  1. i won't be able to make it, that weekend, but i am interested... do you have mello's that i can use?
  2. I can assure you that UC is in a safe neighborhood. Perception does not always= reality...
  3. That was by far the best meal of the year... Texas was good to us
  4. Cincinnati not natti. . . no big deal. . .we need a corps..
  5. My Fraternity brother who i talked into watching the show last night (he had seen a few shows from my DVD's previously) sent me a text message after the show.... "WOW!!! i was totally impressed by the cavaliers...better than 007!!! i will definetely be going to compitions with you next yr!!!" so basically..... 1 more fan from tonight's showing i got similar comments from some of my other friends
  6. kind of a weird one but i always get chills when i watch Boston 2002. When they make the american flag (i know it's cheezy, but it just send shivers up and down my spine )!
  7. I also just made it a mandatory brotherhood event for my fraternity... Everyone always asks me why the #### i was gone all last summer...now they will know!!! (being the VP has its perks)
  8. This is really sad. I do want to hear the director's side of the story... this does explain the stagnation of capital in recent years...without returning vets/staff...you don't move foreward...
  9. just sent out an invitation to about 200 people on my band email directory, then also sent out a event invitation on my college facebook account, another 200...
  10. By far my favorite quote EVER!!! "Drum Corps, For those who know, no explanation is needed, for those who don't know, no explanation is possible"
  11. Parking: with the state fair going on at the exact same time parking was a *****. But ohh well, that is probably the most negative thing you are going to hear from me in this review. The Stadium: Crew stadium has to be one of the best venues for drum corps ever. It is a soccer field and there were no previous lines on the field which alowed them to put the front sideline only about 15 feet from the first row of seats. This made for a very intense and yes, loud evening. My seats were right on the 50, upper deck. GREAT SEATS!! I was sitting next to 2 men. On my left was a family man that had never heard of, let alone, seen a drum corps show. They were from Cleveland and were in town for the fair, and then they decided to come see the show after hearing about it during the day. On my right was an older man that had been in and around the activity for many, many years. He marched BD and I forgot to ask him what year. But let’s just say he has been around for a while. I will give you their comments as well throughout the review. Pacific Crest: Great show!! I thought that this was a great start to a truly amazing night of drum corps. The opener is great with good drill and great music. I thought that their score should have been closer to mandarins. New guy: That was pretty good I didn’t know they were going to be so loud. Old guy: they sounded very mature for such a young group. Didn’t they just take a really large break in the middle of the summer? He liked that. Mandarins: this show grabbed you from the beginning. It really communicated to the audience and the brass sounded very good for not being a full line. That being said, I think that mandarins are doing great this year and I hope that they continue to grow and expand the program. New guy: They weren’t as loud as the first ones. Their uniforms are kind of cool though. Old guy: They blew me away! For such a small horn line they definitely made it all the way up here. Spirit: This corps made an opening statement that was probably one of the best received of the night. They really came out to play tonight. Saucedo did an excellent job arranging for them this year. The music speaks so well to the audience. The drill left a little to be desired but it is getting pretty clean, and that counts for a lot. New guy: It just keeps getting louder and louder. He was starting to get a little more excited. Old man: “That is a GREAT corps” he thought that they a kind of rough sound but that they gave the audience exactly what they wanted. Glassmen: I have to be honest; I have never really liked glassmen. I can never seem to get into their show. And I must say that tonight BLEW me away. They sounded GREAT. Their drill was looking very good. This show just gets better and better as it goes along. Leaps ahead of last years design (which I didn’t really care for). New Guy: This one felt like a play or an opera being performed right here. The lights are on now and it is like a stage being set for them. He also liked the warm-up where they do the “symphony thing”. Old guy: These guys just keep getting better every year. He explained that early on the 2000’s he didn’t really like their shows but that the past few years they have started to get better and better. Santa Clara: This was my choice for the night. I had not seen them yet this year but they are really starting to make a push. Their show is hard not to like, its loud, fast and getting clean. Probably my favorite or second favorite show of the night. In thought that the theme was clear and present. They really didn’t stop moving that much. When they would end in a block, the center four people would just keep rotating around. It was a really neat effect. New guy: They were awesome. I have never seen anything like that. Old guy: Great!! That was just good drum corps. Carolina Crown: This show is just so interesting to me. I can’t get enough of it. Half way through the show the new guy explains to me that this corps puts so much emotion out on the field that it is hard not to watch them. I agreed. They just pull you in! Their trumpets were stellar and I thought that they had a great, full sound. Their drill was great with lots of nice “clicks” where the music and drill fit together so eloquently. New guy: Liked their uniforms and their “emotion”. Old guy: “these shows are blowing me away!” This is when he said that this was the best year that DCI has had in a long, long time. He said that he had never seen such solid products one right after another. Blue Devils: FIREWORKS!!! The state fair which was going on about 200 yards away ended their night with fireworks as BD warmed up. Kind of neat. The new guy just said “quite an entrance!”. This show rocks as well. Their opening hit gives you so many goose bumps it’s not even fair. The drums really pulled me in. I hadn’t noticed too many of the drumlins tonight but they really just seemed to make it all the way up and pull me down on the field with them. The ballad is just exquisite and so subtle at times. It makes you just melt into your seat. This show could win in Madison this week and I would be happy, I really would. I have seen Phantom and I said the same thing about them. This year just keeps getting better and better. New guy: They were good…that’s it…what else needs to be said? I agreed. Old guy: This is the best BD show he has seen in the 2000’s. He thought that the drill was leaps ahead of last year and that the music was written perfectly. Capital Regiment: The home town Corps. The crowd definitely gave them the respect that they deserved. The new guy next to me had asked me if they were going to sound bad, since they had to follow such an amazing BD show. I wondered the same thing as well. You know what? They sounded Awesome!! I saw this show in Fairfield about a month ago. This show has grown so much that I can hardly believe it is the same show. The hits were some of the loudest of the night, I thought. This is the best product that this corps has put on the field in its short, short history. The drummer actually didn’t catch the Frisbee. He ended up doing about 5 push ups and then a fellow drummer told him to get up and get back in line. It was one of the funniest things that I have ever seen on the drum corps field. It was so well done in fact that I thought it was part of the show. Apparently (I was talking with some of the members after the show) the tenor player made everything up on the spot. They had never practiced what he should do if he drops it. So for all the people there last night THAT WAS IMPROV! Pretty amazing). Very proud of the hometown corps. New Guy: I was impressed they sounded just as loud as blue devils and seemed like they were having a lot of fun out there. Old guy: they really had fun out there, didn’t they? He said that they pulled him on to the field with them and that he had more fun, during their show that he had with any of the other corps. The encore: Ya know I have been positive this whole thread haven’t I? The new champion’s fanfare is HORRIBLE!!! It’s just stupid. It’s too long! Anyways, enough negativity, the encore, by capital regiment, was just down right fun. I moved down to about the third row, right on the 50. The drummers lead the corps out with a perfect cadence. They harkened back to the “Play” version of their show and just had a great time on the field. That seemed to be the theme of their whole encore. They played through most of their show, and blew everyone away!! The mellos were particularly stunning to hear up close. Then after their show, they played one last song. I don’t remember the name of it and I know that someone that was there will tell me. But that was just a FUN song. The horn line was arced up and the drumline gradually broke their form. Then on the last time through the melody, the horn line started to break out of the arc. They were really playing well and the crowd was into it. Just a really fun encore. :::::::: I want to take this time to point out how amazing this show was for me. I was at finals last year and this show blew it out of the water. This was one of the best drum corps shows I have seen. The shows were just so refreshing to hear ! But i have to be honest it wasn't just because of the shows it was also because I was sitting next to a man who had never seen a drum corps show let a lone even heard of drum corps, and then on the other side was a man who had been around the activity for 30-40 years. Just awesome. Good luck to ALL of the corps this week and I hope that we see some surprise endings. Can’t wait for the DVD’s this year. questions? comments? how's my driving??
  12. 2003...centerville...the first Div 1 corps i EVER saw was capital regiment (who i marched for in 2005....the show that got me hooked...PHANTOM...WHAT a freaking show...it wasn't unitl the encore that i knew that drum corps was for me...what a freaking show...literally changed my life
