent people, even behind bars right now which is terrible. Maybe my issue is many of the so called players within our activity just feel they are above it all and yes do walk around like that. None of us are above anything and hopefully some have learned that.

Wow... victim? Seriously? That's not setting the victim bar a bit low, eh?

If we can get to the root of the problem here... hardworking young single band directors need girlfriends. Age-appropriate girlfriends who apparently wear dresses.

Seriously.

Many great band programs are not exactly located in hot spots of an active social life. This creates a very unhealthy work/life balance.

So, if we really want to support the development of the activity and keep talented young directors working... we should create a focused effort to get lonely band directors girlfriends, boyfriends... whatever.

Why not? :-)

Just to be clear:

Are you saying it's OK for a teacher to prowl his students provided the student is 18? While I realize it is often difficult to "read" people's intentions (i.e. the difference between being serious or sarcasm can sometimes be difficult to ascertain), this is still a dangerously inappropriate subject matter to be joking about.

If you're serious, you have major problems and clearly do not understand moral etiquette between manager/subordinate let alone teacher/student.

If you're being sarcastic then you have extremely poor judgement (or you're trolling)

I am being 100% serious. 18 is not a child. Nothing occurred that was illegal and the concept of what is or what is not moral is cultural.

I think we have moved way beyond where the topic is.

The former teacher, resigned. End of story unless the 18 year olds' parents sue or find information of anything prior to her 18th birthday. Otherwise, that chapter of the story is closed when he resigned.

Now the Teal Sound chapter of the story. They have made a decision to hire the guy. They will face the consequences of this decision. All decisions have a certain amount of risk and always have consequences. Teal Sound has determined the risks are manageable and the potential positive outcomes for their program outweigh any negative protential consequences.

We, shall see come the November camp season. We, shall see. Remember, parents like that whole easy to purchase background checker software. And, parents like to share with other parents.

Which will result in nothing, since no charges were filed, since the guy did not break any laws.

Both...you and I...speculating. We...as it is said...shall see.

Or you can read the news... which said there were no charges filed, as there were no laws broken.

It is almost like people NEED a controversy. I don't happen to see this as all that controversial. Only in the US or the Middle East would this even be in the news.

What " cultures " are 17-18 year old students " taught " to nip agressive sexual advances by their much older teacher " in the bud " and to essentially " look out for themselves " so that there is no need for a school " policy " ?

How about every culture in Western world aside from US and UK? Actually younger... than that... like early teens.

Balogna! It might not be a legal issue, I am not sure, but it is much more than simply tacky and it is CLEARLY predatory. This was a teacher/student relationship. That makes his advances, whether welcomed or not, predatory for incredibly obvious reasons. Even if it does not violate any laws because of the relative ages, I am willing to bet it violates the ethics codes of every agency that hands out teachers licenses in the country.

Words like predatory are more than an exaggeration for a situation like this.

Regarding the code of ethics...

Florida Department of Education: Code of Ethics – Education Profession – 6B-1.006 Principles of Professional Conduct for the Education Profession in Florida

Difficult to day that any of these may be proven to have been violated. Proof of this would require that the student actually make a claim that they were (not the student's parents, as they student was a legal adult at the time). According to news reports, the student did not make such claims.

Again, this issue has been blown way out of proportion. Saying something stupid, inappropriate or out of line to another legal adult does not make an individual a predator, just means they were acting like an idiot.

I don't know the guy, but I do hope he figures out how to make amends, resolve the situation and figure out how to continue teaching at some point. From what I read (and again, I am sure that is just a part of the story) there is nothing to indicate this is a pattern of behavior or that there is a particular attraction to anyone other than this one individual.
