Remember "living" in the corps hall with me & Laini before tour??? :P LOL!) 84 was a KILLER show though, as was 91. REALLY makes me wish I had taken another year to get through college so I could have marched my age out year. I have to say my favorite memory of marching WAS semi's in '89. HOLY **** is all I could remember thinking half way through that opening drill move when I could tell from my "back" view that the block was rotating with absolute PERFECTION!!! I also remember at the end of Caddy of the Skies glancing over at a couple of the snares and seeing some real emotion on their faces. ####, I think we ALL bawled at the end of that performance! (At least percussion did.) To this day I wish I had that on tape rather than our actual finals performance. I am very familiar with most of their shows, aprt from 85.... until a few months ago when I got 85 legacy dvd. Freelancers amazed me once more with probably one of the most beautiful openers I have ever seen/heard... Emanuel! Awesome. Teer jerking stuff. Deeply missed! I remember before daily rehearsals started, a LOT of us would gather at Grogan's house (or was it Karl's?) and play ping pong and Risk ALL night, while I learned to get my taste for beer! lol. I swear I still play both those games with a cut throatness that SCARES the crap out of others! It's also how I learned the history of the Freelancers, because of COURSE the old videos would be playing all night long. My drum instructor goes "we gotta get timbale/bongos!" and for sure in '77 had 'em. Anybody know that guy from '76?? That dude moved to the Tenor Line in '77. He had double-jointed wrists, and played those "rolls" single-stroked.........use to blow me away with the "effortless" speed he had. The hornline had peaked, and our scores weren't really going anywhere. I remember John Zimny telling us later that he thought there wasn't anything else he could do with us. But he was wrong...Richie (horn tech) took us out in back of the high school one morning for an unusually early music rehearsal. After he warmed us up, Richie said "its about time we add some volume". We spent the next two hours on impact points, and learning to breath and fill the horns up with more air. Richie, who was usually pretty relaxed, was FREAKIN INTENSE, and pushed the crud out of us. But it worked, and by the end of that small horn block, a new hornline had emerged. When we joined the rest of the corps for production run through's, the staff nearly fell off of the scaffolding. Our guard instructor Greg yelled "Oh my god, we have a F'ing hornline, and it is LOUD!!!!" From that point on our scores improved, and by the time we reached Kansas City, we knew we were in. We scored the highest score in prelims history, placed 8th or 9th in quaters, and ultimately 10th overall on Saturday night. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Oh man I nearly had forgotten about that. Reading this caused me to get chills. I remember how shocked we (the hornline) were to see Richie practically losing the plot. He was so intense that he scared the crap out of the younger members of the hornline! That was the most amazing regersal though. And when Greg gave the hornline his "commentary", you could just see 70 chests swelling with pride. I dont think VK beat us again that year from that point forward. It was an Amazing year. My favorite Freelancer shows were from the '80's with '83 being one of my favorites. I listen to it on tape and can still feel goosebumps.
