  1. High cam thoughts on the Colts: The fiery silks during the first half of the show are very effective The wind seemed to help their effects in the beginning This is a much more ambitious show than the Scouts. Strong performance and the sound balance for solos was just right. The ending needs to be--and probably will be--punched up.
  2. High Cam Thoughts on Madison: The lighter uniforms look good from a distance The tosses by the rifles were solid. Musically, I liked the jazz part in the middle of the show and it was played well. There's too little jazz in drum corps these days. The soundboard guy should ease off the volume on the solos. It was too high relative to the ensemble Overall, this looks and feels like a show from the late 90's. That's not necessarily a bad thing. I could end up really digging it.
  3. Thanks for that. It's coming along nicely. I have to wonder if there will eventually be an ending that pays off what the Valkyrie myth is about. In the myth, the Valkyries choose which fallen soldiers get to go to Valhalla after their deaths.
  4. Waking up late on the East Coast to check the scores and analyze them a bit. Interesting to note that all three of the bottom corps (Mandarins, Academy, and Troopers) closed their spreads with the top 2 compared to the Clovis show last year. Mandarins did it the most. But, the other two weren't insignificant. I don't know if this was a judging quirk or an actual sign that all three came into the show better than last year.
  5. In Finals last year, the Crossmen were just 2 tenths behind Phantom, who were in 11th Place. In yesterday's results, Phantom's spread vs. the leaders was worse than last year. Crossmen were 1.4 points behind Mandarins and 2.2 behind Blue Knights. Blue Stars spread got closer to the leaders than their slow start last year. I am cautiously optimistic that this show (and corps) is better than last year. We have to wait until Saturday's show to get any evidence of that. Blue Stars ended up 3.3 ahead of the Crossmen last year and they are off to a better start this year. I am going to be paying very close to the spread vs. BS on Saturday.
  6. It was just a story about someone new seeing the show. Just a story about a newbie reacting to the show I don't mind rebuttal, but everyone jumped on me like I suddenly agree with her, saying things like I declared the show is bad just because I told the story.
  7. Where in my post did I call this season dead? Seriously, there appears to be a lot of projection going on around here. You are making conclusions that I made a conclusion about the show. I clearly did not. Why so senstitive? She may have minimal drum corps experience, but extensive exposure to the opera and musical theater--cultural forms that modern drum corps often use as inspiration and source material.
  8. I neither used the word "irrelevance", nor drew a conclusion about the show. Where did you get this from? I merely reported what I clearly defined as a lay person said to me. I haven't made a conclusion about the show. Since we met as mutual fans of science fiction and the TV show "Babylon Five", I think she's intelligent enough to figure out that Babylon has several possible meanings. So, are you saying people--newbies or current fans--who loved SOS are idiots? Or, was Propaganda a bad show for the Cavaliers because the theme was rammed down our throats? (For the record, I loved that show, too)
  9. My friend lives near Fernley. She's not a drum corps person, though she was exposed to it a bit when she was growing up in Massachusetts in the late 60's/early 70's. But, she's inquisitive and is a classical music fan, as well as being quite cultured. She went to part of the ensemble practice and the full run through with her husband and wasn't impressed. Somehow she knew the theme was "other side of the tracks" and said her untrained eye didn't see any cohesion between actions and music. (She did share a short clip with me. She didn't know that was against the rules. I won't post it anywhere.) Probably just an example of what I've said for years--drum corps is no longer accessible to lay people and themes aren't always apparent unless the designer explains it.. But, the DCI podcast said the show has something to do with Irish people and Gangs of New York (or something). I guess that didn't come across from the name of the show or what my inexperienced friend watched.
  10. I remember the Crossmen (my corps) sharing a campus with the Madison Scouts in North Carolina. Several Crossmen girls started dating Madison Scouts.
  11. I was wondering why they weren't schedule last. I didn't know about the "top 6" part of the rule. Thanks. May the Scouts have a satisfying season. I have always enjoyed them.

  13. Are the Scouts allowed to perform later because it is their home show? I thought appearance order was randomly determined within groups of three. The Colts are in the 13-15 group and should be performing after the Scouts.
  14. I had problems with a few, but I figured it out. It seemed to be a formatting issue.

  16. I was once told by an older drill designer that headgear was important to GE. It made people look taller and it was easier to see the patterns. But, so many corps go without headgear now without any obvious impact on their GE score, I don't think those old rules apply. By all the old rules, Blue Stars costumes should have hurt them in GE--outfits that made their middle wider, no hat--and yet, they did just fine relative to the Crossmen.
  17. The video has been removed. So, I'm glad I saw it last night. I love everything about this show. I need to figure out a way to see it live before DCI East. I can't wait that long. Drum major uniforms from Twitter:
  18. This Crossmen from the 70’s loves what they are doing here. I saw them practice their show this week and it will look fantastic with this motif. The theme of the show is more in line with early Crossmen than a lot of other recent shows. Now, I want Bones to appear with an axe.
  19. I saw an ensemble practice the other night. I predict live crowds are going to enjoy this show very much. I predict the corps is going to enjoy performing this show very much. The judges may like it also. It's very accessible to a non-"music major" crowd, while also having the bells and whistles that should get some good content scores. Signed, Non "music major" person
  20. From Instagram, a sample of the show by just the hornline:
