  1. 27 rarely came out of gate fast. But in 77 they were even less fast
  2. I don't think anyone in the DCI era that would beat 27 in 1977. Back in the VFW / AL era it might have happened
  3. I am specifically referring to what has been deemed 'thunderous goo'.
  4. Back when I marched we would have considered it an insult to suggest that we needed a synth/amp to back us up.
  5. So far as using the internet & social media (as it was back then), the initial bar was set by the San Fransisco Renegades in the late 1990s - early 2000's. There wasn't a day gone by on RAMD without a Renegades post. & even if you didn't care for the posts, at least you were curious to see what the fuss was all about & if they lived up to the (considerable) hype (spioilder alert - they did)
  6. Can't have too many brass power chords with chromatic runs by the pit
  7. I have predicted, & still maintain, that at some point a Corps will 'field' an entire horn line of 3 trumpets, 2 mellos, 2 baris, 1 euph and 1 tuba, all in pit & amped. And a guard of about 120 on the field. Will it score well, who knows. But it will happen sooner or later.
  8. I saw an interview somewhere of the models & photographer. Was shot in Italy methinks. Was real hard for the "girlfriend" to keep a straight face.
  9. IDK why they need so many marimbas (for example) - if it is cranked through an amplifier whey do you need more than one player per part? Are there really 4-6 different marimba parts?
  10. In 1974 defending champ SCV elected not to go on last, allowing Madison (who won prelims) to go on last (no one wanted to go on after Madison). Strategy worked.
  11. Some Corps will place higher than they did in 2019. Some Corps will place lower than they did in 2019. Some Corps will place the same as they did in 2019. and unfortunately, some Corps from 2019 will not field in 2021.
  12. I remember playing Corps on a time or two. We had a song that was in a kind of weird meter that we would use. Was fun to watch some of the other Corps members try to keep in step. I know today some members don't like retreats, but you can make them fun if you want.
  13. Agree 100%. When you look at the big picture, getting the DCI tour up & running is about priority # 9475.
  14. The full retreat used to be something the Fans looked forward to. As members, we had fun as well. I remember a show where we filed onto the field at retreat using triple interval so our 50-member file would be longer than Phantom; & everyone would be waiting for us to get set before scores were announced. One must have their small victories. DCI has posted the award ceremony for most years on Youtube (note DCI is the copyright holder & they are the ones posting, so there should be no 'illegal video issues)
  15. ".....and in second place, which is a tie for first place....." Was there a championship tie-breaker back then (I know there had been ties lower in the standings)? At 1982 DCM finals Phantom & Madison tied. Just after 3rd place was announced at retreat the both marched off the field. Announcer said 'There has been a tie for first, & we WILL have a champion'. So other Corps cleared out; Madison & Phantom performed again. Phantom won with an 85.4 to Madison's 85.0.
  16. I believe the 'post-prelims member callout' happened to the Muchachos in 1975.
  17. 96 BD & Phantom, 99 SCV & BD, 2000 Cadets & Cavaliers In 99/00 there were 4 different champions in 2 seasons
  18. "Stockholm Syndrome" Plot - Heavy metal fan who hates Abba has to go to Stockholm for an extended period. Of course, in Stockholm the only music played is Abba. After a tortured dream sequence (Abba in a minor key), he (or she) awakes and embraces his (her) love for all things Abba.
  19. I saw Phantom in Alton IL; they tied w/ Cavaliers with a 84.5. For a victory concert they played a shortened version of Spartacus - & I was thinking, 'this brass section is really good'
  20. I was hoping Tricia Nadolny would be selected. Perhaps next year. Because of her reporting I suspect at least some assaults that would have happened did not happen.
  21. Sandusky & Cosby & Hoppy - Oh MY!! Sandusky & Cosby & Hoppy - Oh MY!!
  22. Underreporting always happens (unless the disease is 100% fatal (like rabies, although there have been a very few survivors in recent years)) - some people slip through the cracks in the system. Plus, there are individuals with sub-clinical infections (and there is growing evidence that there are beaucoup sub-clinical covid infections). Johnny Cash as DM - hmm. I was thinking more of a 6-foot 4-inch bald, heavily tattooed convicted murderer who was also his cell-mate. Bill Cosby & Jerry Sandusky could make an appearance as well...
  23. OK - you asked for it (college professor hat on) 😎 The disease is behaving in a classic density - dependent manner as a limiter of population growth. The more closely packed the population is, the greater the impact. Although originally designed to 'flatten the curve', social distancing - by definition unpacks population density. And 'flattening the curve' has been somewhat mischaracterized from the get-go. The number of cases (the area under the curve for all you calculus fans) remains the same, it is just spread out more over time, thus lowering the chance that the hospital system will get overwhelmed. OK - back on topic - How about designing a show called "COMMONWEALTH vs GEORGE HOPKINS"? Featuring the musical selections: Jailhouse Rock, Folsom Prison Blues, Behind Blue Eyes. I envision guard-tower props on each corner of the field... Thoughts?
