  1. It depends who Ms Zorn's boss is. If she reports to the DCI CEO or the board, then there could be a conflict of interest. If she reports to SafeSport, that is less of a conflict of interest. I'm not sure we've been given enough information at this point to know.
  2. That is a good question as well. The harassing-member of today may well become the harassing-instructor of tomorrow. We need to break the cycle.
  3. It seems to me that it would be useful if Ms Zorn (the new DCI Participant Safety Manager) would have some sort of discussion on DCP with those of us who have specific questions and/or concerns. We could ask questions like: 'If a still-active DCI HOF caption-head instructor is found to be acting inappropriately, do you have the authority to remove the instructor, even if the Corps protests?' (note - I do not have any individual in mind, I am just trying to indicate the 'offender' is someone high-up in a Corps) 'If a marching member who is the star soloist for a Corps in contention for winning a championship misbehaves the morning of finals day, do you have the authority to pull him from the finals night performance?' 'If leadership of a Corps refuses to cooperate with an investigation by your office, do you have the authority to remove the Corps from the tour?' I'm sure we could come up with other questions. The point is that unless DCI empowers Ms Zorn by backing her up when making disciplinary decisions, then it is just more smoke, mirrors, & obfuscation on DCI's part.
  4. $6 cheese covered cardboard beats anything with pineapple (no matter what the cost).
  5. I wonder if we are trying to reinvent the wheel? Does anyone know USA Gymnastics (idk if that is the exact term) set up (if anything) to prevent another Larry Nasser? What about NCAA schools & Title 9 stuff? Of course, both have a lot more $ than Drum Corps. I think with enough time & money something could be developed. We used to say that the ideal process is high-quality, fast, & inexpensive. The problem is that you can only have two - if it is fast & inexpensive it won’t be high quality. If it is inexpensive & high quality it won’t be fast. And fast & high quality won’t be inexpensive.
  6. People are on the police list because they have been convicted & put on the list. The issue facing Drum Corps is how to handle individuals who have exhibited bad behavior but haven’t been convicted in a court of law. What happens if someone is ‘on the list’ but believes that the should not be on the list?
  7. It was easy for DCI to discipline Pioneer because Pioneer didn’t fit into the current DCI brand. Look how DCI didn’t wavered all over the place w/SoA
  8. You, the IT guy, are asking me, a dumb biologist, an IT question? 😎 IDK how to help. It works on my Apple notebook.
  9. Link to this spreadsheet is from the Reddit discussion. Has openings broken down by Corps. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/19vPuwuvdsZbZKURtC44aP5b6cXg0MapKNI4PcuGEd5o/edit#gid=0
  10. Yes, I know guards tend to fill after WGI. But I am a bit surprised about number of brass, as well as battery percussion. I was under impression that battery was the section that historically had the most individuals trying out for limited spots.
  11. Based on DCI 'Fill Every Corps' chart on Reddit, it seems that there are many positions (428 Brass, 219 Percussion, 355 Guard, 10 Conductors, & 60 other positions) open. So, my probably not popular prediction is that we will see a number of Corps not at the 165-member level. The top Corps will likely be full, but some further down the line won't be won't be. And a related question is whether some Corps will accept less-talented members just to 'fill a hole' & perhaps live with lower execution scores. Or do you re-design the show for the number of performers you have at the desired talent level? The irony is that DCI is celebrating its 50th anniversary, and those of us that remember the 70s-80s remember 'Corps X' is small this year. I suspect we'll be saying this come June. Reddit link is below. The Reddit commenters seem to think cost is a major barrier. https://www.reddit.com/r/drumcorps/comments/u36m96/stop_for_those_of_you_about_to_ask_should_i_march/
  12. If a Corps would do a Sousa show copyright wouldn't be an issue. (Note as a low-brass guy I am contractually obligated to enjoy playing JPS marches(
  13. Amazing thing about Great Gig is that the vocals were improvised by Clare Torry in 2 takes. When they played it in concerts they usually had 3 vocalists swapping out the parts.
  14. This is true - everyone on DCP is one swing away from being an axe murderer. But that doesn’t prevent us from owning an axe
  15. The Wall by Pink Floyd perhaps? As the Floyd is (and will forever remain) the GOAT, not sure if it would translate well to Drum Corps. I know various parts of Dark Side of the Moon have been used (inc by Bluecoats), but I don’t think it really worked. But I don’t understand the technical side well enough to say why it didn’t work.
  16. Agree talent level for strongest players in any given Corps BITD & today is same; I think a major difference is the talent level of the weakest players today far exceeds the weakest players in a Corps from 40-50 years ago.
  17. "When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean—neither more nor less." "The question is," said Alice, "whether you can make words mean so many different things." "The question is," said Humpty Dumpty, "which is to be master—that's all." Lewis Carroll - Through the Looking Glass
  18. I'll try again: Perhaps the show is called 'Black Hole'. The entire field is covered with a black tarp, and the only performers are 6 synth players in the pit, dressed entirely in black, playing dissonant chords.
