  1. It should be said, and I should make clear that I am NOT with Cheshire Cadets anymore and my comments and thoughts are my own and NOT necesarrily those of the Cheshire Cadets and their staff or management. I worked with them in 2004. That said, they are doing fab. I went and checked them out a couple of weeks ago. Numbers are up by quite a bit, although they are still very young (guessing I would say average age between 10-12). Biggest jumps in members are definitely in the battery and guard. Drill looking good and mostly done. They are doing a James Bond theme this year and are competing in BYBA. Personally, I think DCE would be lost them as they are so young and the competitive side is not the end all be all there. They are there to have a good time and entertain, and when you really stop to think, that is really not such a bad thing! Best of luck to you guys this season. I really dug you last year!
  2. The other thing to take into consideration in the UK is that schools dont have music programs like they do in the States and as such there is not a ready batch of talent to choose from. The corps that I woked with (Cheshire Cadets, formerly DCUK now BYBA) dealt with kids that never EVER touched a musical instrument before, from ages anywhere between 8 and 18, and never turned anyone away. A lot of the "kids" that are marching in the top UK units (Sens, NS etc etc) are infact the kids of those who marched in DCUK's 'glory years' of the eighties. It is a fact that many of the big name corps in the UK dont actively go looking for kids, and the ones that they do get marching in their feeder units arent up to par performance wise when they are needed to go in the big corps. So when the current crop of kids was reaching the age limit, corps such as the Senators, Northern Star, Kidsgrove etc quite frankly got really old and had to make a decision... Go all age or stay in DCUK and not put out as high caliber of a product that they have been in the past. DCUK totally missed the boat. Add that to the fact that DCUK became so Top division oriented and didnt really give a toss about the lower division corps, loads of units left for BYBA and DCE and left DCUK with a grand total of 8 corps. That does not a viable circuit make!
  3. I remember that rehersal asw ell. I got goose bumps reading your post. Richie was frickin INTENSE that day! He was the most mild mannered guy you could ever run across but that day he was a MONSTER. I always felt that he was one of our most underrated instructors! BTW, I voted for 87. Nobody expected a dang thing from us and boy did we ever surprise!
  4. I realise that I am a mod and I am supposed to be kinda down the middle on most things but I thought that (the narration) stunk. Great way to ruin a good music book. Just because we CAN use amplified voice in our shows doesn't mean that we MUST.
  5. If I cant pick my corps ( I marched 92 Freelancers )... For me it is a dead heat between 88 Sky Ryders (good competitiors with a really good show) and 2002 Cascades (crackin hornline).
  6. To give you an idea HOW good their horn line was, I remember our horn tech Richie Hodge actually MADE us go sit in the stands to watch them because "THAT was what a hornline SHOULD sound like!!"
  7. From the DCP Community Guidelines... Furthermore, we have been down this road with you before, AND, this is the wrong forum anyways for announcements! Topic closed.
  8. In light of the current situation AND the fact that so many DCPers are college age and either attend VT or know someone at VT, yes this is appropriate here today. So much so that I am pinning it. I will review this one after a couple of days.God bless all those affected by this terrible act of criminality and tragedy.
  9. Loved Garfield...1987 is my all time favorite DRUM AND BUGLE CORPS show... That said, I absolutely HATE YEA!
  10. More "Marching Music Ensembles" than you can shake a stick at !!! LOVE IT!!!
  11. Freelancers and VK was pretty intense at times... Also, Freelancers and Boston became fairly heated around 1990-1991.
  12. Might I remind people that a serious crime took place here. Rumors and innuendo should not be discussed publicly here (DCP). If you want info, or have information to share, try emailing or PM'ing the folks at KK or PPT directly or contacting the local police directly. I am certain they would happy for any information. Spreading unsubstantiated rumors about "inside jobs" and the like could be the absolute death sentence for this corps and I for one will not allow DCP to be part and parcel to possibly killing off a corps. That is NOT what we are all about. I hope the folks at KK can recover all if not at least most of their instruments, and if not, I hope that the insurance comes through for y'all. If you have any other news to report, then please by all means, start a new thread, but as this one has become nothing but a rumor mill, I would say it has pretty much run it's course and is therefor closed.
  13. What Lance said... Furthermore, what you need to understand is that DCP is not a public site. It is privately owned and that owner (JohnD) has laid out a very strict set of rules he expects members to follow. When you sign up to this site, you agree to abide by the terms and conditions of the site and those are found in black and white in the Drum Corps Planet (DCP) Community Guidelines, which by the way can be foun on the top of every single page in the DCP Forums. Mods are not "powerhungry" or "over-zealous". We do not have any alterior motive, nor are we superior to anyone else. We are simply a group of members that have been asked to and agreed to help enforce the rules here. If you would like to discuss this further, feel free to PM me.
  14. OK, I am gonna make this pretty simple... Get back on topic NOW or I am closing this thread. Name calling and flaming of other members WILL NOT be tolerated and if this concerns YOU (you know who you are), consider this a first and last warning. I too am getting tired of threads being hijacked but the "new school" is just as guilty as the "old school" and personally, I am getting tired of refereeing childish arguments.
  15. I thought that Sens pwn3d the field but the DCE judges thought otherwise. I think though that it was really no contest between them ant Northern Star.
  16. Off Topic. Feel free to PM me if you want to discuss this further. Closed.
  17. This has nothing to do with the original topic. If you want to talk about corps debts, then start a different thread.
  18. Validate that statement please because from where I am sitting it just looks like a blatant personal attack.
  19. It was just a hype. It looked cool as hell and nobody ever walked through our horn block. It was also an honor to be a block guard. One of our instructors, a guy called Michael Grogan, made the Freelancer Battle Axe for the corps rebirth 1987. He used to carry it with us as he marched the corps down to the field. He saw it as escorting us to the field of battle. The Freelancers hyped on all things medieval. Our name was medieval in nature. We were really into chivalry, A Freelancer NEVER walked alone in uniform and a female Freelancer NEVER went anywhere unescorted. It was also expected that her escort would lay down a gauntlet for her to sit on (this looked cool but it also kept their unis clean).
  20. Oh Dear God Montreal, 1989, Spaz and ElToro Tequila. Suddenly my alltime worst hangover has returned!
