OrlandoContraAlum
I can't even begin to imagine... As so many of us, "show day" was what we lived for in HS. For these kids to deal with that sort of loss on such a big night... how sad. And what about the granddaughter's mother? To lose both parents and a child in the same accident.... I weep for the tragedy...
Orpheus
It wasn't a pro team, but on Nov. 14, 1970, a chartered Southern Airways DC-9 carrying 37 Marshall University (Huntington, W.Va.) football players, 8 members of the coaching staff, 25 fans and supporters, and 5 crew members was returning to Huntington from a game at East Carolina. The plane crashed on approach to Huntington's Tri-State Airport, and all were killed. Yep. My alma mater, in fact. As you can imagine, it's still very much a part of the school's legacy and the general public consciousness in this area. And keep in mind that back in those days, for a smaller college, that was practically the entire football team. Several leading citizens of the Huntington community were on that flight. There've been other incidents over the years, too, including Oklahoma State losing several members of their basketball team, along with university staff, the team's play-by-play announcer, and the flight crew in a plane crash just four or five years ago. Unfortunately, there is NO shortage of such tragedies, but life goes on: 1977, Evansville, IN: December 13 airplane crash kills entire Univ. of Evansville basketball team. Now, Evansville is the home of one of the newest D&BCs!
