'tis the question..

the real question is not whether to bring an air mattress...

it's who do you share it with?

04 - Air mattress. Flat by the end of the summer, might as well have had no air mattress.

05 - Air mattress. Same story as '04.

06 - Had the air mattress from '05 for two weeks. Ditched it and spent the rest of the summer without.

All in all I prefer no air mattress. It's really not that bad.

Air Mattress. All the way. No Questions about it, you feel so much better in the mornings.

Thermarest all the way. It rolls up small so it fits inside my sleeping bag. It's not the 9" thick luxury bed or anything, but it works. Most times I sleep on top of the sleeping bag anyway so that's extra padding.

Actually, Some corps do not allow them on tour. (they take up alot of space)

in reality, they do not take up a lot of space anymore. my bedding was not bigger than those who took other alternatives.

and, take a patch kit. if you do get a hole, you need a chance to fix it.

Use what backpackers and backcountry campers use, and get yourself a self-inflating Them-a-Rest sleeping pad. They come in varying thicknesses and sizes, and will expand to sleepability by themselves within the first minute that the valve is opened. Next morning, the whole thing gets rolled into a 6" by 24" package and is ready to go again. They can last literally decades with minimal care and maintenance, making them a good investment if you're an active person who likes the outdoors and isn't planning on turning into a couch potato after drum corps is done.

You can get them at any REI or other outdoors/camping shop.
