  1. we "has" a winner!!!! and cheers to all who "get it"!!
  2. Why don't you let your kid decide what's in his/her best interest (as far as drum corps)
  3. your desire to volunteer for Bugles Across America is admirable! have you checked out the Kanstul bugle? I have one in silver plate I got for $225 NEW from Pick Music. It's made in America, top quality, great sound, and a great value. it's about half the price of the Getzen Field Trumpet (I think that's the one you're referring to). It would be a great bugle for your volunteer work.
  4. not for long!! those Impulse kids are just getting started. historically they leap several points outside of California (in this case AZ doesn't count as "outside california")
  5. in THailand, you might have access to only Yamaha and Dynasty. but you should try to get the Kanstul euphoniums which are pretty good. they have a dark rich sound. The Dynasty stuff is inexpensive but not built to last. the Yamaha trumpets are pretty good. the Yamaha tubas are very good. you should also consider the Kanstul mellophone. they have the best intonation of any mello on the market.
  6. seems pre-fab... where's the spontaneity? that's no fun drum corps sucks now...
  7. Pick Music carries excellent G bugles (no valves) made by Kanstul. I have one and it's perfect. The price was less expensive than any other quality bugle I could find. you should call PC King at 717 255 0665
  8. it's not even trademarked as far as i could tell. i thought the King sopranos called "powerbore" first? i don't know. seems like Wayne Downey once said they developed the powerbore to be more for the lead players anyway.
  9. it sounds like you are unfairly referring to Kanstul, which is a very small company. they have said many times that they can't afford to play the marketing game with Dynasty (made in Brazil, by the way) or Yamaha (made in Taiwan) or even King (whose parent company Conn-Selmer is owned by Steinway & Sons) thank god for Academy who had the huevos to invest in Kanstul - and they sound great on them! maybe the'll start a trend?
  10. I agree. the IMPACT from a line of G bugles is much greater than from a line of Bb horns. I think its the most noticeable in the low brass. the bugles were all more conical and had larger bores than their Bb counterparts. combine a longer horn, larger bore, heavier materials and you had a weapon with greater IMPACT
  11. it's an excellent stadium, quite worthy of div II/III. the school has excellent facilities and is close to many good shops/restaurants, parking is good. :D
  12. in those days, a few drum corps used yamaha drums, and that's about it. yamaha wanted to get into marching horns but didnt want to make G bugles. they recognzied that the market for G bugles was very small in the big picture. they put into motion a plan to change from G bugles to Bb. at that time, bands looked up to the corps activity for inspiration. i think we can agree that it may be the other way around now. anyway, if the bands looked UP to corps, and if corps used yamaha equipment, then yamaha equipment would become highly marketable to a much larger group. if you think that yamaha, out of the goodness of their hearts, came along to "ease the burden on financially strapped drumcorps" then you are in la la land! business is business. and yamaha is the biggest instrument maker in the world. would exxonmobile give away gas to cashstrapped families to help them get to work? heck no. WAKE UP!! I never said a director or a staff would directly profit from going yamaha. (but if you ask the right people, a certain corps received a donation of a very extensive PA system within weeks of that rule being approved) the organization benefits in other ways: they get free goods (latest and greatest, or first ones to use amps, electronics, etc), which becomes a great marketing and recruiting tool. the Top Twelve hasn't changed in years, but for one or two new faces now and then. come on, WAKE UP!!
  13. you dont think some of those corps are co-dependant? an example being crossmen and cadets for example. and its also a case of "if you cant beat 'em, join 'em". can't fight progress. especially if you think you might get free equipment too. remember that the top twelve are elitist.
  14. So Yamaha accomplished getting Bb horns approved. Then what? Next they sponsor corps with free horns (we've already had this debate, but it's a fact that they have given hundreds of free instruments, ask around and you'll see) Their logo becomes plastered on the side of everyones trucks and overnight Yamaha becomes a top supplier to the activity. Now that Pandora's Box is open theres no going back. After all, who stands to profit from the addition of woodwinds, amps, electronics to the activity? There is only one answer: YAMAHA yamaha = ^0^ Would supposedly cash-strapped corps actively campaign to add expensive equipment? COME ON, PEOPLE!! WAKE UP!!! Those corps directors proposing these rules stand to gain by receiving FREE equipment from YAMAHA. Yamaha knows that by getting certain rules passed, and then giving away some equipment to the big boys, all the other corps will be forced to fall in line by "keeping up with the Jones's" Connect the dots further and see that YAMAHA (a large sponsor of BOA of course) is seeking to tie the two activities together. who stands to profit from this? Hmmmm.... and all the other bands from all other circuits, will fall in line by purchasing YAMAHA products...
  15. the Olds marching instruments look a LOT like the Bach and early Yamaha marching instruments. I'm talking about the Olds horns made in the 80's and 90's on forward. i think it was Blessing making marching horns for Bach and Yamaha until yamaha tooled up in grand rapids and now taiwan. with the addition of King to the Selmer family, Conn-Selmer no longer needed those bach marching instruments.
  16. The question should be, who stands to profit from the addition of woodwinds, amps, electronics to the activity? there is only one answer: YAMAHA yamaha = ^0^ you could connect the dots and see that YAMAHA (a large sponsor of BOA) is seeking to tie the two activities together. who stands to profit from this? Hmmmm.... and all the other bands from all other circuits, will fall in line by purchasing YAMAHA products...
  17. It's hard to say "no" when Yamaha is giving it away, isn't it? Why do we play Bb in the first place? The following rules changes and new rules proposals were secretly backed by Yamaha, by working through influential voting members of DCI, with promises of free equipment if these rules were passed: Step 1 - Approval of three valves because they never made G bugles and had to get two things done first: 1) three valves approved and 2) any key instruments approved We never needed three valves before, right? Most of us agree on that. :) Step 2 - Allow any key instruments thus opening the door for yamaha to start selling horns where they were not selling horns before Who wants to sell horns, but can't make G bugles? King, Kanstul, DEG were doing just fine with G Bugles. Who's not in this game? Yamaha. Step 3 - Allow amps why not? they make amps don't they? Step 4 - Allow electronics why not? they make electronics, don't they? Step 4-A - Pass that rule about squirting water on the field. obviously to protect the amps and electronics! This is all too perfect! :P Step 5 - Approve saxophones keep your eyes open. this has come up for vote TWICE already. why? because Yamaha sells saxophones too. Step 6 - Possible merger with BOA? (Yamaha is their largest sponsor after all ^0^ ) or evolution of a new activity. Regardless, it means the death of drum corps! <**> It all adds up, doesn't it? Pity that it's too late to do anything about it
  18. well if that's the way it is, then its a dang shame Kanstul can't play with the big boys. IMHO those are the best horns available in Bb or G and there's only ONE company whos G bugles should be considered...Kanstul!
  19. the whole reason for drum corps in the first place was to get kids off the street and teach them to play a simple instrument, something they could learn in an afternoon, and then perform on it later that day. the g bugles were easier to play. it so happened that they were louder! viva la G Bugles! :P but since yamaha now has its way (Bb instruments, electronics, amplification...watch! we WILL see saxophones in the future) there is just no going back. too bad for drum corps. it will soon be merely an extension of BOA <**>
  20. unfortunately, not even for free horns would a div I corps switch back. not competitive.
  21. I'll buy THAT for a dollar... i liked 84, 87, 88, 89, 92
  22. well anyone who uses a Schagerl rotary as their avatar can't be all bad I guess! :P
