Class A corps with the Most Drill?
csugrad replied to Supersop08's topic in DCA - All-Age Corps Discussions
Alliance had 100 pages with several that had subsets between them which could have easily been over 110 pages. -
Alliance soloists Cameron Brown - Trumpet Ben Smart - Mellophone

Depending on the quality of the tone being produced they may be playing on a Mpc that is too large which adds to the ability to play flat. Could be a weak embouchure or simply NOT filling the horn up completely with air.

Andy Poor - Activist Judge...
csugrad replied to goldingna's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
I think it has been discussed in recent years that perfect scores do NOT mean a corps is perfect in that category. My best recollection of this account was in regards to either BD or Cavies in the last few years. There was a perfect score given out when we as spectators could pick out flaws. It was defended as so the corps was better than all the previous corps and the only other number to give them was the next available number higher than corps b. Yet because of that it does not mean corps A was perfect. Did I confuse anyone? All I can take of this is that if we want the highest caption score to equal perfection then the numbers must ALL be brought way down within the scale of judging. -

If you have connections to someone with the corps and they did perform you might get a score from them. I have an unofficial score for Spirit that I'll wait and see if it gets posted by DCI. It came from a member on the bus. Sheets were given to staff and there are numbers be them official or not. -

Lets hope more than half the corps got to perform so the numbers will be given out. Apologies to those who might not get to perform. -

I was going to say the same thing. Spirit's hornline is going in reverse according to the numbers. I hope it is just because they have made some changes and are getting familiar with them again. Not good to be back in the mid 7's this close to finals.

Thanks for following up. I never said Wayne invented it. I said he developed it. He took the system and made it what it is today. Good bad or indifferent it is what it is right now and some people swear by it. I still have mixed thoughts about it now that I have more insight to it.

The "notching" system of tuning brass instruments was developed by Wayne Downey. It is definitely a different way of tuning than how we are taught in our public education classes (band). I knew nothing about it until I taught brass with a former BD member and was introduced to the system. Every set of instruments are notched DIFFERENTLY. Trumpets do not have the same increments of notching as the mellos or baritones/euphs or tubas. This is all done based on pure pitch tuning in a controlled temperature room of about 71-73 degrees. You make he first notch based on A440 for each sample instrument. Then you take the formula that Wayne has developed and notch the slides in MM increments. SO, when you are playing outside the temp and humidity numbers will determine the approx. notch to place the slide. This is based on the chart you create every day from changing temps. around you. For BD they all use the same mouthpiece on matched horns. Therefore you can tell the trumpets to go to notch "3". This does NOT mean everyone is automatically in tune at that notch but this is the closest proximity to what in tune means for the instrument. Minor adjustments are then made by individuals on either side of the original notch setting. Notches are NOT equal on all instrument families. Wow, did I manage to confuse everyone here? LOL It is very scientific in its workings. Good luck!

I'll add my story from 1989. Finals week Spirit (of Atlanta) does NOT make finals for the first time in the history of the corps and what do we see when retreat sets up for finals: Suncoast sound does a super nice tribute to us by laying out their horns in a super large Delta showing their tribute to us. That was the greatest thing ever at the time. There are photos floating around of the tribute to us. On a side note... we also made sure we would be "IN" finals that night by the sort of DELTA in the back stands during the shows. That might very well be the reason why they stopped letting members sit in the back stands to watch shows after they have performed.

Violation of amp of horns/drums in Cadets
csugrad replied to GmenBari78's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
I missed somewhere when DCI ok'ed the ability to MIX the amplification throught the show. I even saw the Cadets guy mixing during the show while talking on a 2 way radio. I was not going to even bring it up but since this thread is here I'll put it out for discussion. I thought that once levels were set that the box was not to be touched until the show was over. I guess that is no longer the case if marching members ON the field are doing narration on the move. -

I tried to get my middle school in Stone Mtn to host a corps but the gym floor was just redone and my principal said no because of that and our cafeteria is where everything is stored during the summer from the classrooms as they are being cleaned. :(

So we already know the same judging panel from last night is working again tonight. Do we know if they are staying in the SAME captions for both nights or have they been moved around?

... and yet Troopers took 2nd in ensemble music tonight over Spirit!
