There are already District and State Festivals for Solo and Ensembles through the public school systems, what is DCI's point in doing this?

No it doesn't, Mike...don't lump those changes into this. This is woodwinds in the I&E of drum and bugle corps. No one has said "lets go back to G" or something along those lines...so don't even start with that straw man argument. Your "point" is to just to try to paint anyone resistant to this as not really behind the "music education" mantra that this is given in order to pass it through.

All of the other things you mentioned are changes, true, but not the point of blurring the lines of what the drum corps brand/idiom intrinsically is.

So, sugar coat it how you want, it's not something that DCI should be doing, unless it changes its name.

It doesn't need to be sugar coated. It's a solid idea that stands on its own. More time is needed to get the word out to other corps members who might be woodwind performers first and took up brass as secondary instruments.

I've long said that drum corps IS whatever it BECOMES. And no, that doesn't mean I'm ready for woodwinds on the field nor even think it should happen.

I'm kind of surprised no one's pointed out yet that what used to be named "Sopranos" in the I&E results is now named "Trumpets."

I also wonder how many who will complain about this were there to support the kids in I&E, or intend on ever attending an I&E event at Worlds.

Okay, with that I might have PO'd a few people and it's definately time to go to bed because I'm beginning to let my "don't honk off the readers because I want to be everybody's friend " shield down.

I think all can agree that I&E needs some kind of boost.

Half of the top 12 (from last year) have NO PARTICIPANTS

in this year's event.

tell em that the kids deserve to go and you won't lose that precious .1 to give a great musician a chance at a moment in the spotlight

It's part of the overall insidious plot to get us ACCUSTOMED to seeing reed instruments in the hands of actual corps members.  That way, when WW's get voted in against the wishes of the fan base (or at least part of us), the #####ing will be minimal as our subconscious mind will lull us to just accept it...it'll be oooookay...this won't hurt a bit...you've seen this before...

Just sleeeeeeeeeep now everyone....go to sleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep....

Everything will be fine when you wake up in the morning....and realize...DCA is still here.

They just better do it AFTER I age out :(

Ok, this is my favorite part:

Oregon Crusader timpanist Christine Bedard played “Con Pastorale” on oboe. She introduced her piece by lifting her instrument and saying, “This is an oboe for all you brass players out there.” King laughed and responded, “This is probably the first time in DCI history that we’ve had to introduce an instrument.” Bedard earned a 97.5

I don't think its humanly possible for my eyes to roll any farther back into my head than they are now. "This is an OBOEMOBO children! Can you say OBOEMOBO? I knew you could! Betcha never seen one of THESE before you backwards twits!"

If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck.....

I didn't believe the hype...but it is happening. Not for it, not against it, kinda curious what marching band would be like at the top level.....

"Bell front" flutes? That oboe is already "bell front".....saxes would work too, but not bassoons.....amplified strings? Can you march with a violin? If you amp it....do you need more than one of each? Or three of each?

Maybe if 2010 sees woodwinds, we'll see 100 drumcorps in 2020....

Months to ponder the possibilities......sigh.

:rock::rock: :( :rock: <_< :) :huh:

I've long said that drum corps IS whatever it ultimately BECOMES, and that is constantly changing. That doesn't mean I desire to see woodwinds on the field any time in the near or far future.

I don't mean you personally, but I wonder how many people upset at this have attended a DCI I&E event in recent years or have any intention of attending one in the near future.

Solid ideas don't need sugar coating. As for a name change, we all know that "Drum Corps" International includes drums AND bugles AND guard, and that some bugles are really trumpets and tubas and guards are really auxiliaries that feature more dance than guarding anything.

Many members of corps are not brass majors at their schools. This gives them a chance to show that corps members are a diverse lot who ultimately come together to entertain and enthrall the masses on the field.

One more thought:

I'm really good on skateboard, can I show up at I & E next year and compete? (please ignore the fact that i aged out in '90)

I've been to I&E plenty, if it really comes down to "being there" that in order to have an opinion on things. I would hope not.

Again, don't deviate from the argument with "what we call a horn nowadays". That's not the issue. Let me use some of your own straw man logic, though...and let's just say this is the first step towards seeing them on the field. Oooh, I got everyones attention there as being an alarmist! That what you're trying to do?

Of course it's not...that's irrelevant to the issue, so let's stop it.

However,DCI may be whatever it becomes, but adding woodwinds to I&E shows that you do not service just drum and bugle corps anymore. It's not DCI's place to become a wayward home for woodwinds. The tradition of DCI's mission statement for drum and bugle corps rings false.

Is it a "solid idea" since Dan orginiated it? Or since Jeff sponsored it? If next year only eight people show up, is it still a viable avenue? Where's the measure of success or failure?

BOA clinics, fine. "Music is Cool", fine. However, "music education" is not a catch all for every change or suggestion that people want to put through...and, honestly, if you have something to say, I'd advise airing your opinion. I doubt that you'd lose any readers due to it.

DCI, while a great organization, is no more above criticism than anything else in these great Unted States. :)

However, as a reminder to myself, and others who feel as I do ...DCI will do what DCI wants to do...no matter what.

Are you serious!? I probably would have yelled an obscenity and walked away. Excuse my brashness by #### that :sshh:

But whatever, I guess woodwinds will add sophistication to the DCI ranks  . This is completely ridiculous.
