Fran Haring
The Eastern States Circuit. Occasionally our corps also did "crossover" shows with Garden State Circuit corps. And every now and again, one or more of the NY/NJ/PA "big guns" (Garfield Cadets, Blue Rock, Blessed Sacrament, Brassmen, Muchachos, etc.) would be at one of the shows. Seeing corps like the NJ Saints develop from a lower-echelon corps to a force to be reckoned with in the mid-1970's. The Saints had some serious talent in that hornline, for a local-circuit corps.... Al Chez, Jim Brady, Dave D'Andrea, the Trimbletts, among others. Unbelievable. Going to the New Jersey VFW or American Legion shows and seeing corps that we had literally never heard of, and never saw anywhere else except at those shows. (Shadettes, Broadcasters, others.) Standing on the inspection line, and then the starting line, at those VFW and American Legion shows at something like 6:30 in the morning..... with the only people in the stands being your corps chaperones, and the chaperones of the corps on right before or after you. My junior corps not breaking a 60 for two straight years.... we were, shall we say, TERRIBLE......... and still beating a few corps in our circuit by 20 points. The folks in those corps thought we were really good. THAT'S scary. Fran Edited November 8, 2006 by Fran Haring
