bluecoats88
you know I hear a lot of people complain about the snare sound of today. I marched from 82-88 and am very familiar with the old snare sound and the new snare sound, and to be honest I prefer the new sound. It is much crisper and you can hear each individual note. I think the reason a lot of corps used the old sound back in the day was because that was all the technology could produce, but now that the technology is better the drum guys are going to use it because the sound is cleaner and clean is what drum corps staffs are trying to get. would you want to see Tiger Woods out there with a persimmon driver luckily getting 230 yards out of it? or would you rather see him hitting his titanium driver 320 yards? technology and improvements aren't always a bad thing. Just imagine a shortstop making a dive for a ball in the hole between short and third, but he can't get to it because he's playing with a glove from the 20's that has no extended webbing and is basically no bigger than his hand except for the extra padding in the fingers and palm. Now as much as the people in the 20's enjoyed watching their baseball, would you still want to go see a game using that old equipment? Major League baseball has throwback games where teams wear the old uniforms, but you sure as #### don't see them using the old equipment. Maybe it'd be fun for DCI to have a throwback show this summer with corps wearing replicas of their classic uniforms from the 60's and 70's

kevingamin
Have Vol I but not Vol II - can someone describe Vol II so I can determine whether to get it? THANKS! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> My articles are both in volume 2, so now you have no excuse. :P
ptr250
Paul, I swear you keep waking up on the wrong side of the bed.Let me be direct. Your distraction about the way that Junior corps is just so "not the way it used to be" is, frankly, sad. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I would like to start out by saying none of my criticism of modern DC has anything to do with the marching members. They are as dedicated and hard working (harder) than as the best of yesteryear. From top to bottom they are also more prepared and educated. I refuse to say they are more talented, but will admit that the talent is more concentrated simply because there are fewer opportunities to participate. The problem I have is how all that hard work, education and talent is used. There was a time when you knew when you where watching a top tier corps that there would be a moment when the combination of the wall of sound, movement and majesty would cause the hairs on your arms to stand on end. Occasionally you would find yourself weeping because it was so emotional. I haven’t experienced that type of emotion at a DCI event in a long time. Now it seems that many corps tries to hit you with their wall of sound by having the members scatter to the front sideline. They park and blow while gyrating their hip like some spastic Elvis. It has all the emotion of the climax of a porn movie (oh baby…oh baby). In every good size town there is that small movie theater. You know the one that plays all those foreign films and small independents, the artsy flicks. After the show the audience heads to the local coffee bar, drinks latté and smoke their little brown cigarettes. All while discussing how brilliant the director was when he alluded to the state of the world in the scene where the goat crapped on an issue of Time with a picture of GWB on the cover. A quarter mile down the road at the mega-complex the audience is treated to mindless violence and gratuitous sex. The audience goes home, cracks open a beer and discuss how cool it was when the commando shoved the explosive up the terrorist rear and blew his… The point is there is room in this world for both types of entertainment! The reality is the second movie is at the mega-complex because the vast majority prefers that type of entertainment. I believe there is room at the top of DCI for both the thought provoking and the “in your face” type productions. Lately all we get are artsy flicks! Volume THREE had better have a better mention of us in it, or I'm dipping all your typewriter ribbons in acid!

The hairs on my arms stood up plenty in Foxboro. Loved it. Want more. HH

That said, how in the #### do you intelligently answer a statement like yours? You just equated modern DCI shows to porn. That, sir, is pathetic. The funny part about your argument is that people opposed Elvis when he "gyrated his pelvis". Strangely, Rock and Roll seems to have caught on. It may be difficult for you to swallow, but just because you don't relate doesn't make it wrong.
bawker
You just equated modern DCI shows to porn. That, sir, is pathetic. You know, I heard "Sideways" (great movie by the way; see it if you get the chance) referred to last year as "wine porn". Should we think of DCI as "marching arts porn"? :P

Your conclusions are pathetic! Oh and I don’t have a problem with gyrating the pelvis if it’s real and adds to the performance. Not oh here’s a spot where we can pretend to be BD. It’s fake and phony! Can you relate to that?
