  1. You could make the same argument for Garfield in 1984 (their 50th anniversary)...but I won't...and please note WHERE I marched that year... I have been told on numerous occasions since coming to this bvoard that in any other year, I would've won. I was told years ago by a MEMBER of the 84 Cadets that they thought they lost the show...that prelims was far better than finals for them. I was told recently by a MEMBER of the 84 Cadets that it COULD have been a gift... I've been bithing and moaning (in total jest) about Dave Fowler (84Cadet on DCP, Sam's Ring on the BD board) having my ring...he came out to LA to see relatives this past Xmas and we met for the first time since that train ride in '86...and he brought the ring with him (my precious, my precious)...but you know what? I never EVER said we got robbed or that it was politics...I loist my one chance for the ring to one of the greatest shows of all time...I got beat by the best. Of the 84 BD people I've talked to here and onthe Bd board (bd5times, bangerb, dugada, etc) NONE of them has ever said Garfield won because of 50th year politics...and I truly enjoy the Garfield show. If I can get over it...why can't you???
  2. I could always see the first girl...is was a 2nd I was wondering about.
  3. That'sm how I heard it...Gail found out about it and during a rehersal break confronted the 2 guys...they were gone that day. Thsi si not a case of a corps knowingly marching overage members...it's a case of deliberate falsification of official docs that not only fooled people who trusted the members to provide accurate and truthful info (SCV), but also US Immigration...amd possibly British authorities as well (since that's where the guys came from) Argue all you want about SCV vs PR in 89...but the overage guys were not a factor....it could even be argued that the resulting holes in SCV's drill was an additional handicap. For my money...should'a been Regiment, tho
  4. My DEG...bought it from the Black Knights drum line (who oroginally got it -- along with the rest of the choir -- from Nightfire after Rocketman and I folded the corps) My King K-20: ebay
  5. Jeff Person just confirmed there was a 2nd lady. Thanks, Jeff!
  6. Well, you know, Ryan's getting up there in years...I mean, forgetting such a thing fromyour own age-out year...sheesh! :P :P
  7. I don't remember seeing 87 SCV live (sucks to be me), but I've always wondered if there was a 2nd guard person in the magic trick during "Great Gate at Kiev." It certainly LOOKS like it...you can see the 2 guys pulling the tarp down again after the girl comes out, but the camera never showed it (and this was a year where there WERE a few minor shot changes from the original video to the DVD). If so...those 2 girls must've been pretty cramped before the trick...I hope they were good friends!!
  8. Who he was (88 a member of the guard...89 a bari or euph player) How...I know how (you can figure it out if you look at the vid carefully), but I'll leave it up to any SCV alum if I should say it or not...
  9. Well, that could be my dad or my little brother, but they don't march....
  10. Kansas City Symphony, as I recall... And I agree with the 88 vs 89 choice (heck, even my wife does, and she's not a corps fan!) Re Regiment...the perc score did hurt...but it IS possible to win if the other captions are either overwhelming or close enough to make it a crap shoot. 84...BD/Garfield...Perc BD, GE Garf (same differance in relative score9/10th either way...a wash...but while BD won drums, Garfield was in 7th place in percussion). Brass: 3 way tie (BD/SCV/Garf...we're still tied here). M&M...tie (SCV/Garf...BD 1/10th back, and that's where BD lost it) The point? SC and PR were really close all the way around...except in drums...
  11. It was close several times (84, 87, 93...Gahfield on top each time, interestingly enough) There WAS a tie for a nat title in 86...DC United Kingdom. Don't remember the score (would have to find my records), but it was Dagenham Crusaders and Conquest Alliance...with Dag taking brass AND percussion (so I won 2 different captions in 2 different corps orgs)
  12. Perhaps a small square of gaffer's tape on top of the button for traction? Nothing too think, as it may interfere with your feel for the valves.
  13. Sounds like Star! BTW...what ever happened to the horns??
  14. I believe they had 12 K-90s normally, but for the "Close Encounters" section(which I believe you're referring to), 6 baris (or was it euphs?) put down their normal horns and picked up additional K-90s.
  15. Why you tryin' to keep up with Santa Clara??? (Oldsters will get that one...)
  16. Uhhh...no thanks...I'd rather not have to replace all the windows and mirrors in the house.... ^0^
  17. Rich; Y'know...I'm a brass guy...and my rookie year was 4 year after you aged out...but your post mad me smile! Keep on 'boring' me, bro! Passion counts for a lot...even 2 decades plus later!
  18. HI, TRISH!!! I agree...what a way to age out!!
  19. Sue; It may have the feel of urban legend...except that Jeff Pearson was in SCVs bari line that year. Also consider this...the margin of victory was 1.7...a figure we all know to be gigantic at the top levels. This was also under the old timing gun...it had gone off, so no matter how good or bad the music was it wouldn;t effect the score. They were going for pure GE...and they couldn't've GOTTON more GE if they tried! The phasing was immaterial to the crowd reaction. Had the phasing not happened, BD still would've won and the scores would still be the same...
  20. Jeff Pearson told me about that in 03...he also said that Zap lost the beat...which made my jaw crash...Zap -- one of the most legendary DMs in the activity -- lost the beat??? Still...it's fun to listen to...phasing and all!
  21. I'd go 1980 BD wins 27th in 2nd (highest placement in DCI) Bridgemen in 3rd (Highest placement in DCI), and 1st year for their drum 3-peat Spirit in 4th (highest placement in DCI)...notable not only for the show itself (Let it be Me....yummmmmy!), but for the tragic loss of Jim Ott on tour. Watch for the ENTIRE staff surrounding the drum major podium to share in the show at the push...and some incredible body language as the entire corps tries to let Jim hear them. Post 82...I;d go 84, 85, or 86...classic years
