DCI/BOA Merger

Recommended Posts

With both organizations now being located in the same city, and with both championships located in the same city, from a purely business perspective, this is pretty much an no-brainer and really SHOULD happen.

So much of the functional and logistical redundancy could be eliminated, saving considerable costs of operations. In addition, the impact each organization can have on strengthening the other through cross-promotion and integrated non-competitive activities would be huge.

I am not talking about a merger under a single brand (no SupaBandIntergallatic cheesiness) initially, but a parent company with each as an individual business unit (and adding/relocating WGI would absolutely be a priority), with a common purpose, but different variation of goal within the subsidiaries.

Wonder how long before this happens???

Unofficially, it already happened. Drum corps are no more. We now have DCI bands.

DCI and BOA do not compete, therefore it isn't a monopoly. There is DCA, TOB, ACC as well. Why not merge them? They are two great organizations that do great things for kids. That said, keep woodwinds out of DCI, but I see no harm in the two working together.

But, since DCI is not purely a business, your "purely business perspective" might not apply.

So much of the functional and logistical redundancy could be eliminated, saving considerable costs of operations. In addition, the impact each organization can have on strengthening the other through cross-promotion and integrated non-competitive activities would be huge.

Ideas like this might work in the world of publicly-held for-profit corporations. However, DCI and BOA are fundamentally and incompatibly different.

Bands of America (nee Marching Bands of America) is an independent entity that decided one day (back in about 1975) to start running marching band events. So they lined up a site, set a date, and started inviting bands to come to their show. That business model remains today - BOA runs shows, and bands can participate if they so choose.

In contrast, Drum Corps International is an agency set up and governed by it's participating corps. DCI is not the autonomous entity you'd like to believe they are. Perhaps we forget that sometimes, given the degree to which the member corps directors have delegated tasks to DCI staff over the years - but the corps still run DCI.

I don't think these two operating models are sufficiently compatible to permit a merger. For that matter, I don't think a merger would be wise for either DCI or BOA. Certainly, though, the points you raised about redundancy and cross-promotion are valid ones, but they can be addressed by partnership between DCI and BOA - they do not necessitate a full merger.
