The Jim Jones leadership award (Drum Major)

Oh cool!

I was just super impressed at how SOA's drum major got them through that crisis.   I forget which open class corps it was one year had a near disaster of a tear and the DM did a sweep wipe direction to get them all back on and there were a fair few of us who were "GIVE THAT GUY A MEDAL" because it was the sort of thing that often isn't fixable aside from a restart of the show.

The SOA guy's cool head got them through the silence just fine.

Sometimes heroes wear capes, sometimes they stand on podiums.  (And of course, sometimes they're doing both)

Blake is a good guy. I would not be surprised if he wins the Jim Jones before his age out.

Though it is pretty hard to win if you're not a PR alum

Heh. PR does seem to produce a lot of them.

Gabe Gallegos with Troopers was another one who grabbed my eye on the podium.  When New Road West played its last note in 2018 the emotion he'd wrung out of all of them just came to the top.

Blake is a very good guy. Did a fantastic job with the corps all year. However, I would be very surprised if he wins before his age out since he just aged out this year. 🥲

Regardless, he won the Director's Award from SoA this year and the reaction from the kids at the banquet told me all I ever needed to know about him. Good kid, great leader.

He'll be missed, but hopefully Alex sticks around and makes head major for them next year. Another really good kid. SoA's future is very bright. Texas sun in July bright.

I did not know Blake aged out. For some reason I thought he had a few more years left

Both DM & members showed poise - I suspect the members knew the choreography count by count, & the DM kept the whole thing together.

Yes; I could hear a couple of mm leaders counting on the field sitting in the blast zone.  I'm sure corps practice for an electronic failure.  I know I would. But they do practice those segments during the visual block without the front ensemble.

So much poise at such a stressful moment. I watched their directors on the sideline & of course they were crushed for the students.  But when the performance ended, they were praising the keyboardist with so much positive feedback.  He kept working the problem but I think it was just out of his purview of control.

I would guess the award is given on the merits of an entire season and not a specific event. I applaud SoA’s DM for having the wear with all to get them through an unfortunate electronics failure.

Oh, BTW, Regiment hosts a Drum Major camp every year so maybe that has something to do with their success.

There are a few things. I know in the DM circles there is talk about the award not being entirely unbiased.

Conspiracy theory or fact? You be the judge….pun intended.
