Pacific Crest

I'm curious for the opinion of anyone who has seen Crest... does it not seem like the narration is right out of a WGI show? It seems like they have to set the scene each time via a quip or statement about what's going to happen. It all seems to have the styling of a winter drumline, trying to match their props and rammajamma with a loosely associated theme.

I guess I should have expected this route eventually, but a D1 director once worried about DCI shows becoming just like WGI in that way that it may not be a narrative, but that a show is reduced to the conveyance of the words setting the tone, and gluing it all together with somewhat tied-in tunes.

I guess I was disappointed in thinking back to some prior Dutch Boy vegas shows, and not needing to be told about the vegas theme, but rather experiencing it through the performance. I don't mean to harsh on PC for their show, but rather I lament that the vision of WGI shows becoming the paradigm DCI latches onto is indeed very new, and I have to say it's much closer than I'd ever hoped.

Is this the future? Is DCI going to become a lot more like WGI percussion shows are now?

Do designers think that audiences are that dumb and don't get it?

Pretty much, yeah.

I only heard a couple of the narrations. They were distracting and I really followed the show without through the music.

Was it really necessary to say "Do you feel lucky tonight?" then play "Luck Be A Lady Tonight"? Do designers think that audiences are that dumb and don't get it?

"Do you feel lucky punk...do ya?" :P

At the Walnut show, whenever the PC narration occurred my 12yo daughter would look over at me with this annoyed "what the heck is that?" expression on her face. If that doesn't say it all, I don't know what does.

Totally not necessary for their show. Very distracting and imo probably costs them points.

I think incorporating more of the visuals you would see at the casinos into their show would be more effective than vocals. For example, the 2 guard members who hold up the props, which are dice. Why not incorporate the dice into marching formations, rather than using props?

I also think that it would be natural if the guard unis for the females would naturally be showgirl style (conservative) .

It will be interesting to see how this is rewarded by the judges. Or not.

Narration is very common in BOA and (somewhat) in WGI. I have seen it done well a few times, but mostly not so good.

But it all comes down to this - if judges reward it, others will add narration. Hopefully the judges won't get carried away on this bandwagon, just because narration is the 'flavor of the month'.

Be strong, adjudicators!
