  1. I remember the inside of the bell being painted white.
  2. Let's get this back to Pioneer. Go to their website. Follow the link. VOTE!
  3. That's going to be bad-###. Perhaps the theme of the show will convey the grittier side of achieving the American Dream?
  4. '92 was a "second chance". '97 was magic where everything came together the first time.
  5. Congrats Racine Scouts. I'm sure being able to free up $5,000 in your budget will go a long way.
  6. Looks like you had great attendance. I hope you had a lot of veterans returning.
  7. It was exciting to watch the video of camp and see all those kids in attendance. How great is it that a lower tier corps can get such a big pool of talent? Hats off the Surf for doing such a good job recruiting. Anyone willing to share the secrets?
  8. For it's prescience and poignancy, I would have to go with the 1984 27th Lancers. Their closer of Michel LeGrand's "No Matter What Happens" is tops in my book.
  9. The jazz pianist Dave Brubeck became one of Milhaud's most famous students when Brubeck furthered his music studies at Mills College in the late 1940s (he named his eldest son Darius). In a February 2010 interview with Jazzwax, Brubeck said he attended Mills, a women's college (men were allowed in graduate programs), specifically to study with Milhaud, saying "Milhaud was an enormously gifted classical composer and teacher who loved jazz and incorporated it into his work. My older brother Howard was his assistant and had taken all of his classes."[cite this quote] Milhaud's former students also include popular songwriter Burt Bacharach.[6] Milhaud told Bacharach, "Don't be afraid of writing something people can remember and whistle. Don't ever feel discomfited by a melody".[7] Now if Blue Devils could just complete the circle and play "La creation du monde", I could die a happy (happier) man.
  10. Pioneer during Roman Blenski is an even better question. I would like to see Pioneer succeed competitively in the near future. They have already succeeded as a well run, financially stable organization. Roman is a great guy with a certain kind of charisma and should use that to his advantage withing the many local non-profit arts education groups in Milwaukee. I just don't get the impression he is doing that. When it comes to receiving grant money it's often who you know in addition to a well written grant proposal. Pioneer has the proven track record as an organization serving youth. It's a shame they are not receiving that recognition locally. Gotta run to Cudahy for the band comp. but will email Pio some info to help them get started.
  11. Genocide, homicide and terrorism used for entertainment purposes? No thanks.
  12. Awww...way to rain on my parade. The "swoosh" of 30 flags in unison can never be synthetically reproduced but I like your dig at superfluous synth usage.
  13. Great moments like the best unaccompanied flag feature ever. You know the one, when the pilot (corps) cuts the engine and all you can hear is the sound of the wind. God forbid they should bring back some not so great moments. A plane formation with "prop" props. Oh, I get it. De Plane, De Plane.
  14. I've been thinking about resources corps have at their disposal to aid in the recruitment process. One of the biggest, most eye-catching item is the food truck. How many corps offer to feed high school or college marching bands during their Fall rehearsals? Many programs have Saturday rehearsals and I think it would be a great idea if a corps offered to cater a rehearsal. Burgers and hot dogs wouldn't be a huge financial investment. A different high school/college each Saturday. The corps could just make it a "soft sell". Have info available but not step on any toes with heavy-handed recruiting. What are other recruiting options can you think of that don't require a big financial investment?
  15. Wouldn't that piece have been a wonderful addition to the Glassmen's "gold" years? Maybe there's hope yet.
  16. The Blue Devils Present- Carnegie Hall January 16, 1938
  17. The Four Seasons A mash-up of Haydn's The Seasons, Frankie Valle, and Vivaldi's The Four Seasons.
  18. SCV's ballad "The Eternal Knot". It was my favorite emotional moment of the whole season. That hook combined with the staging of the guard and marching member will haunt me for a long time. "East of Eden" is a close second.
  19. I can't imagine what it would be like having cochlear implants and listening to Dr. Beat all day. It just seems like that would be unbearable. Your doctor would know if steady noise like that would be detrimental. Good luck to you in your quest to march. I think Pioneer might be a good fit. You sound like the kind of hard working, scrappy kid (with limited brass experience) that would really flourish in the type of environment provided by Pioneer. Heck, bring a couple friends along with you.
