2013 World Class Schedule Stats

I always love browsing the newly released DCI schedule, looking for interesting show names or odd lineups. I thought it might be fun to run a few stats on the 2013 lineup. Sorry, Open Class, but I only ran stats for World Class corps. There are a few shows with no World Class corps in the lineup and I left those shows out as well.

Corps Workload

There are 90 shows scheduled this year. Down a few from last year, but that might be partially due to the early finals week this time around.

Last year everyone obsessed over which corps were working the hardest. Here's your chance to get in on the controversy even earlier for 2013. Here are the World Class corps and the number of (non-finals-week) shows they're committed to:

• 22 shows: The Academy

• 16 shows: Jersey Surf
  
• 10 shows: Oregon Crusaders
  

Interesting to me is that Cadets and Cavaliers have cut back on their typical 30+ show schedule, while Crown has decided to keep doing a few extra shows. Blue Devils are again the finals-tier corps with the fewest shows.

Show Sizes

Another controversy in recent years was the number of shows with a very small number of corps. There are nine shows with three or fewer World Class corps (not counting the shows with no WC corps), and 58 shows with six or more corps. The average number of WC corps for all 90 shows is six, which feels like the right number to me.

Season Length

Academy, Blue Knights, Crown, and Pacific Crest are starting the season out early on Wednesday, June 19. Nearly everyone else premieres that Friday, the 21st. But Boston starts on the 22nd, Colts premiere the 26th, Cascades and Jersey Surf on June 28th, and Oregon on July 1.

Schedule Breaks

If my calculations are right, only three corps this year won't be taking any breaks between shows of more than two days: Blue Stars, Spirit of Atlanta, and Pioneer. Most corps have one or two three day breaks in the schedule. A few corps--Academy, Pacific Crest, Jersey Surf, and Oregon--each have an extended 12-17 day break between some shows. Here's all the data on breaks longer than two days:

Academy: 16 days from 6/20-7/5; 3 days from 8/3-8/5

Boston: 4 days from 7/8-7/11

Bluecoats: 3 days from 7/8-7/10; 4 days from 7/15-7/18

Blue Devils: 5 days from 6/24-6/28

Blue Knights: 3 days from 6/24-6/26

Blue Stars: none

Cascades: 3 days from 7/24-7/26

Crown: 3 days from 6/25-6/27

Cadets: 3 days from 7/8-7/10

Cavies: 4 days from 7/1-7/4; 3 days from 7/8-7/10; 3 days from 7/15-7/17

Colts: 3 days from 7/6-7/8

Crossmen: 3 days from 7/8-7/10; 4 days from 7/24-7/27

Glassmen: 4 days from 7/2-7/5; 4 days from 7/8-7/11

Surf: 12 days from 7/7-7/18

Madison: 3 days from 7/7-7/9; 3 days from 7/24-7/26

Mandarins: 3 days from 6/25-6/27; 5 days from 7/1-7/5; 5 days from 7/8-7/12; 3 days from 7/15-7/17

Oregon: 17 days from 7/3-7/19; 3 days from 7/24-7/26

Crest: 3 days from 6/25-6/27; 12 days from 7/1-7/12; 4 days from 7/15-7-18

Pioneer: none

Phantom: 3 days from 7/16-7/18

Vanguard: 3 days from 7/15-7/17

Spirit: none

Troopers: 3 days from 7/2-7/4

Schedule Runs

On the flip side are days in a row when corps perform their show. Everyone has some three day runs, and most people have a four day run or two (only Boston, BK, Cascades, Surf, Oregon, Pioneer, and Phantom do not). But the most shows in a row award goes to the Colts who will do five days in a row from 7/9-7/13.

Show Locations

There are shows in 37 states for 2013. California is tops, of course, with 11 shows. The listing:

Show Names

Now here's my favorite part. There are six still unnamed shows at this point. Five shows titled "Music in Motion" (four of which are G7 events), three "River City Rhapsody"s, two "Drums Along the Rockies"s, "Corps at the Crest"s and, "Drum Corps: An American Tradition"s.

We have eight Games, seven Classics, two Previews, two Festivals, two Spectaculars, two Connections, two Beats, and three Championships.

15 events use "DCI" in the name. 19 shows mention Music, seven of which are "Summer Music Games". Now that the TOC is gone, only two events promise "Champions" in their titles, and only one of those will have any actual World Class/Div I champions in attendance.

Drums are beating Brass with 14 shows mentioning drums to just 4 mentioning brass. There are nine events that involve drums either "across" things or "along" them. For brass this season you can be impacted, innovated, celebrated, and cavalcaded.

The shortest event name is "DCI West". The longest is the unfortunate "Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival Drum Corps Competition". The most literal show title is "Drum Corps in Northern Virginia".

My favorite show name has and always will be the "Loudest Show on Earth".

Nice read! Looks like OC is playing it safe in terms of their tour schedule after the switch to World Class.

I am sad to see the Sevierville, TN show gone off the list. I always loved going there and just watching the groups warm-up, and then going and watching the last 2 or 3 perform once warm-up time starts to wrap up.

This is a prliminary schedule is it not? maybe they haven't finalized their tour and will be added into some more shows.

I would be a little surprised if OC skipped the Oregon shows, I suspect they will probably be added to the Medford and Hillsboro shows, meaning their tour would start a few days earlier.

EDIT: Oregon Crusaders are listed in the line-up for the Medford, Hillsboro, and Renton (WA) shows on June 27, 28, and 29, respectively, on the DCI website.

I am really bummed that Adirondack Drums is not on the schedule. I have only missed 1 show in the last 20 plus years, and other than Rome the only other NY show is in Buffalo. Come on DCI these corps need more directors chairs.

I believe the shows you are referencing here are run by the same organizations, so the same name is due to branding by the corps running the shows.
