  1. Sue It was a general complaint that they were corrupting SCV's traditions (that the musical lines were all male and they were changing it, blah blah blah). Some guard members had even gone so far to insist that three follow the guard hair requirements (I don't recall the details but they wanted them to put their hair up a certain way under their hats).
  2. It was kind of bizarre and I really wouldn't have believed it happened except seeing it first hand. I should clarify this complaining didn't happen the entire season but during the beginning (and ended when Joey told the biggest complainers to stop because the three were members of the drumline and not guard members). And it was more from some long term members than the whole guard in general.
  3. She was. With Peggy Watson (who played with BD in 84) and Carol Everett all played mallets for SCV in 83. That year the biggest complaints about women in the drumline came from the colorguard. Sam I don't know if you knew this but Kim had played baritone for the San Jose Raiders before she played mallets for SCV.
  4. Greg Gilman told me I would have a better time with Blue Devils. :)
  5. I remember in 84 the guard calling the refineries at night the "Emerald City". I could swear I heard some of them singing "follow the yellow brick road." What was funny at night were the warm blasts of air that would occur periodically when the refineries were burning off the excess.
  6. I still have the Phantom guard gloves I traded for after 84 finals.
  7. It happened to me. My SCV star disappeared after 83 finals.
  8. She was with Mangione in 1983. That was the broadcast when Rondinero asked Chuck what he thought of a corps' hornline and Churck's respone is he thought the drums were great. Birch was moved by SCV's closer, Appalachian Spring. She made comments about her time with Martha Graham's dance company and performing it. But who can forget Rob McConnell's "puce" comment in 1982.
  9. You need to look at the drop in BD's GE drum scores from prelims to finals.
  10. Well I have to agree with Kushy on this one. To me bored is for people who don't want to live beyond the level of mediocrity.
  11. Gee mister you've must have marched old time drum corps. We only had grass on our fields. I bet you even had G Bugles with piston and rotor. :) I have to agree to Matt on this one. Some of the conversation on the rest of DCP can be rather mundane. It's tiring at times seeing post after post about who was the best ... (fill in with your favorite drum corps category). Or to be corrected about a drum corps event -- that you experienced, i.e. being present at -- by someone who wasn't even a twinkle in their father's eye when the event occurred (I know I've never had a dot book strung around my neck, but I do know what a grease board is). CE was a great place to find out information and dialogue to work out thoughts and opinions, as someone earlier pointed out, with people who were not entirely strangers but more family. Yes the discussion on CE was intense at times. As it would be when discussing issues that strike personal chords. But there was a certain rhythm that rose and fell on the board that eventually reached an equal Librium. Yes statements would get personal, but that again this comes from the intense passion aroused with personal issues. And I don't think any of us who posted regularly on CE can pick up a stone and say we're not guilty of violating that personal protocol. It was the nature of the forum, but when it was violated there was enough criticism by others to not let the personal attack go unnoticed. I've also seen an argument that threads "were hijacked" as some kind of justification to close CE. It's a weak statement that comes from unrealistic expectations upon free discussion. CE was a free form where the threads would evolve with the input placed into them. Conversation in real life isn't controlled, unless it's a presentation with an outline and a moderator leading the discussion for a set period of time. Threads change because each person posting has a different aspect, or perception, to add. To complain they were "hijacked" is based upon an unrealistic belief that the response to a posted discussion statement would follow a certain pattern that the poster wanted. When it didn't it became "hijacked". I agree with Purpleknights (and several other earlier posters) DCP CE forum was one of the better political discussion sites and a bit more. It's a shame that it was ended abruptly.
  12. Just a nit-noid thing, but there is no need to place "band" after the world mariachi. As my father-in-law -- who has been involved with mariachis his whole life -- has pointed out to me (time and time again) saying mariachi band is like saying band band. Mariachi designates what type of instrumentation is involved -- it would be the difference in saying orchestra and wind ensemble. A mariachi is primarily string with some brass (and the occassional harp) as opposed to a Banda that is brass based.
  13. It would have come out the same. BD was still the better corps that night in their overall performance. I saw SCV's tape from their 82 finals performance. It was shot from the around the press box. When the bottle dance started the crowd was so loud in the stands that there was no possible way to hear the music from the field.
  14. I thought it was more shock at it happening than anything else. Wasn't the once over more for what had happened earlier in the day when the hornline started barking at Garfield's guard?
  15. After finals in Orlando I had some time to talk to Jerry more than I ever had when I marched. If I remember correctly he passed away the next year. A name I'm surprised I haven't seen is Gail Royer. A man very dedicated to the drum corps activity and the heart of SCV for so many years.
  16. Did anyone else catch the breathing through the horn sound during the Blue Coats show?
  17. Years ago (notice the key phrase) when I was starting to play there was a discussion on how air intake should be done. One idea was to do it from the sides of the mouth. Because the lips didn't need to be "re-set" after each breath. But it never allowed enough air in at one time. The other was to drop the lower jaw. It allowed for more air but quickly, but the lips had to be "re-set" each time. What is the thinking on this now? From my Corps days the second was the preferred method. But I see many concert brass using the previous suggestion.
  18. Hey I wore those ruffles (or dickie to be accurate). It was all the rage, just look at prom photos from that era. :)
  19. Right now I have images of pink uniforms with the Mickey Mouse Club closer going through my mind. Just don't see the intimidating look with Star. M -i-c (see how we spend money) k-e-y (Why? because we're corporate sponsored). M-o-n-e-y
  20. Where are the George Zingali stories? This question is meant in a positive way. I've heard numerous stories about little quirks he would use to get people to think about marching well.
  21. I would assume they're doing it now. Most insurance companies require any activity that has children involved to do background checks of staff and volunteers. Having said that, even if a background check is done it may not necessarily show a problem. If the person has never been caught or accussed in public of the crime it won't show up on a background check.
