Recommended Posts

This is a cool topic for drum corps geeks.....I'm in.....

Bluecoats Top 12

12. 1998 (Four Seasons of Jazz), solid corps in every section

11. 1997 (Midnight Blue), solid once again

10. 1991 (Palookaville, Nutville, et al) Loud, fun, let 'er rip drum corps

9. 2001 (Latin Sketches) Import corps because they started the Bluecoats current climb into the top 5

8. 2002 (Urban Dances) Just a really fun show.

7. 1989 (Johnny One Note) New classy image of the Bluecoats

6. 1990 (Ellington) First Bluecoats show to be reckoned with

4/5. 1988/87 (it's a tie) Not the best or cleanest Bluecoats, but perhaps the most important.

3. 1995 (World War II) Important step away from three tunes and playing loud, great conceptual show.

2. 2004 (Mood Swings) They did it, cracking the top 6

1. 2005 (Caravan) First top 5 Bluecoats ever....first of many to come.

The '06 Bluecoats are going to knock one of these shows out unfortunately. The show is incredible this year. Hope everyone enjoys it. Objects in the mirror are closer than they appear.......

Man, I don't know how you can put the '88 Devs in 11th. It's obviously a different kind of show that what the activity produced in the 90s and 00s but that was perhaps the best Devils show in 20 years (back in 1988). Should have won and everyone knows it. Classy, clean, big, bold, entertaining, '88 had it all. Not to say that any of the other shows on your list didn't, but you put '92 ahead of '88.....c'mon. Although '92 was a lot of fun, it certainly wasn't on the same plane as '88.

Just my thoughts from a non BD dude......

Since you said "everyone," you speak for me. It was BD's least interesting visual show since about 1973. They just didn't do anything. The hornline was only an inch better than Garfield's (Cadets' mellos outplayed them hands down); the drums were very average; the guard was a snooze. Wait. Releasing balloons must have added 5 GE points alone!

They were undefeated regular season only because it was an easy show to start cleaner than the others. Plus, there were no regionals, etc to compare them to anyone else. SCV had a BAD hornline and still beat them by 0.6.

Madison and SCV were easily better.. and Garfield (with a lifeless Copland show) *COULD* have beaten them.

There. "Everyone" doesn't think so.

What do you think are each corps top 12 shows? 1 being the best and down from there...

more clarification: the best seasons each corps has put out, for example:

i think the cavaliers 2004 were the best cavaliers corps ever. so they would be number 1

So what determines "best?" Finals scores, overall scores and placement from that season or personal favorite? It's hard to put corps who competed in the days of the tick system against later corps. As you know, in those days an equipment drop could cost you dearly. So IMO scores should not be the factor.....innovation and overall placement of the season should.

Okay, I'll play. This is incredibly difficult. I've tried to take into account show design, performance, placement, historical significance, my own personal emotional reaction to the shows, and (to the best of my recollection) the general audience reaction to the performances.

Phantom Regiment

1. 1996

2. 1989

3. 2003

4. 1991

5. 1993

6. 2005

7. 1979

8. 1982

9. 1978

10. 2004

11. 1987

12. 1984

Of course, many good arguments could be made for changing the order of this list, and even adding some years I omitted (1988, 1981, 1977, 2001, 1983, 1995 for instance). But without spending all day on it, this is my best guess.
