  1. Finalist Predictions 1-4: Anyone's game between Cavies, BD, Cadets, and Crown 5: Phantom. They have it LOCKED. 6-7: SCV, Bluecoats. might become 6-8 if Madison makes the right adjustments this week and CLEAN it. 8-11: Madison (most likely 8th), BAC, Blue Stars, Blue Knights 12: Spirit or Troopers.
  2. This show really needs a lot of tweaking to bring out the thematic elements more. Other than the requiem and the closer, it's not doing much for me.
  3. Drum corps shows will become more than just drill and music and become multi-media presentations. Think of what Star Alumni did last year, with footage of past shows and interviews being played on the jumbo-trons while the live music is being performed. In addition to that, the props that have been used these past few years will all become digital screens, like BD's cube prop with changing video and images projected onto them as the show progresses. Drum Corps AND Marching Band will resemble less and less the traditional form we are used to and become more like Blast! productions. But before all this happens, something drastic has to happen, which was mentioned in an earlier post: drum corps must move completely indoors. Unless of course, all of this technology becomes water-proof, which can definitely happen in 15 years from now. But Global Warming, as also previously mentioned, will undoubtedly take the marching arts off the field and into gymnasiums around the country. And when that happens, we will be on equal footing with our DCI's Asian brethren (read overlords), who already perform in contests held in gyms. And when all this happens, DCI will truly become Drum Corps INTERNATIONAL.
  4. Sorry, I just can't sit through an entire recording of the 70's, video or audio. Many of the hornlines, though awesomely loud, played with absolutely zero attention to tone quality. Visually, I just can't stand the 10 or so minutes of symmetrical drill juxtaposed with park and blows. The color guards executed with great military precision, but they are no match for today's guards in terms of artistry and emotional expressiveness. I'm glad the activity has changed since then into something almost unrecognizable from those days. Because if it didn't, I doubt I would have become a fan of drum corps. Just being honest.
  5. I'm loving BD's show this year, but I just wish they would really go all out and push the bar with show design even more, especially visually. I think the props are really being under-utilized right now, especially the the cubes! I hope they find a better way to integrate the props with the rest of the drill before finals rolls around, like the way they did with the mirrors last year or the poles in 2008 (sorry, wasn't a fan of the chairs in '09). One of my favorite visual moments this year is the stair-building with the bars, which is just a genius use of dimension in visual design.
  6. "Holy Garfield on the outside. Green Machine. Against Devils in Blue. Green Machine back in the lead. CROWN with a late turn, it's GOING TO BE A PHOTO FINISH!"
  7. Looks like cavs ran out of gas towards the end. Other than that though, nobody is going to beat them visually.
  8. I don't think I've ever agreed with another DCP post as much as I have with this one.
  9. Cirque de Solei done in big broadway production style.
  10. The encore video, or all videos for that matter don't seem to be showing up in HD for me. Is there a setting I'm supposed to change? The videos on media box should be the same quality as the facebook one right?
  11. Maybe something a tad more accessible music wise but keep pushing the envelope.
  12. I like it the way it is. No more, no less.
  13. More kids get to march and get the drum corps experience. 150 > 135. As for the pioneer or cascades argument, design better shows and hire better instructors and the talent will come flowing in too.
  14. I was looking up the theme for this year's Tournament of Roses Parade and it got me thinking: What if DCI assigned a theme annually that all corps had to design around. For example, if say the theme next year was "Tapestry of Nations" (yes, I took it from the Disney show), then each corps would design their productions around a certain culture or country around the world. For example, Crown could do a show with french music or music that references France like American in Paris, Blue Devils can look into the roots of their musical identity and delve into South African Jazz, and Phantom Regiment or Vanguard would do a show on Eastern Europe or Russia since they both do it so so well. Each year the theme would change, so perhaps the next year will be "Celestial Bodies" with planets as a theme or "Movements of Power and Grace" centering around various dance styles from ballet to modern dance. DCI would be able to use these themes to market their shows as near-seamless production. It think it's a rather fascinating idea, no?
  15. I want something completely new. Not necessarily original music but new musical selections that no corps has done before. I know I'm in the minority here but I don't want another rehash of West Side Story or Appalachian Springs or whatever. I'm really tired of seeing corps rehashing shows and dubbing it "return of the classics". This is DCI, where the standards of design and performance in the marching arts are set and advanced. The Cadets need to return to the forefront of that and bring the pageantry world another game changer.
  16. Anyone still wants to justify booing for scores, spreads or other crap, just take a look at the Star of Indiana thread.
