gcsbaribc replied to andyjgcs's topic in DCA - All-Age Corps Discussions
ROCK ON ANDY!!! If it wasn't for the extreme distance I would be there!! Gulf Coast Sound is a great organization that takes competition and having fun very seriously. So far GCS has been the best field performance experience of my life, and I do intend on getting that GCS uni back on!!!! Keep it kickin' Gulf Coast Sound!! -
2009 Texas Drum Corps Preview
gcsbaribc replied to AustinStarsPAA's topic in DCA - All-Age Corps Discussions
This event sounds even better than the last time I performed/attended it. I am dragging my family to the preview this year, which will be the first DC event of my kids lives as a spectator*!!! (2 yrs and 10 mo.s) (* my daughter was along for the ride in 2006 performing as a fetus,.. no kidding). -
Man, especially if you are from the 80s of drum corps this is really tasty stuff. This is the right time for a Lenny show from the corps formerly known as Garfield. Can't wait to see it on the field. Give us some great manooovahs!

AUSTIN STARS Back for 2009!
gcsbaribc replied to AustinStarsPAA's topic in DCA - All-Age Corps Discussions
It is great what is going on in Texas. It will be awesome when there is a true Texas circuit, and it seems to be happening sooner than later. I did really enjoy that Florida DCS show though (2005), it was a long trip ~19 hours, but well worth the effort. Go Austin! Can't wait to see what great things happen to you in 2009! -
ya gotta love parades. ya just gotta- lol. (be sure to throw in some inebriated parade attendees). (sorry this is off-topic): My favorite parades/routes are the Galveston seawall parade "all star drum corps parade", and the Racine, WI 4th of July parade. Each is a totally different animal, but equally fun. I have many friends that SWEAR by the 2 valve DEG for parade usage, for what its worth (very light and effort-free horn). Yes, I am in the market for one. Have fun today in Hamburg, I am jealous. I bet the weather is perfect!

I forgot to add that I do own a b-flat, 0.570 bore Bach marching baritone. I have never tried marching this horn, but I love this thing. It was an ebay purchase from some music store in Marietta, GA. It's a little heavy compared to a DEG bugle bari, but it has a very nice, smooth DARK sound. You would really have to blow on this horn to project it properly, but a whole line of these horns would be something to behold.

New 'Force' On The Horizon
gcsbaribc replied to DCP NewsFeed's topic in DCA - All-Age Corps Discussions
Texas is fertile ground for drum corps (any). I (and my Texas drum corps friends) will be watching this effort very carefully. This is the right place for another corps and the right name. DCA doesn't have any police type icons in their ranks, unlike the famous DCI corps from Canton. (Someone please correct me if I am wrong) Would "the force" represent the polar opposite of the gang of seven in San Fran? Drum corps growth = good -
Hey Shadow! I had to chime in on this- The G baritone 3 valve is actually a great horn. Some minor issues with intonation, but a vet can wail on this thing. Pair it up with a LOUD mouthpiece and you have a weapon out there on the field. The G Kanstul 3 valve just feels like a much more solid horn, and seems to just have more craftmanship in it. I wouldn't be surprised if it can stand a lot more wear and tear than its brethren. I have heard some great things about the B flat Dynasty, but never tried it out. I have taken a whack at the 2 valve Dynasty G bari, and from what I can remember it was awesome (it was just a long, long time ago).

'zactly. once a bone player, always a bone player. although I prefer a G-bugle any day, any way, any how (even an old DEG). When I tried out for a div. 1 corps back in the olden dinosaur days, I brought my t-bone as they asked me to. I never had to touch it though, as I was given a 2 valve right off the bat. =)

To Our Drum Corps Brethren On The Gulf Coast
gcsbaribc replied to MiniSopGuy's topic in DCA - All-Age Corps Discussions
Been checking the GCS website and forum frequently. Have not heard from everyone by ANY means. Sound like they still have no power in most of the city. What a nightmare. Rita pretty much convinced me and my family to get out of there as soon as we could. This just reinforces the fact that GCS (the membership) is tougher than nails. First off, just practicing and performing in the Houston climate and then having to deal with these terrible disasters. GCS, Please check in as soon as possible to let us outside of Houston know you are all ok. DCP, Keep our membership and the rest of Galveston and Houston in your thoughts. Thanks, Darrin -
When is "drum corps" not drum corps any more?
gcsbaribc replied to WWonka's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
Amplification = Wrong. this covers soloists, small ensembles, mic'd voice and the whole thing. -
If celebrities marched corps...
gcsbaribc replied to davidsampson's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
Absolutely. Good One. Eliza Dushku would have fit in the late 80's Cadets. Lisa Loeb = Bluecoats Geddy Lee = Les Etoiles then Star circa 1990 And no, Letterman could never march Star. -
Housing at Brass on the Bayou
gcsbaribc replied to Pit_Girl_77's topic in DCA - All-Age Corps Discussions
Isn't that the only way to have REAL drum corps? That Houston humidity and heat seems to help the sound carry somehow. Best of luck on Brass on the Bayou 3! Lets get another win for the "HOME TEAM"!! -
DCA Championship 2008 Class A
gcsbaribc replied to TomPeashey's topic in DCA - All-Age Corps Discussions
Well done, DCA. This is a big positve step in the right direction. -
"Old" is a vague term to many of us on DCP. So, I am not sure exactly what you were listening to. (FYI I would consider old to equal pre 1961). I was just listening to late 70's early 80's BD myself just the other day and thinking, why isn't anyone doing this kind of stuff anymore? Guess you may have to look up some "modern" DCA shows. I might suggest the evil 7 gang in San Fran.

Wow, thats great news Chris!! Rock On!!

Don't think I have ever experienced embarrassment from a solo. Whatever you play, then thats the music, ya know. With specific regard to what happened in '89, dude in my skewed reality I really dug the result. Can someone really say a solo is bad or good? It is what it is. Ok, here is another example. Listen to Dizzy G. play in his style, just about anything. At times a purist can argue about tone quality and breath support, or whatever, but dude.. its Dizzy. Thats just his style. Now if it was a soli, then thats totally different. You have to play matched or its just plain wrong. I have experienced embarrassment on the field over this issue.

Best of wishes, Frontier on your first rehearsal of this season. It looks like all the Texas corps are stepping it up a notch in 2008!

It looks like BC is a "no go" for the HEB Thanksgiving Parade in downtown H-town. Just a logistical nightmare. Not a big fan of parades, but that is a real nice one in that you can scream off a few "medium high notes" down the canyons of buildings and hear the echoes in some places. The TV coverage is pretty sweet too. You guys have almost successfully highjacked a thread on DCP, way to go. Thomas, I am making a kid from Sugarland a priority in getting him on the bassline for 2008. Oh I am also looking for 5 more baris, so I can play in the euph line. So keep your ears open for some more of that Louisiana talent. Yes, LSU is my fav. SEC team (this is arranged from marriage). Go Tigers and beat the tide tomorrow. -
Gulf Coast Sound - Open House !
gcsbaribc replied to MarkT-GCS's topic in DCA - All-Age Corps Discussions
Best of luck to DCK as well, you guys sounded GREAT last year at Nashville! -
Been flirtin with disaster, Yall know what I mean. And the way we run our lives, It makes no sense to me. I dont know about yourself or, What you want to be - yeah. When we gamble with our time, We choose our destiny. Now this is a drum corps anthem if there ever was one. Can't believe it hasn't been done before. Haven't seen the charts yet, but given the quality of last year it should be rockin' to say the least. Should be some meaty brass stuff too... YUM. Rock ON!!
