danielray
What problem does capping salaries resolve? Not enough mediocre corps out there, so capping salaries will increase their numbers?
RetiredJedi
Universities do not draft. Why? Because the students pay the university not the other way around. Same holds true for drum corps. They don't draft but they sure do dangle those free ride scholarships to recruits tho', don't they? While we're all bored and wasting time... Who would run the Drum Corps Combine? Who evaluates the talent? Would each Corps send the caption and a few staffers to each location to scout the talent? Let's say a kid is drafted and refuses to play for the Corps that drafted them (Use Eli Manning and San Diego as an example). What would happen? Stu
They don't draft but they sure do dangle those free ride scholarships to recruits tho', don't they? And I have seen many a corps kid get alumni scholarships in drum corps!!! While we're all bored and wasting time... Who would run the Drum Corps Combine? Who evaluates the talent? Let's say a kid is drafted and refuses to play for the Corps that drafted them (Use Eli Manning and San Diego as an example). What would happen? Where would the money come from to send out recruiters to all of these places? How would the recruiters be able to evaluate individual talent while watching a 7 min. full show performed by an entire ensemble?
Stu
Are there coaching salary caps in the NCAA?

At the combine, just like in the NFL, each of the instrumentation's would do do what they do - individually. Question? Would a superstar be able to negotiate a LOWER fee to march? flammaster
What about severance packages and bonuses etc? lol sorry just had to add that one. occupy DCI now!
Stu
Where did the 7 min thing come from? NCAA scouts and recruiters go to high school football games to watch players they are interested in recruiting; the same would hold true for DCI scouts and recruiters but they would attend high school marching contests where the shows are about 7 min. each in length. A combine audition would not not show real life performance like seeing the musicians engage in real life situations. Stu
What about severance packages and bonuses etc? lol sorry just had to add that one. This is not a laughing matter. To be qualitative, an Executive Director of any major multi-million dollar corporation has to put in 60 - 80 hours a week and therefore needs that position to have a career type salary/contract (unless, of course, the person is self-sufficient enough to volunteer those 60 - 80 hours a week). So, a bonus if the director takes a corps into the top 12, and another bonus if the corps takes the ring sounds reasonable to me. Severance pay if let go for any reason other than violating the law or a certain code of ethics also sounds reasonable to me. Multi-million dollar corporations, even those which are non-profit, are businesses that require business time commitments and therefore business salary contracts.
