  1. Would you say that cymbals are becoming guard equipment more in DCA or DCI? Or both? Who had cymbal lines that you don't consider guard equipment?
  2. I'm not saying I agree or disagree with you, but having taught many a cymbal line, I wouldn't judge how much a cymbal line plays/doesn't play based off of one clip.
  3. Where are you getting your rumors from?
  4. Did I miss something while scanning the recaps? Did this happen?
  5. Hmmmmm......I'm not quite sure how to respond to this. I can understand if cymbal lines aren't your cup of tea, but to be glad they are going away is a little harsh. I think one of the reasons people don't like cymbal lines is they haven't seen enough good ones. Some are a visual distraction to what's going on. But the good ones ADD to the visual presentation of a show. I've sat in GE Visual meetings where the judge has talked about how much the cymbal line has added to the show. The amount of body movement you can do with them is nothing but a plus to the field vis judge as well. As far as impacts on the field, when you have 72 horns, drums and pit members hitting an impact, it's easy to lose 5 hand cymbal players, esp if they are not staged well. But where cymbal lines can more is the softer sections. Playing melodic lines with the brass, creating counter point with other battery parts, even stepping out on there own to present a musical thought. There isn't another instrument out there that can produces as many colors as a pair of cymbals.
  6. Check out WGI percussion 2005. Aftermath in PIO did an entire show about the golden mean. Drill, music, etc.
  7. Is it me, or would a show about the Declaration of Independence be a perfect show FOR voice in a show?
  8. Hmmm.....What about people that just want to be cymbal players? They are out there you know.
  9. Cool. I was the cymbal tech for a number of years with Reading. Good luck. I always want to see more cymbal lines out there, as long as they are quality. I had a 7 person line when I taught Bluecoats in 2000. I like 8 or 6, parts and visuals seem to split easier. I understand your whole 7 thing though. Hope to see it happen.
  10. Hmmmm.......OK, I'll bite........why would you want to do that?
  11. I'm not sure if Star ever had a cymbal line or not. Kinda weird since Thom was the father of modern cymbal playing. Not sure why they didn't. As far as auditioning, try and get familiar with the technique of the corps you're trying out for. When I was teaching Div-1, timing was a big key for me when I was trying out new players. Part of that might be the way I wrote was very note heavy. Some other lines are looking for endurance and strength. If you can't hold up the lids, chances are you're going to be in trouble. Let me know where you are trying out, I'll give you any pointers I can.
  12. I've written cymbal parts to shows that don't have cymbal lines i.e Phantom '89.......is that a clue?
  13. PR-'89 The show that got me into this whole #### thing.
  14. There goes my dream of being a corps director..............
  15. HAHA, I miss the farmers market. That's where I got all my albums, cheap. I am pretty sure they were all stolen as well.
  16. Is that the night they shut down the judge's meeting after the show? I think some folks were fighting about being 7th instead of 6th or something like that. But it is a faded memory.....
  17. Silly me, trying to ask a simple question. Slightly touchy are we?
