FTNK
A piece of advice--if you're just learning brass, make sure your marching, fitness, etc. are as good as they can be. I was always a fairly mediocre player, but I could really march, which went a long way.

Just putting that out there as a possible option. NEVER
geluf
Back in 2004 like twenty percent of our hornline were woodwind players that just switched over to march. We had Trumpets, Mellos and Baritones that were actually clarinet and flute players. It's very, very possible.

IllianaLancerContra
The most important quality to bring when starting to march Drum Corps is not musical talent, but attitude. At the 2000 age-out ceremony (Univ. Maryland), there was a Blue Devil who spoke - he said he started out in Corps by carrying (not playing) a baritone in Kiwanis Kavaliers. He eventually learned (& then was allowed) to play the horn, & ended up in Blue Devils. All this said, you are not going to start out by playing high-lead soprano (I still cannot bear to use the "T"-word) for BD. Find a horn you are comfortable with & that fits your embouchure. Practice. Work out to get in the absolute best physical shape of your life. Repeat over & over. Go to audition. Be the first person in line. When told to reset, run into position. 'Never'. Well alrighty then.
