I'm just sharing what venerable Vanguard alums told me about what they considered their corps' tradition, which didn't include wannabees. Most of the friends I attend shows with are Vanguard alums (early 90's through 2001), and I've never heard this or been told "hey, that's our thing". There's certainly been years they've asked everyone to please refrain from doing the yell (e.g. 2009), but that's because they felt it detracted from the effect they were going for.
