wcmello09 Posted July 28, 2016 Share Posted July 28, 2016 High-brass, especially trumpets, hold the 3rd valve slide out when horns are down and bring it in as they go to horns up and it causes a snapping noise. I believe you can do it with mellophones but it's a little more difficult, I don't remember doing it often but it was possible and I think it was the first valve slide. The bigger horns are just the valves being released as the horns are going up. They cause more of a thud as opposed to a ping/click sound the high brass horns make. And could the hair tie cause some warping on the ring? The hair tie keeps the slides from sliding around with all the other horn movements that are common these days. Really just to show off how in unison the horns up is, to give a sound with the visual. Speaking of cool effect, though it doesn't seem to be on Youtube right now,* I love the beginning of the video of SCV's 1992 "Fiddler on the Roof" show, when most of the corps is a long line on the left goal line, and they do a short series of sequential at ease/attention and horns-up/down maneuvers. *(You might find that video if you google "scv, fiddler, 1992" though.) Harder to do today because no belt buckle. Do Corps even do parade rest, dress right, etc any more? A similar effect was when rifles taped a quarter under strap so when spinning there would be a 'click click click...'. littlejaw Posted July 28, 2016 Share Posted July 28, 2016 For us Tuba/Contra players our hands moved "down" the horn to catch the horn as it hit our shoulder. The timing is what stopped the horn from moving after being brought to playing position. The faster we did it the louder the pop was.
