  1. I'm sure supertitles are also a great help for those operagoers who have some hearing loss. It may allow them to still enjoy the opera, and that's cool. Just thought I'd comment since my line of work involves realtime translation for people with some hearing loss.
  2. For other hotel options, you could type in either Lionville or Exton and get a bunch of hotels. It's the next exit east on the turnpike from the Morgantown exit. They're not the cheapest hotels in the world, but if you're looking for your chain hotels, that area will be just fine. It's about 15 minutes from there to the Morgantown exit.
  3. If it helps you any, the first part of Apex's show was "I'm Afraid of Americans" by David Bowie, the middle part was by Aphex Twin, and the end was "Wish" by Nine Inch Nails.
  4. Sure! www.tob.org. Click on Indoor Activities to get the schedule and scores for the entire circuit. If you click on Other Links and then select Member Units, you get a list of the units by chapter. The Pittsburgh area is Chapter 8, and they have their own website. You'll find the link there.
  5. 2005 Kilties re-entry 2005 Bucs - twice that season. First time was the home show when they played Adagio for Strings in memory of Joe Kempf. Then I pretty much cried during the whole retreat at finals.
  6. TIA also has shows in the Pittsburgh area, although the guards you're talking about are probably in TRWEA these days.
  7. That post just brought back some memories. I remember driving to senior guard practice on Sunday morning and not making it back home until Tuesday. In another part of Allentown, a romance was starting up between two of my fellow performers. They're married now. Classics was stuck in Jersey. Heather Beyer needs to get on here and share her memories of their time in the hotel. Memories...
  8. You would be amazed at what thieves will take. I'm in school to become a court reporter, and we've had multiple instances of people having their steno machines stolen. Now, most people have no clue what a steno machine looks like or how much it's worth. That doesn't stop thieves. One girl I know had her steno machine and laptop stolen from her car. The thieves kept the laptop, and the steno machine ended up in the Schuylkill River. I hope they catch these guys. KK deserves a break.
  9. I'll miss Scranton...first place my parents ever got to see me do drum corps, multiple ACCs experiences, countless good times at the Stadium Club (including the time that Jeff and I bombed the Taliban) and my last DCA finals as a performer were all at that place. Even with its faults, it was a good place, and it was only 2 hours away from my house. And to those who are concerned about the parking in Rochester...I got my car keyed at Scranton one year. Didn't have a problem with my car in Rochester. Crime can happen anywhere.
  10. TOB does it with the placements, although we don't announce whether anybody got any penalties. IMHO, I prefer announcing of the special awards with the placement for the sole reason that it retains some of the suspense of who won the show. If the same group won High Visual and High Music and it was announced before the placements, you pretty much already know who won the show.
  11. Reading+Syracuse+Hawthorne+Empire = Buccabrigalleromen There was a longer version of this we had during my marching days, but I can't remember it.
  12. Dan, I agree with you. However, I feel the spirit of my mother taking over me and she wants to say that why spend money when you can make much more than $33 a day working a job, heck, why not two jobs? That's why I couldn't march junior corps when I was of age. I wouldn't have been allowed to march even DCA back then because I had to work. Drum corps does provide a great experience. I wish that more kids who come from marginal backgrounds could be able to participate. I'll argue that those kids would get more benefits from the experience than kids from good middle-class homes.
  13. My vote goes to Mo' Better Blues. And IMHO, Drumline gets ragged on unfairly in these quarters. I think some people expect the movie to reflect their experience or their style of playing. The movie is about HBC marching bands and their style. Once you accept that, it's a very entertaining movie.
  14. I am really over shows done to Kelly Clarkson, especially Breakaway. In TIA about two seasons ago that's all you heard, it seemed. I'm also over Pirates of the Caribbean.
  15. Ray is a great guy. I know I'll be doing what I can to help him out.
  16. I sure did when I marched. But I made sure to follow my corps rules about smoking...no smoking in uniform, pick up your butts on your home practice field, no smoking on school grounds, etc. Did it affect me? It would be hard for me to pin every issue I had on smoking. Call it one of many factors.
  17. I got my second envelope from the friendly folks at NJA this weekend.
  18. I agree with you. However, I see people talking loudly on their cell phones everywhere. At the store, the bank, shows, you name it. So unfortunately, yes sometimes you have to ask an adult to not speak on the phone during a performance. Some people are just that stupid.
  19. There are some pictures from this season in the program, at least it looks that way to me. I could be wrong (and you can tell me that I'm wrong...it's OK), but here are some examples of current season photos in the program: The cover shot and the shot of Bucs guard in their writeup Bush's guard Cabs guard possibly Hurcs guard (my memory's shaky on that one) Sky's guard
  20. My sinuses have been suffering all week, more so than my usual sinus troubles.
  21. I just broke out last year's program, and you would be right. Cabs have been at finals in all but one of the DCA open class championships. They didn't compete in the first championships. According to that program book, Cabs holds that record over the Hurricanes (cut in the 86 and 89 prelims) and the Bucs (cut in 94 and 95).
  22. Gee, I must have been the only person not to feel afraid about the neighborhood around the stadium. I didn't think it was that bad. It wasn't great, but I've seen neighborhoods in Syracuse that looked worse than that. Maybe I'm jaded after all these years living near Philly and going to school there. If you think Rochester was nasty, try Philly on for size.
  23. Fred, Kudos to you for starting this topic! I'd like to join the chorus of people praising this year's program book. I loved it! I'd also like to praise the runners, Alan and the Empire people, and everybody that was helping out. MrBud, I'd like to point out that not only was Glen tabulating that day, he was also the chief judge and T&P judge for the A class corps. That man ran around the whole day and night working for the event. I understand your concerns about deciding whether or not to take your family to the event, but like other people have said, Glen had way too much stuff to do. He worked his tail off the whole weekend.
  24. I'll be sure to tell him that when he gets home. He'll love it! For more in-town PR, check out www.wroctv.com. DCA (and a photo of Empire's drumline, I think) is on the front page. It's a good story, even if the writer has some trouble with proper grammar.
  25. At least your husband comes kind of close. My husband tends to refer to every event, whether it's drum corps, a marching band competition, or an indoor guard show, as "a guard show". He also calls indoor guard "a Tori Amos pajama party", but that's another subject!
