  1. Lets just leave it at this, make sure you know if you are going to be going through any tunnels at night. 'Nuff said. :sshh:
  2. OK, if I am laying on my deathbed with just a few minutes to live and could hear one hornline I would have to go Blue Devils. Otherwise I love them all. They each bring something a little different to the table.
  3. I know a guy who played clarinet in the U.S. Army band, but played keyboards in BD(yes, blue devils), and tenors in Steel City. Go figure.
  4. I have an old piston/slide sop made by Getzen. I play trumpet on a 1950's King Silversonic. I also have a olds ultratone 2 valve sop I use when playing with Steel City alum.
  5. See if there is a Sam Ash store near you. They always have a nice selection of new and used trumpets. Like somebody else already said, try as many horns as possible. And remember, trumpets are like cars, no two are exactly alike. Just because you play one in a store or maybe a buddies, then go online to make a purchase, you might not be happy. My favorite is the King.
  6. DCI: Hearing our corps director for Finleyville Royal Crusaders tell us at prelims in Birmingham in 1980 that this would be the corps last show.........ever. DCA: 1986 Steel at finals, 'nuff said.
  7. Then they wouldn't be the Star Alumni Corps, would they. b**bs This is something that I never will understand, at least Hawthorne has it right. :P
  8. Two things I have to address here. 1. Is this not the historical dicussion meaning more than 10 years ago? 2. Under rated doesn't mean overall best. Having said that, (I feel better now ) my unbiased pick would be the General Butler Vagabonds, 1975. We beat Madison in M.A. at the AIO that year.
  9. Vagabondsreunion@aol.com This is the e-mail to reply to for info on the reunion, thanks.
  10. I know you asked for "all time greatest", but I really don't know if you can compare Hawthorne's Malaguena to BD's Legend to Madison Mac Park to etc., etc., etc., but my "all time favorite" is ................................ 1975, Madison Scouts, Mac Park, hands down. b**bs b**bs b**bs b**bs b**bs
  11. Just got back from the 1st meeting. We are trying to set the reunion for the saturday before or after thanksgiving this year. We will have an e-mail addy soon to reply back to. I will post it as soon as I know. The next planning meeting will be in March, I will post the date, time, and place as soon as I know for sure.
  12. I gotta answer this honestly. As you can tell by my sig., my DCI marching days were all spent in non top 12 corps. I will always cherish those memories, but I really wish I could have marched in a top 12 corps(esp. either BD or SCV) In those days, it wasn't as common for people to jump from 2/3 corps to the top 12's. Having said that, one good thing about being in 2/3 corps is that you get to see all the top 12's.
  13. Honest to G** true story. Back in my GB Vagabonds day, we had a bari player who shaved half of his moustache off before a show and didn't realize it. Boy, did he look funny. I won't say what jr. corps I was in, but we had a few slightly older members. They kept clean shaven all summer while a few of the legal age guys grew beards. Seems that anytime another corps would challenge members ages, they would pick out the guys with facial hair.
  14. I have heard through the grapevine that some former members are interested in having a reunion. I was told secondhand that there wil be a meeting thursday, Feb. 5 at the bowling alley on fairground hill road.
  15. Great topic, I enjoyed finding out who some of these guys were, like the Bridgemen's "77 soloist in Spanosh Dreams. I paly the tape all the time, can't get enough. For some strange reason, I knew Tom M. from the Plaid, had the pleasure of meeting him back in the day. He was probally the 1st sop screamer I looked up to. But if I had to vote, it would go to Curt Hawkins, (because he paid me to say that) b**bs
  16. I am pretty sure on this fact, Severville (sp) TN. was the 1st show that Spirit competed at after the accident that took one of the all-time greatest horn instructor. I don't remember if they had added "Georgia" yet to the opener, but I will never forget hearing them in prelims at Birmingham. A couple of buddies and I had snuck into the reserved for judges section in the upper deck of the stadium. All I can say is...... WOW ! ! ! ! ! !
  17. Here's a biker-drum corps story for you. I know this one to be true because I was there, and I never tell stories. It was either '76 or'77 and we were at a show in Huntington, PA. A few miles away in the hills was some kind of bluegrass festival. A large portion of the Pagans MC were at the bluegrass festival. (Pagans main base is Altoona PA) Seems some of the bikers decided to let their dogs fight each other. ^0^ Some redneck local didn't like it and shot one the main leaders of the Pagans. :( The whole town was shutdown and we were told to hold-up at the Mickey D's right on US22. First came the bikers down the highway, at least 200 plus. Then came the cops, 4 to a car, maybe 100 cars. Needless to say, the show was cancelled. <**>
  18. Come on, it's not cheating, I used Jet-Tones as a young lad also. ^0^ Heck, anything to go a little higher than the next guy, right? I b**bs had both the model with just the flat cup on the end of the shank and the MF style with a little bit of a "V". I still have a flugel horn MF jet-tone mouthpiece but no flugel horn.
  19. Wow, I never gave this any thought until now. Looking back, everyone I know who has gone into the HOF has been a judge, director, or staff. I don't recall ever seeing an actual marching player(I know alot of the HOF members started out as a marching player, but it was what they did later that people recognize) in the HOF. Is there such a thing? I guess I could do a little research, but if anyone knows off the top of the heads about this, I am curious to know.
  20. I figured it out after the second phone started to ring, but the "theater folk" sitting in front of us turned to yell when the 3rd phone started. Also, great review.
  21. I got the chance to see Shockwave - Blast II in Pittsburgh, PA right after christmas. I was told that they are going to Montana in the near future to record, I am not sure if it is just for a CD or video. I would suggest that you buy the DVD of Blast. It has a lot of behind the scenes stuff you will find very informative.
  22. I have seen something along this line while playing in the Marine D&B. There was a guy from Texas, and all I remember is his last name, Donahue, who could easily play with any corps lead bari line. But for some reason, he insisted on not only playing 3rd bari, but being the only 3rd bari in the entire hornline. He would do solo work, but never played lead. We never knew why, and never asked, either.
  23. The music store suggestion is your best bet, but in case there are none handy, try wal-mart or a larger hardware store and ask for a coffee maker brush.
  24. The best contra player I have ever had the pleasure of playing with is female. Debbie Knisely. Just to prove the point, at a recent indoor show in Philly, she palyed with at least 3 corps that night that I remember, Steel City, Archie, and Yankee Rebels. B)
