  1. Flam,

I have a daughter in SCVC's guard and was at the show the last two nights. Just wanted to pass along to you that BDB seriously frickin rocked the house Tuesday night- they layed out such an intense show and the drum line is the BOMB. Please tell your son they are GREAT and the whole corps should be very proud of their work and the passion with which they performed. TW San Jo...

  2. Glen Crosby added to the percussion staff. http://carolinacrown.org/web/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=592:crosby-crown&catid=19:carolina-crown I think this is a great move for them, looking forward to seeing them this summer.
  3. Pulled out the yearbook to see where we went that summer – looks like Corpsreps is missing a show on June 19th, and we were also scheduled for Ogden UT but had to scratch due to a nasty bout of blue flu that took out half the corps. The yearbook also lists 5 exhibition performances at various points over the summer, so those wouldn’t be tracked in a score database. No doubt that Cadets and everyone else probably had their share of exhibitions that summer as well.

  5. I didn't need a mic... jk Did I just say that? Another thought on 82 - 12 Snares was frickin huge, and the 82 line seemed really imposing because the 5 middle guys were all 6 ft +. It was a hard hitting line too... Always loved it when Red would unload on that bottom bass - you could really feel it in your gut. Float always liked to have a real thumper on the bottom. I sometimes still use as part of my warm up before gigs, that fast "ramming notes" ending section of T.O. I try to play it up to tempo but usually fail miserably.
  6. Scarlet... Thank you for sharing these memories. I've thoroughly enjoyed reading them. The passages I highlighted above really struck me as being the ultimate reward of the drumcorps experience: Everyone pushing their personal performance envelope beyond which you thought possible & the synergy of the entire corps becoming much more than the sum of the parts. Memories of that feeling, of the magical performance energy of late season and finals week is something that I truly treasure. Thanks for sharing your experiences.
  7. A couple of random memories from 82 BD early season, moments when I realized that there was something special going on.… Mid / late January rehearsal – The hornline plays all the way through T.O. for the first time for the drumline. When they get to the extended soprano segment in the middle of the tune (where they repeat the melody up one octave), it was so together, especially for January, that I was just grinning and thinking “holy sh**, they’re even better than last year”! April timeframe – We were going to debut the re-arranged Chuck Corea as part of a standstill performance at a guard show. Drum parts hadn’t been handed out yet, so we did that part of the show with Nat Barouch on drumset, Guy Hilsman on percussion and me on timp. We hadn't heard the new version yet so during a last minute rehearsal, Wayne explained to us the changes made in the back half of the chart from the 81 version(the soprano cadenza, the divine chords and the up tempo ending) and we took a crack playing through it. After the first run through with the horns, I was just… I don’t know….just giggling… the hornline was so powerful, like a big angry beast. one Spring camp... date lost in the haze of my fading memory.... Seeing Stacey Lynde and Shirley Stratton experimenting with the wing prototypes and thinking that is really cool and different Fun times... It's a real honor to see that people still fondly remember our show from 27 long years ago. Thanks all for the kind words.
  8. The "no wheels" rule was still in effect in 1981. To get around the rule, Thomas Nanni came up with the idea to put black PVC pipe end caps over the wheels. They were kind of like a cup that was big enough to completely cover the wheel and the bottoms were smooth & slightly rounded so it was relatively easy for me to drag them on the field (also without crossing over the front sideline). In 1982 the creation of the pit area made the wheel rule a moot point. TW
  9. Correction.... I'm pretty sure the Blue Devils had a 12 year run in the top 3 in the mid 70's to mid 80's (1975-1986)
  10. One of my all time favorite drum "features" is 79 SCV - Not the solo Lezghinka, althought that is obviously great, but rather the percussion scoring for the closing number "If you believe" (starting at 10:40 on Fan Network). Plenty of notes but not overt - always in support of the flow of the song, just really subtle, cool and musical - Favorite parts: The opening tenor / bass drum lick capped by the cymbal zing, the tenor line feature starting at 11:00 while the drumline grooves backfield, locked in perfectly with no front to back phasing, the perfectly tuned basses transitioning to the open roll passages in the chorus part of the tune, and the phrasing of the sextuplet patterns of the whole line during the push. I really encourage the younger gen to check out this great example of the musical genius of Fred Sanford
  11. More over the top behaviour - the director is filing a complaint against his own band, apparently he has little back up from the administration. Director files complaint about UC Davis band http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?.../MNM7135E1B.DTL
  12. Torn between 79 & 82 because of the surprise factor. I'll have to be a homer and vote 82, since my sister got to perform it in her rookie year in SCV's guard. During finals week, SCV used to always stay at a hotel. Rumors had made their way back to the BD camp that the guard had been "disappearing" for hours at a time to rehearse behind closed doors in a ball room. So with a reasonable suspicion of what they must be up to, one evening I called her room to razz her about it and try to get her to leak the secret. To her credit she kept her lips sealed, even to her own bro. Drum corps is thicker than blood.
  13. LOL We used to lovingly call those "C***(male chicken) Blocks" Esch...what years did you march SCV timps? The time I first noticed SCV timpani (circa 77-78), they were carrying the Slingerland drums on harnesses, lower height, midway between chest and navel. These would have been the red drums with the white chevron type shape on the front half. Any idea of when SCV made the change from the high profile to the (slightly) lower?
  14. I can confirm that the SCV and BD photos are not from 82 - SCV had the steel drums in 83 only, BD first used the tuned Paiste Gongs in 83, the 2nd year of the Paradox drum solo. Good times
  15. Anyone know any more details about the 2007 INT Cheating Scandal and it implications on the activity? I'm referring to their use of illegal electronic scoreboards used to enhance their GE score - It undoubtedly is giving them undue credit for to their ability to better convey their show concept. ($1 to Cowtown)
  16. Jeffe, I was intrigued by the question someone raised about close seconds / ties etc so I started browsing corpsreps.com. I noticed that on your chart for 1988 you had Santa Clara listed as taking drums but Corps Rep shows Cadets up a 1/10th in the performance caption at 14.9 to SCV's 14.8. Just curious if you have a different source or maybe corpsrep had it listed incorrectly. It appears the judging methodology changed that year, with 15 pts for performance instead of 20 so is it a possibility that GE percussion was combined with performance to determine the drum trophy? SCV was up substantially in GE perc, so on that premise it would certainly put Jonz up on top. Just curious... Cheers

  19. Wow, hard to believe it's been 25 years. We were at the SCV homeshow, Pacific Procession, this day 25 years ago. Position Corps Score 1 Blue Devils 81.550 2 Santa Clara Vanguard 76.950 3 Freelancers 69.150 4 Sky Ryders 67.150 5 Troopers 55.250 6 Valley Fever 54.200 7 Seattle Imperials 49.750 8 Velvet Knights 43.600 9 Blue Stars 30.100 JD - I saw Phantom from up above at DATR that year - you guys friggin rocked - First impact wow! This was a rare treat for me, since we often were among the last to go on and hardly ever had a chance to see anyone else live.
