byline
Three of my all-time favorite shows--Garfield, Santa Clara and Phantom--are from '87, so I'd go with that year.
gellio
As someone who marched in '89, get '87 - top to bottom it's much more entertaining.
bluecoats88
I'm kinda partial to 1987 since I'm on 4th bass with the bluecoats, but other than that there were some great shows in 1987 top to bottom including the Sky West Side Story show. bradrick
It's like watching a Broadway production. That show was all about the guard, and even though I'm not a guard person, I loved it. Putting the rest of the corps in black, white, and grey simultaneously makes them an iconic symbol of conflict in the show and takes them out of the visual palette, as it were. Genius. I know the Sky show that usually gets the raves is '86, and deservedly so, but man, '87.... I'm still holding my breath hoping someone will come out of the woodwork with a HI CAM tape of 87 Sky Ryders. I know the drill that Marc Sylvester wrote for that show was really cool and chock full of symbolism (like the half black/half white dove of peace with either Riff or Bernardo being killed at the front, right on the 50...very cool B) ). sigh... but alas I've never seen the show from a high camera angle. The Legacy DVDs focus on the guard the entire time - and rightly so since they were phenomenal and the focus of the show. One of the best guards I've ever been anywhere near... xXDSFLXx
'87, '88, and '89 had their share of amazing shows... Cavaliers in 89 had some good drill, wasnt that the Firebird Suite? or maybe that was 88? cuz they also did that in 97 too... Madison in '88 was cool.... SCV '89 was just awesome and Phantom as well... Star of Indiana had a good in 89 too... or was it 88.. and dont Forget VK in 88... ;)

Ryan H. Turner
Ahem...get 1987 because "it's more fun than a barrel full of beach monkies...it's like throwing on a stack of 45's and going for it..." You know, by themselves...those quotes are very very strange.
blublood
Hey MikeBob,did you enjoy Aldershot ?,nice meeting you. 1988 all the way baby, the whole of the top 12 finalist were all quality shows, you cant go wrong with 88.
KLHilberg
I'd go for 89 although I'm biased because it was my rookie year. I loved Phantom, but honestly thought Cavies should have won. SCV and PR had great shows, but I thought both were really sloppy in finals. Also Madison had a good show that year. Ken
