DCI high percussion through the years?
dundermifflin replied to wildcatdrummer's topic in Percussion Planet
I do know that SCV won the drum caption in '88 for sure. How the judges determined it that year, I don't know. You're probably right Hulka. -
Roland Chavez resigns from Crossmen
dundermifflin replied to mimatt80's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
I think Mike Jackson would be a great fit at Crossmen. He seems to always have choice beats flowing for Mission Viejo and since SCV got tired of waiting for him to perform miracles for them, he's probably available. -
Scott Johnson doesn't write the book for BD. Sure, he may throw some greatness in there at times but he isn't the percussion arranger for BD. I believe Dave Glyde is and has been for quite some time. As for the comparison between the two, I enjoy both styles equally because you know what to expect from each line and they both are usually smokin'. As for the overall 'sound', I prefer PR's tuning. Nicer balance between the voices. However, I think SCV has the best sounding drumline around. Great tuning and technique.

Pearson Out at Santa Clara Vanguard

I think Jared_mello was saying that the MUSIC was cheesy and didn't fit with Weber's drill, which is NOT cheesy. At least that's how I read it. -
I think it's safe to say now...
dundermifflin replied to UNTdrummer11's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
Yeah, I don't get why SCV is getting slammed in the drum scores either. They're playing the snot out of a great book and marching some ridiculous drill on top of that. Just doesn't add up. I do believe PR should take it though. I'm certainly no Rennick disciple like the OP but I know a great drumline when I see one. I'm sure PR will take it. But it's DCI and nothing's in stone until it's over. Good luck to them!! -
I wonder that sometimes too. haha.
-
I agree that they are typically more musical than BD but PR's drum book isn't really all that this year. They are certainly a good drumline that is no doubt clean, but I don't think the overall demand is harder than anybody else's. I'm not knocking them. They're great. Just not knocking my socks off.

Their closer sucks. It's no secret. I think if their closer were as exciting as the first two pieces, they'd be in a more positive situation right now. Also, I know they didn't get a lot of their drill until last minute so they're playing catch up. But, I guess that's what SCV is known for....catching up. Hopefully, they can bring it to DATR and then San Antonio. Either way, I'm rooting for them.

I agree on both Blue Stars and Troopers for entire corps improvement. I might add that Madison's percussion section has made huge strides from last year. I have no affiliation with them. It's just something I noticed.

Down by the Riverside
dundermifflin replied to Wildabeast's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
I've seen both shows. SCV has a better show IMO. PR is probably cleaner at this stage though so you're probably right about them winning the first meet. But, when SCV cleans it up, I think they'll beat PR in the end. Just a hunch. -
New Vanguard Marching style
dundermifflin replied to falcon007's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
Mostly the same "Cavie" staff from last year at SCV. If it changed, then it probably changed last year. Fiedler's got nothing to do with the marching style. Fiedler's got nothing to do with any of the show aspects. Fiedler helps make it a better running ADMINISTRATION. -
Narration hypocrites
dundermifflin replied to 84skyrydr's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
I'm certainly no hypocrite. I think narration is lame no matter who does it and how they do it. They should all just shut up and play their instruments. Call me a hater or an old timer or whatever, but this is drum corps we're talking about. I want to hear some great brass with great percussion, see some amazing drill, topped off with some stellar color guard action. There's no need for some weak narration making up for weak show design. -
I think the Scouts are much better than last year. I think the drum and horn books are beefy enough to allow them to jump up quite a bit as soon as they clean it. I'm not a guard person so I won't even comment on them. I do like their show for the most part and I think they will easily take out Colts and Blue Stars when everything previously mentioned, regarding guard unis and work, is in place and at a better level. At any rate, I'm rooting for them. I never marched with them but I have always respected the Scouts. It will be nice to see them in Finals again.

Furlano Brothers
dundermifflin replied to Melissa Sampson's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
Also, I think a couple of them married their Blue Stars sweethearts as well. -
SCV 9 snares 6 tenors 5 basses 4 cymbals I think 7 in the pit.

Which Version is better?
dundermifflin replied to jjeffeory's topic in Historical Junior Corps Discussions
88. -
In '89, SCV's drums were a blonde or natural wood finish. They may have appeared gold in the lights but weren't a gold finish. Just an FYI. However, I do agree with your logic.

DCI Dominance, The Percussion Edition
dundermifflin replied to Jeffe77's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
I would agree that they probably peaked early but they certainly weren't dirty by any means. They may have had a bad lot or two but they were certainly throwing it down, not to mention the ridiculous stuff they played. 6th place in drums? Please.. Again, I don't think they deserved to win drums because they didn't have the right package but I still think they got robbed a bit. Also, a little sidenote of insight. I've met a few of the guys that marched in that battery, and they all seem to have the same memory of that summer.....miserable. Drumming your butt off with nothing to show for it. Oh well, I think they rocked!! -
DCI Dominance, The Percussion Edition
dundermifflin replied to Jeffe77's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
Well, I was really referring to the SCV placement. Those guys owned the word 'drumline' in '92 and unfortunately, got hosed due to a lame show. Not trying to take away from the other groups' success though. -

I've got no beef with '92 Cavies winning. I thought they were the best line with the best show. I just don't agree with the other scores. -
DCI Dominance, The Percussion Edition
dundermifflin replied to Jeffe77's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
Agreed. As for the above mentioned '91 three way. There was a three way tie for field (execution) but Cavies and SCV tied the GE captions that they used for breaking ties. Both Cavies and SCV received trophies. -
Favorite Section 07 Edition
dundermifflin replied to MarchingXylo's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
Percussion: Battery=SCV Pit=BD Horns: Tough more me to say. I really liked Crown but I don't know how difficult their stuff was. Guard: I liked the stuff that Bluecoats did in their show. Pretty creative for the show theme.
