What is "Effect?"

Recommended Posts

Can anyone explain "effect" in one sentence? I've been wrestling with this for some time and I just don't understand what it is supposed to measure.

Does effect measure excellence? If so, how did Crown get sixth in percussion, yet easily win music effect?

Does effect measure design? If so, why are we assigning a score to the show designers who are not the ones on the field?

Anyone?

Hearing what so many on here have to say about it in regards to entertainment value, I've wondered if it was meant to be Affect instead and somebody just made a typo on the sheets.

I'll take a stab at this. General Effect is: A judgement on how well the transmission of intent was produced using the vehicle of performance (apparently irrespective if the 'audience' actually understood or enjoyed that transmission or not).

Effect is the creative combination of intellectual, emotional, and aesthetic stimuli and how well those elements are performed and communicated by the performers.

So it is equal parts WHAT they are doing and HOW well they are doing it.

So, Combia1, the GE sheets discuss 'audience', not the judge's, but the 'audience' engagement. And if the majority of the 'audience' is not understanding the intellectual communication, not receiving the emotional gratification, and not engaged in the aesthetic stimuli how then can a corps receive anywhere close to a maximum or perfect score in GE?

Effect, what one of 7 people in khaki's thinks about a corps show, usually reflective or where they have taught with, who they have worked with, who they have slept with, or a combination of any of the above.

Honestly, behind the scenes of DCI is the biggest joke. I would never want to be a judge for DCI, as they have NO credability what so ever. The judges throughout the season will pick a storyline, usually involving 2 or more corps that should be quite a ways apart in scoring. They will push their scores close together all season to make people believe that one of the corps is almost as good as the other one. Then at the end of the season, they will push a corps that should be 3-5 pionts back, and put them ahead of a much more deserving corps. Excitement, DCI sells more tickets, and there you have job security.

Yep; no credibility whatsoever:

Sergeant 1st Class Jeff Prosperie is currently at West Point as a member of the Hellcats, and serves as the section leader of the Legendary Hellcats Percussion Section. In addition to his duties as a Hellcat, he also performs with the percussion ensemble, steel band, and concert band. Jeff is a World Snare Drum Champion and is the only individual to capture the "triple crown" of solo competition (DCI, PAS, DCA). Jeff recently served for two years as the percussion arranger/instructor for the nationally televised Army All-American High School Marching Band. Prior to his position at West Point, Jeff served as Director of Percussion Studies at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, principal percussion with the Baton Rouge Symphony, and as the percussion designer/caption-head for the World Champion Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps; and as a performer under the instruction of Dennis Delucia with the Bridgemen, Star of Indiana, and under the direction of Marty Hurley in the Phantom Regiment. He actively serves as a championship level adjudicator for DCI and WGI, and as a marching percussion committee member for PAS.

Jeff earned his BMEd from LSU, his MM from The University of North Texas (UNT), and has completed all course work for the DMA at UNT. Jeff has performed, presented clinics, and adjudicated throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, and Japan as well as PASIC, TMEA, TBA, and The Mid-West Band and Orchestra Convention. Jeff's compositions and solo performances can be seen in his book/DVD "Aptitude - A Conversation in Snare Soloing" published by Drop 6. This publication received the very rare rating of a perfect "10" from Modern Drummer Magazine declaring it a classic. He can also be seen as a featured artist on the recent DVD "The Rudiment Project" by the Percussive Arts Society as well as several performances on Youtube.com. Jeff is a performing artist endorsed by Pearl/Adams, Sabian, Innovative Percussion, and Evans.
