  1. I didn't know Dan was a judge these days. Marched with him my entire time at Freelancers. He is a good guy. Had a chance to take out the Monster Man, Gene Montrastelli (sp?), but as I had far too much respect for the man, and I didnt have a playing part at the moment, I warned him and he got out of the way. He thanked me for it on the judges tape though.
  2. Moving this to the appropriate forum and pinning it there.
  3. From a Santa Clara Vanguard press release: The Santa Clara Vanguard is pleased to announce its purchase of 64 new brass instruments from the Yamaha Corporation of America. Negotiations have been ongoing for the past several months culminating in an agreement in early March. The decision for SCV to transition to Yamaha horns was based primarily on Key Poulan’s (program coordinator and brass arranger), recommendation. “I’ve been playing on Yamaha brass since 1984 and I’m convinced that the consistency of pitch, evenness of tone quality in all registers and it’s overall reliability should have a very positive effect on the performance quality of the Vanguard horn line.” Read the rest of the story here.

  6. I said 86 simply because it was a very entertaining show. Also, kinda became their legacy. Moving this to the Historical Forum.
  7. Call me a bit of a "homer" if you will, but I have always beena fan of the mid eighties Warrington Green Lancers.
  8. 1992 1991 1993 1985 1989 1990 1988 1987 1986
  9. Yep. Thats the Brig allright. I still am amazed just how much stuff we got in it prior to leaving on 2nd tour in 1990. Charlie Anderson drafted in a crew of horn players to load it. As I recall, it ended up being about a ton overweight when we crossed the scales in Utah. Many many memories of that fine vehicle for many a Freelancer!! I remember mooching a lift in the Brig as often as I could because the driver liked me in 87 and it also was the only vehicle outside the General with working air conditioning!!
  10. 1985. Just plain, fun drum corps, followed closely by 1987.
  11. What about 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988 or 1989? Besides, this belongs in the Historical forum anyhow. Moved
  12. Thanks mate. I loved The Kiss. The DM by the way was Chad Humpal
  13. It warms my heart to see y'all showin SAC some love!
  14. no Dave. I think he was talking about the "DOO-WEEEE-UHHHHH-AHHHHHH!!!!" at the end of Bells. You know where all the upper leads did our best to imitatea French Horn line?? Yeah, that was fun to play!
  15. It should be noted that this didnt exactly happen overnight. VK was having organisational issues with money for several years prior to folding.
  16. I think that the 88 show was probably a better overall show, but it wasnt quite performed to the level that it should have been. I think that the corps in 89 came out of the starting blocks with a "dont #### with us" attitude and absolutely nothing would stop us from the big show in KC. If you really wanted to appreciate that show you should have seen us at semi finals. That show was purely magic. I remember coming of fthe field and circling up around Paul Zimny and I swear to God the whole corps was trembling with the excitement that we just kicked tail. Cant disagree with you there. Thats why I cut up my semi finalist patch and sewed it onto the sleve of my corps jacket in little pieces. Yeah, that was a cool rivalry. We didnt take kindly to having our ranks broken into. Did you ever see someone try to break the Freelancers ranks? They usually bounced right back out. We liked to use all the field we were allotted at retreat. All in good fun though. If I am honest I didnt like you guys that year all that much *at that time*, but now I think you guys had a great show. You had some seriously wailing sops that year! UNfortunately I dont think that will ever happen again....
  17. We used to get in trouble for that when we got our new horns in 91 but we did it anyway!!
  18. Stu... As far as I am concerned you could put Freelancers on your sig line. I know how you feel about the corps and you my friend (no matter our differences) I consider to be one of my Freelancer brothers.
  19. I am interested in hearing memories of corps that are no longer with us. This week, I am going to be a bit self indulgent and ask you all to share your memories of my alma matter, the Freelancers. WHat were your favorite shows? Did you ever march with SAC or even just hang out with us and have some cool stories to tell? If so please share. This is after all the Historical Discussion Forum and I for one would like to re-visit history. To start the ball rolling, my favorite shows were 1982 and 1984. I can not decide which one I like better. They just seemed so relevant. The corps those years had a very hardcore feel about them and they just exuded confidence on the field. Gengi, Sunshine, Power Suite and Bells are my all time favorite Freelancers tunes and I would give an awful lot to be able to line up with my Freelancer brothers and sister and play these tunes again for all the world to hear... Just one more time I would love to hear my three favorite words in the English language......... SAC IS BACK!!!
  20. I used a Schike as well. The 52E2 ARTIST MODEL. It was created for Thomas Beversdorf of Indiana University. The very deep "E" cup and narrower #2 rim makes it an ideal symphonic mouthpiece.
  21. Money cant buy in tune hornlines. Money cant buy no missed releases. Money cant buy a clean drumline. Money cant buy good crisp guardwork. No. Star of Indiana 1985 was bought and paid for by the marching members blood, sweat and tears. Y'all came, y'all saw and y'all kicked ###! My hats off to you.
  22. I still remember 1989 when you guys would throw reeses pieces into our retreat block while your contra line swung an ET doll over our heads. I also remember at Finals we stomped about 128 bananas into the turf at Arrowhead. Ah that was a fun rivalry.
