DCI Rule Proposals are up

...and its bothersome how flip the electronics proposal is about "5000-10000" dollars.

To a large program, that's an easy hurdle...but what about Pioneer, Kiwanis...and those Div II's that are moving up? How does this benefit a corps that strives to move up, like an Arizona Academy, by introducing another hurdle to clear to keep up with the competitive landscape?

It's fine that Hop wants to get his foot on the door with this (raise your hand if you didn't think the proposal was coming) and put the bug in peoples ear, but, realistically...we need to get more units on a logistical even keel (more than the Top 12 or 17, anyway) with whats already passed before we can move the goalposts again.

w/Stp:

If this passes, kiss much of DivII and all of DivIII goodbye. The financials just don't work. Drum corps, even for smaller units, is already insanely expensive. Now corps will have to invest tens of thousands of dollars in electronics equipment to be competitive?

Also, I don't think anybody has even discussed the changes in staff that this will require. A new specialist will have to be hired to train the kid(s) on how to operate the equipment, program it, etc.

Furthermore, we're not talking about synthesizers and electronics to be used in the comfort of an indoor studio. This is gear that will have to survive the rigors of drum corps: the elements (cold, heat, rain), long-distance travel, constantly being moved on and off equipment trucks, getting generally abused by 17- and 18-year-old kids. Moreover, the best whistles and bells (literally, in this case) come by way of the best hardware and software, which will naturally inflate the price tag. And like any computer, it's obsolete the second you buy it, meaning frequent upgrades and replacements.

Bottom line: this will make money a function of competitive success more than ever before. Like so many of Hopkins's rule changes over the years, this favors the Division I elite at the expense of everybody else. Pacific Crest, Esperanza, and Southwind beware.

Oh, and if Hopkins insists on pestering the BoD with this until he gets his way, the least he could do is actually revamp his entries on the form. Unless I'm mistaken, his statements on the electronics form are pretty much copied and pasted from prior years.

Still not true. What about filter effects, mod wheel change, pitch bends, and if you add a kaoss pad, then you have a to more fx options... OR add an EWI in the mix and its just about like playing a real wind instrument, except that you have a LOT more options to manipulate the sound...

Except the DCI performers won't be doing any of that. They'll be pushing a button and out will come the sound of crashing waves.

So you're telling me that the problem is that because the actual sound to be edited is produced by either an analog vco, wavetable synthesis or fm synthesis, and not by a vibrating or moving part of a physical human being, that they require no skill and therefore should not be included in drum corps?

Weak.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying.

Me, too.

:(

It makes me angry.

But it makes me richer - I stayed away last year thanks to the narration thing getting out of control, but I was planning on going to Columbus this year. If this stuff goes through - no thanks.

When multi-key passed, the div II/III committee voted to delay the implementation in those divisions...if enough are against it they could do the same with this.

I like the EWI idea. You can get really creative with breath-controlled electronics. In fact the Yamaha Motif series comes with a plug in just for breath-controllers, but I think you have to do all the editing yourself.

What about laser-controlled electronics, or things like the Continuum? I'd like to see someone use Kyma processing on the field, that would be trippy.

The Akai EWI's are AWESOME... I'm probaby going to get one pretty soon... And ya, as far as laser controlled electronics, etc. Theremins (and Photo-theremins), Alesis AirSynth type stuff, Kaoss Pads... Run the pit thru a kaoss pad... TRIPPY!!! There are SO many instruments that could be used VERY effectively...
