Scat singing goes back to the 20's with ragtime scatting but reached an apex with bebop singers. Beatnik is a term that came about in the late 50's to describe the people of the Beat culture which had been a growing part of the subculture since Jack Kerouac introduced the phrase "Beat Generation" in the late 40's.
