Jim Anello
COOL....72 SCV photos are pretty rare! Was this concert?....was the bottle dance about to commence? Judging from the two soprano soloists out there, they're playing the music from the bottle dance, but "the musical moment" hasn't arrived. Of course, in '72, the guard didn't line up and do the bottle dance we know and love. That came later ('73?).

Of course, in '72, the guard didn't line up and do the bottle dance we know and love. That came later ('73?). We've had various discussions about this, and I'm pretty sure that at some point, Maggie clarified what the guard did when. My recollection of what she wrote is this: Santa Clara played the "Bottle Dance" music in '72, but the rifle line did not do the actual choreography. As I recall, Maggie said the flag line did a move that sort of mimicked the dance, but it wasn't the actual dance, itself. Then, in '73, the rifle line did the first true choreography to the "Bottle Dance" music.

Yes!...Looks like they are doing a kneeling type thing with their flags horizontal to the ground. Great video! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EyqpsQID_uU

lindap
July 1971. We went to this contest as participant or spectator in 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971 and 1972. Sorry about the spelling. Here’s a link, page 11 has score sheets http://delasalle-drumcorps.com/mrgall/712na/index.html August 1971. Varsity Stadium was a nice venue for a contest.
