euphjock
Sad, but most public schools in Louisiana are not up to the same standards that schools in most other states are. Unfortunately, due to the excessive government corruption and lack of care for it's education system, alot of schools in areas like Baton Rouge and Lafayette are extremely rundown and in need of serious overhauls. If you want a nice housing site in Louisiana, pray for a catholic school. While there are many places in Louisiana that have substandard school facilities, not all of Louisiana can be painted with the same broad brush. In Monroe/West Monroe, where I live and teach, Ouachita Parish Schools have enjoyed tremendous community support through taxes and bond issues and are pertually in a state of building/improvementit seems. The facilities at my high school ( West Monroe High) are first rate and would compare favorably with any other state, in my opinion. We hosted the Bluecoats in 2005 and Regiment in 2006 and the staff members of both corps were very impressed. BTW, the state seems to headed a much better direction educationally. Not only are test scores up, but today the Legislature unanimously approved the highest raise ever for teachers in Louisiana. Maybe now the great directors from Louisiana that end up moving to Texas will consider staying here. There ARE still places in Lousiana that are great areas to teach, live and raise a family. skajerk
Gotta ditto the Miami sentiments. Out of the 5 places I've been for finals (Miami, Atlanta, Madison and Scranton x2) Miami is at the bottom for all the reasons already mentioned plus all the fly overs by the airliners. MelloSteph
Doesn't really sound like Walnut ... It's a nice community with some fairly upscale homes. Mt. SAC is in a pretty good neighborhood as well. Doesn't even begin to compete with dives like the Manning Bowl (torn down I believe) and Randall's Island. They were staying (well... according to the schedule on their website) at Riverside King HS - which is closer to Moreno Valley than Walnut.... I'd venture it's about 30 or more minutes from Walnut. Why is it that DCI has all these events in dangerous places? Aren't they concerned about the safety of their corps? I don't know that it's the events themselves that are in dangerous places, but more that the schools that agree to house corps are not in the best areas. A lot of times those are the ones that with the right teacher/student involvement can benefit most from a corps being housed there... so it's kind of a toss up. With the exception of Championships and focus shows, DCI goes off of what the tour event partners come up with for most of the tour.
neddy
Dutch Boy has been to some crappy shows / areas. 1. - 1984 Atlanta - we were actually chained into the gym at night for sleeping and had armed police guards stand watch all night. We came back to the school after competing and were told that we were switching schools ASAP and they crammed us into a housing facility with 2 other corps/ 2. - 1987 or 1988 can't remember which year - Birmingham, Alabama - females were not permitted to go anywhere without a male escort after we performed - Our director made the entire corps wait for the guard while we wrapped and sorted our equipment so they march us back to the equipment truck. I'll agree, West Monroe = Great. But that's not how it is south. Baton Rouge and Lafayette public schools are falling apart.
ScribeToo
Why is it that DCI has all these events in dangerous places? Aren't they concerned about the safety of their corps? Of course they aren't! DCI knows better!! This kind of thing can't be taught from books! Only real, living, breathing experience can bring this lesson to life and there's only ONE WAY TO GET IT!!! "PUT THOSE KIDS RIGHT ON THE FRONT LINE!! It'll toughen those sissy kids up.. put hair on their chests!" I heard Dan Acheson say that exact thing once. I swear! /sarcasm. Tom D'Bomb
I wasn't there but I heard that : Beirut, Lebanon - "Drums Along The Fatwa" was pretty rough. Some corps playing an all Cat Stevens show swept all captions.

George82
Lynn Mass, which no longer sponsors a show because the blew up the Manning Bowl. The show, including corps and fans are great. It is just in Lynn, Mass which is very ghetto. The saying goes: Lynn, Lynn, the city of sin... If it ends up on an episode of "COPS" chances are it's a GHET-TO!!! Honorable mention to "Drums Along the Slums" in Huntington, WV.
somerville
Please welcome CarolA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-AL-ina Crown! Phantom's burkas looked amazing at that show. They were able to keep their ankles from not appearing even while doing intricate demanding guard work.
