Plymouth Rocks! (Part 1)

Recommended Posts

Capping the parade was Hawthorne Caballero Alumni. Lisa and I, who were doing everything right all weekend, decided it would be easier to make a quick get away from the bottom of the hill, so we temporarily planted ourselves next to the reviewing stand at ground level for Hawthorne. Much to our delight, they arced up the horn line, and blew our faces off with Larry Kerchner’s arrangement of MacArthur’s Park. WOW! Then we ran up ahead of them and listened to them rump their way by us again. I even got a salute from Frank Ponzo on his way by. How about that for making a guy feel special :-) Thanks Cabs! As usual you were fantastic!

Like I said before, Lisa and I were doing everything right and we followed the Cabs to the end of the parade and we ducked into Isaac’s for a late lunch before the post parade mob stood in line for an hour for a table. Then I headed over to Memorial Hall to catch a little pre-show rehearsal. I got there right about the time that Light Brigade was going to rehearse, and I got to plant a big kiss on the lips of my favorite Light Brigader, Smitty. Who loves you baby?! And speaking of Smitty, special kudos go out for performing a mere 2 weeks after she had a total knee replacement. Amazing! Light Brigade had a great rehearsal, as did the New York Skyliners Alumni Percussion Duet (more on them later).

Stay tuned for part 2 with more pictures from the show.

WOW JC......what an AMAZING review of this parade. I dont think I have ever read a review with such depth and accuracy in my life. It felt like I was at the reviewing stand right there next to you. And the pictures are great. Thanks so much!!!

Glad you caught the little salute.....it WAS meant for you and Lisa!!!!

Can't wait for part 2!!!

Great stuff, J.C. Ya' never let me down!

I wish I'd been there to enjoy it with you and Lisa. I'll get back there sometime. Plymouth is truly one of the finest drum corps experiences ever!

Hi JC,

Thanks for posting a great review and pics. I have a few similar pics from a few years ago, when Bob Bond and I stood about the same spot watching the parade. And of course I can't forget marching the parade with youze guyze in '99'. I've done the parade with Kilties and St Joe's (twice) and gone to Plymouth on our own (wife Laura and I) at least three more times. There's probably still a lot of drum corps people that don't know how great this weekend is. I had to miss this year due to a commitment to another musical endeavour, but hope to be back again in 2007.

Gord Moffatt

(also a Kiltie forever, regardless of where I am)

Frank... You're the man!

Cozy... Thanks brother, you're the man, too! Someday I hope to be half the scribe that you are!

Gord... You'll always be our Kiltie brother! (and I still think you were the best "Champagne Shuffler" in "Coconut" B) )

I must say " another great review of a drum corps event J.C. . Makes me feel like I was there again. Plymouth will alway be one of the gigs I will never forget. I'm not sure but I think we went in 1996, 97, 99 and 01.( maybe someone has the records ) I have the banners from those years and maybe the 2001 should be with another group. I do know we marched it in summer type weather and once in a noreaster gale. Dates I may forget, events like this will be remembered forever. Thanks for the refresher.

I remember the year of the noreaster. As we came down the turn into the waterfront, from the drumline I could see the color guard flags suddenly veering from the wind. I remember getting blasted in the face with a cold wind and rain. That was the nastiest parade I ever marched in.

  • 4 weeks later...

Twas the year of our lord 1998,Twas the great norwester.

We were issued some emergency rain ponchos at the begining of the parade.

When we came to a halt right before the reviewing stand to a Man we said "No ponchos for us. For we are Manly Men." We took off the the skins and proceeded around the corner.

Brave and True we were! We rounded the corner and got hit full blast with that wicked wind right off the water.

The rest was a blur, and to all a bit sketchy.

But none were lost and all had fun.
