Why did that corps play THAT SHOW?

Recommended Posts

I actually loved that show.

Ya know... quite a few people did. It wasn't awful. It was a lot better preseason. The brass book was great until the caption head watered it down once they got on tour. The arranger came on later in the season just to check things out... and he didn't even recognize his own "arrangements"

But the preseason recording is great stuff. Better than semis, by a long shot. And the "infamous" radio section actually did usually wake fans up a little. Especially when "My Humps" came on.

1979 : The Troopers do " Theme from Hair "... including " Aquarius ". They made Finals in 12th with it, but fell out of the Top 12 after that season, before returning to their western themed motif a couple of years later with a little better competitive success.

There is a natural immediate disconnect with a NY Broadway show theme about Hippies being done by The Troopers Drum Corps from Caspar Wyoming. That said, Aquarius was actually pretty well done I thought despite the " what the heck are THEY thinking ?" reaction by many to that year's show theme by The Troopers.

Guess you weren't around when they won VFW Nationals playing Aquarius for their concert.

Cavaliers 2012.

Cadets 2008 and 2010.

Crown 2002.

Blue Devils 1998.

Blue Stars 2012.

Cadets 1986.

Cavaliers 2001.

I actually love BD 2005 and Cadets 05 and 07 (I've actually never heard someone say they didn't like Cadets 05...what a perfect production). I also just don't dig Cavaliers 2001...I've watched it many times and just feel that they were way too dirty and that the hornline just didn't sound fantastic, as well as the music not making much sense to me, but that is my opinion so it doesn't really matter :)

BK 2003- Kaval Sviri- AMAZING, best opening minute from any BK show, after that zzzzzzzzzz.... Love you BK but it's the truth:)

Phantom 98- Super watered down Pines of Rome and pretty weak hornline that year... #### them they beat us finals night! Haha

Boston 2000- Don't kill me, but I thought it was just ok... I guess the excitement of how good they got pushed this show up a peg or two, but meh. I really liked BAC 99!

Blue Devils 92- Again don't kill me but I wasn't all that impressed with the Molest Fest at the end. People loved it though and they were really good!

SCV- 2002-2003, just loved the 01 New Era show. Doesn't get enough attention honestly, but the esoteric shows the next two years were blah. Do remember a cool flag that had elastic and made for neat effects:)

"Molest Fest" - Hilarious! (And I love that show)

Agree on Phantom 98, after 96 and 97, it was, underwhelming. Especially considering the source material.

Also agree on Boston... felt like a very safe, generic show. They performed the snot out of it, and deserved their placement (IMO) but I just can't really get into it.

I'm going to stick to my era and only comment on the 90's

Worst Shows were:

1990-Blue Devils-Tommy (just didn't like it)

I LOVED that show. Such a departure from what, at the time, was their Jazz identity. Some awesome horn licks, too. But I can see where people wouldn't dig it.

1991-Cadets again, just didn't get it.

I remember seeing this show early season, and asking this of Frank Williams (who was working their brass at the time): "So, Frank, is this your "we won last year so F you" show?" His response: "Yep"

1992-Phantom which spawned the most loved "I march with Phantom cuz I can't play jazz, I march with Phantom cuz I like Strait lines" (to 1812 for those that don't know ;-p)

Though I have to give David St Angle MAD PROPS for flipping off the entire stadium on live TV during retreat when they announced Phantom in 8th, God if only Youtube were around back then!

Heh, I remember singing that wayyy back in 1984, except we sang "I march for Phantom 'cause I like 4th place" and "I march with Phantom and I am a geek". Ironically, the 84 show is now one of my favorites, and incredibly powerful. What can I say? I was a stupid 14 year old.

2004 Spirit: The Architecture of Life

Not only did I not like it, I marched it, and I feel qualified to say... it was a bad show.

For anyone who remembers that show... traffic cop. Enough said. Although the lyrics the hornline made up to go with the bizarre music were pretty good.

there have definitely been some ODD design decisions from the Spirit of Atlanta crew.

I know... the staff has changed over the years but dang...

Funny, I felt (and still feel, actually) the same way about 2002. While they were very good, I thought that the show was quite visually dirty, especially for them.

FOR the record... You are not the only one. I just have a deep dislike for Rock-N-Roll shows.
