Up until a few years ago, the DCI telecast came on during this weekend in most areas. With the movie theatre showings, fan network, TSWSNBN, etc, it may not be as big of a deal anymore with many more outlets to watch DCI on besides live and VHS/DVD/Bluray. However, you can't beat nostalgia, and I bet I wasn't the only one who taped those telecasts and replayed them over and over again! The question is, with all the other media outlets nowadays, do you miss the telecast? Or does the fact that it's not around now not really matter as much anymore?

I always waited anxiously for our local PBS station to announce their broadcast date.

I miss Reliable Rhondo's color, commentary, and guests. But I could always do without Kurt.

I still have some of those old tapes although, with the Legacy collection, I don't watch them any more.

Wanna know what's even better? On Thanksgiving day right now, 2011:

1) I was able to watch DCI Finals on my living room couch about 12 hours after the scores were announced thanks to Fan Network

2) I've been able to watch any number of the bigger (and some small) DCI shows throughout the season this summer starting in June and currently thanks to Fan Network

3) I can watch the high definition audio/video of the Blu-rays of Finals that arrived a few days ago

Yeah, I don't miss the PBS broadcast at all this weekend, and I'm pretty satisfied (I dare say thankful...) with what we as drum corps fans have currently compared to what we had almost a decade ago

I guess I'm really a dinosaur because I remember when all of finals were televised LIVE on PBS. In 1979, they wheeled a big TV into the gym at Spirit's housing site in Birmingham, and we watched the beginning of the telecast while we were getting ready to go to Legion Field to perform.

They had that at least through the 1993 season in some areas (I have a VHS tape of the Top 6 corps from the live broadcast).

I honestly think that if DCI figures out how to stream Finals on Fan Network we will be in a golden age of instant fan gratification from DCI (heck, as I said above, the past two seasons I've only had to wait about 12 hours after finals to see the Finals performances on Fan Network).

Definitely not. I don't care about the banter, I'm pretty satisfied with all of the performances currently on Fan Network (including DCI Finals performances available the next morning), and the high def blu-rays that arrived earlier this week I can watch now.

I think I kept the VHS tape companies in business. But we only had to wait one week for the replay where I lived then.

Found a VHS tape of one the chopped 2 hour telecasts (199?) in box o' junk few months back. Just couldn't stand how the shows were chopped and the banter was horrible. Started watching it to see who was on and still can't stand it. When I dig it out again I'll put it up for freebies here (just pay postage).

LOL, hooked a family member up with a live DC webcast and her response was "Maybe I can hook it to my TV and pretend it's PBS.... nah, no pledge drives"

I miss the PBS/ESPN broadcast because in my mind, it helped lend some "main-stream-ness" to the activity. Obviously, we drum corps fans would tune in, but there was also the chance that someone who'd never heard of drum corps could stumble across it and... who knows... maybe even stay and watch.
