  1. I don't think the point has ever been to simply show it off as a difficult move. People are way over thinking this. It's simply a signature move; a nod to the past-- one that a lot of us think looks pretty cool. I think too many people get hung up on the idea that every move, every phrase has to be difficult. Sometimes, it's the simple things in life that are the best.
  2. Cool story, though it makes me feel old... :) My oldest child is 5 now. Haven't been able to take her to a show yet, though I wonder if we may indeed have another musician in the family. I found her standing on the couch the other day, two-hand conducting the soundtrack to Superman Returns. I asked her where she learned it--got the usual "I dunno." (We haven't watched any drum corps in a while, so I'm thinking she must have been watching the behind-the-scenes features of one of her animated movies...)
  3. Ah man, that sucks. I had no idea they were there--I drive by that stadium 2 or 3 times a week. Ugh. I need to pay better attention next time.
  4. We had a bit of a scare in 92--one of our snares came down with what was described as "non-specific" hepatitis. Which, translated, means they had no idea what virus caused it. Just that the person had a fever, swollen liver and all the fun that can involve. (I'll spare the bathroom details...) We went into lock-down mode: new cups for every trip to the drink spigots, wash your hands 28.5 times a day, and so on... Very grim for a few days but things relaxed a bit when no one else seemed to develop symptoms.
  5. Again, too bad they separated you like that (and drove off!) because it didn't really help. It has around a 2 week incubation period (many common viruses do)--by the time you show symptoms, you've already done all the spreading. The puss pockets [never thought I'd that on the forum!] are evidence that your body is finally turning back the viral horde. By the time you were laid up in the room of no return, you weren't very likely to spread it any more. (You, or others, had already done that...)
  6. They better not screw up, though. Might rip out his seat and throw it on the field. :P
  7. They segregated the poor guy? Bummer. And probably unnecessary--you typically spread the love, so to speak, before your body has a nasty outward reaction to a viral infection. (Drove me crazy that our daycare would send kids home, no matter what, with a flu-induced fever--even a very mild one-- "to prevent spreading." Too late. They did their spreading about a week prior...)
  8. *serious mode on* On the whole, it's not a bad idea (at least, the sentiment isn't) but I can't help but think it might have a surpressing effect on the forums. I'll admit, I've never been a slave to "the topic"-- I like it, sometimes, when threads take a left turn, so long as it doesn't go too far (nebulous distinction, I know...) Couldn't this also open the door for some of the more serious-minded mod's to squash light-hearted threads by simply tagging them with a single star? (And thus bring on the stricter monitoring) Granted, that might not always be a bad thing--some threads simply don't need the jokes and whatnot. But I'd hate to kill this entirely. *serious mode off* Are there going to be box criteria?
  9. One minor suggestion - rename to Gold Bond ratings.
  10. That must have been a fluke- it's usually pretty humid here in north central Texas. (63% today, near Denton)
  11. Hell, I live in the state and still think it's too far of a drive. (Wish I had one of those new Honda jets)
  12. 1. Glow-in-the-dark uniforms/equipment-- have to kill the house lights, though. (variation--use black lights) 2. Company Back, via the moonwalk.
  13. I'm guessing that's the same high pressure dome that forcasters predicted to move into Texas next week or so and bring the usual (and absent thus far) summer heat wave/ dry spell. Grrr. ^0^
  14. Mine hasn't fit since G bugles and retreat were all the rage. :P
  15. Nice post, thanks for the info. Isn't there legislation languishing to re-write some of the DMCA and relax some of the restrictions? I also remember seeing something about a group of movie studios who recently came to a tentative agreement that might lead the way to authorized DVD ripping in mainstream programs like iTunes, etc. (I'll have to hunt for it) If so, maybe they can provide some influence to tweek the laws. (I feel so dirty loading them on my iPod ) BTW-- funny sig
  16. I miss watching retreat and I liked it, for the most part, when I marched. However, I did like the occasional DM only retreat as well--more time for snacks and chilling out. And I concur--the mosquitoes really sucked. So did having to take a leak, really badly, and realizing you had to wait through half a dozen more corps.
  17. If $90 gets you the webcasts for the entire summer, isn't that pretty similar to paying extra for a league pass on sat TV?
  18. From what I understand, it's not a copyright violation for you to make a personal recording from a public parking lot, so long as you don't distribute or show it publicly. (Which would include uploading to the net.) However, many people (especially since 9-11) run into problems when photographing prominent sites such as ball parks, bridges, etc. I've read of people being accosted by security types for taking pictures of a ball park from a public sidewalk, because the team has registered the building as a trademark. Despite what they may claim, so long as you’re in a public spot, and not breaking any other laws, you can snap away. (You just can print it in a poster.)
  19. I certainly wouldn't argue that stealing isn't wrong but when you're dealing with issues regarding different media platforms (on emerging technologies), it's not always clear as to what the definition of "stealing" is. For instance, an ABC exec once said that anyone fastforwarding through the commercials of a show they recorded on a DVR was "stealing" from the network. Most would disagree. (I only slow down to catch movie trailers :) )
  20. From just the little bit I've looked into it, US Copyright law seems anything but "black and white," with quite of bit of legislation out there, some of it being quite contradictory. There are circumstances where you can legally make copies of a copyrighted work--it's all dependent on the circumstances and, often times, the legal issues can be pretty murky. Case in point-- you can legally import a CD you own into iTunes. DVD's? Not so much. (As Bart mentioned, there's another law concerning the defeat of anti-copy software, which most DVD's have.) In regards to failure to enforce, it may not be as immaterial as you're suggesting. I've read of instances where this exact argument has been made, such as when Blockbuster was sued by Netflix for patent infringement of their business model. Blockbuster argued that the length of time with no notice from Netflix amounted to tacit authorization. (I never kept up with this story, so I don't know how it worked out for them. Blockbuster commercials now emphasize that you can also return movies to their store, so it seems like their trying to stress that they're using a different model altogether.)
  21. I would hope that neither you nor anyone else would base their decision on where to march, or opinion of a particular corps, on comments made by some nameless yahoo ranting on the pages of this forum. They don't represent the corps and many Regiment alumni, myself included, have said that their "help" is neither wanted or needed. Keep being a Phan and always remember to take anything you read here (particularly from anonymous ranters) with a giant grain of salt. (Or, in some cases, just don't pay attention at all! :) )
  22. I live in Yep, they just faded away. (Typical summer pattern for this time of year.) What's more, the wind seems pretty mild too, though it might be another thing at the stadium.
  23. I went to the wfaa (channel 8, Dallas) website, clicked on the weather section and brought up the desktop weather for DFW county. I then pasted the link to the gif into my DCP sig. Denton lucked out on the weather it seems. Some pretty mild stuff passed through earlier and blossomed into some pretty significant rain. Likewise, the cell taht was coming in from the northeast fizzled out before it got here. As of right now I'm sitting here with my fingers crossed, hoping my wife can finish up her homework (she's working on her Masters of Ed. degree) so I can head out the door and catch some of the show. We'll see...
