  1. June 29 Run-Down Sorry for the delay. I'm posting from London and it took me a bit to get to this today! June 29 gave us 20 World Class corps in competition for the first time. We will hit that number next on July 5. The big question to be answered was high high would the Blue Devils go after six nights without a competition. The answer is Blue Devils score went up 4.250 points, but that was only good enough for the #5 spot compared to the #2 spot back on June 23 when the corps last competed. More importantly, however, is that the gap between Santa Clara Vanguard and Blue Devils remained exactly the same at 0.400 points. Amazingly, there appear to be five corps within striking distance of the title with only 1.750 points separating #1 and #5. This time last year that gap was 3.900 points. In fact, only three corps were within 1.900 points of the #1 ranking this time last year (Santa Clara Vanguard, Blue Devils, Bluecoats) and those three corps wound up the medalists on finals night. In head-to-head competition, Spirit of Atlanta maintained its hold on the #12 spot with Phantom Regiment falling just outside the top 12 at #13. Spartans debuted at #21, the highest ranked Open Class corps going to Indianapolis. 7th Regiment debuted at #26.
  2. June 28 Run-Down Here we go! All of last year's finalists have now competed at least once. If the season ended today, Spirit of Atlanta would return to finals for the first time since 2013 and Phantom Regiment would miss finals for the first time since 1973. Bluecoats and Santa Clara Vanguard maintain their undefeated seasons so far. The two corps meet relatively soon in Lisle, IL on July 5. There were several large score increases, mostly due to time off: Santa Clara Vanguard & The Cavaliers (2.700), Blue Stars (2.550), Music City (2.300), and Crossmen (2.250). Scores are still trending high compared to 2018. You have to go all the way down to #8 to find a 2018 corps outscoring a 2019 corps. Another interesting tidbit: There was a tie in the #2 spot last year as well at this point and Blue Devils were in the #6 spot this time last year as well as they do their extended early season rehearsal block. We saw a number of season debuts: Blue Knights at #9, Pacific Crest at #19, Genesis at #21, Gold at #23, Raiders at #24, Vessel at #26, Encorps at #27, Watchmen at #28, and Incognito at #31.
  3. June 26 Run-Down Another night with only one show. Boston Crusaders had the largest score increase at 2.150, pushing up into the #2 spot although the next several corps have been out of competition for a few nights. All attention is really moving to the 28th when Blue Knights, Pacific Crest, and Genesis make their season debuts, Encorps makes its DCI debut, and all but one (The Academy) of the current 9-15 ranked corps compete head-to-head.
  4. June 25 Run-Down Bluecoats returned to competition with a 3.550 point increase, moving the corps back into the top spot. Colts defeated Madison Scouts head-to-head for the second time in three opportunities. Note that the 18 to 19 comparison varies by a couple of days as I try to line up the off days. In 2018, there was an off day on Tuesday, June 26 and in 2019 that off day comes on Thursday, June 27. I try to keep things aligned so that the weekends/regionals are always comparable.
  5. June 24 Run-Down Boston Crusaders saw the largest point increase (3.100) after a day off. Phantom Regiment had the second highest score increase and did not have a day off in between shows (2.300). Although the rankings make it appear that Bluecoats have fallen considerably, let us remember that the corps is still undefeated and has not competed since June 22. That changes tonight. Spirit of Atlanta debuted in the #11 spot, making the 10-14 range, minimally, quite a battle. Music City debuted at #18. This puts Spirit two spots ahead of its starting position in 2018 and Music City one spot ahead.
  6. No I didn't. Boston did not compete at that show in 2017; the run down was only corps that had three years of data.
  7. June 23 Run-Down In head-to-head competition Colts defeated Madison Scouts by 2.050 points after losing the night before by 1.100. Given the proximity to the #12 spot in the rankings for these two corps, this could become a fun battle to watch as the season progresses. Blue Devils narrowed the gap with Santa Clara Vanguard to just 0.400 points, the smallest of the season so far. Crossmen had the largest score increase (2.800) followed by two other corps in the same show: Colts (2.550) and The Cadets (2.100). The only corps to decrease in score was Madison Scouts (-0.600). The first weekend of the season is behind us. Just one show per night for the next three nights and then an off day before things gear up again. The mos significant storyline is likely how Boston Crusaders line up with Carolina Crown tonight for the first time since the premiere show and then Bluecoats tomorrow night.
  8. June 22 Run-Down With three shows and 15 world class corps in action, June 22 is the busiest day of the season until June 28 when we will see 20 at once. Scores increased the most at the Madison, WI show with Carolina Crown improving by 1.750 and Blue Stars by 1.450. Based on Detroit's head-to-head scores, these are likely to fall back in line with where Bluecoats, Boston Crusaders, The Cadets, and Phantom Regiment (0.250-0.700) at tonight's Zionsville show. That said, Blue Devils C had the highest night-over-night improvement (1.850) and no corps decreased. Crossmen debuted in the top 12 at #11. Madison Scouts and Colts debuted just outside the top 12 at #13 and #14 respectively. Blue Knights is the only 2018 finalist not to have competed yet. Based on the fact they have never missed finals at Lucas Oil Stadium, it is safe to assume that they will be in the hunt for one of the finalist spots along with Spirit of Atlanta, coming off a 13th place finish in 2018. We should be able to make some head-to-head comparisons regarding the bottom grouping of the top 12 over the next few nights, but we will have to wait until June 28 to see where Blue Knights work in to the equation.
  9. June 21 Run-Down Last year's champion Santa Clara Vanguard earns the top spot on its first night of 2019 competition with a 0.650 lead over Blue Devils in head-to-head competition. The top scoring corps from Detroit finds itself in the #3 spot now with all the usual disclaimers about comparing scores from show to show. The top 5 are separated by 2.150 in 2019 compared to 1.950 in 2018. However, if you look at the top 6 instead, there's a spread of 2.300 in 2019 versus 3.000 in 2018. As you can see below, scores are way up in the debut shows of 2019 compared to 2018. The only corps with a decrease year over year is Phantom Regiment. Opening scores tend to be a reflection of the previous year's finals' placement order and the large opening score increase for Mandarins and decrease for Phantom Regiment seems to follow that trend. 2019 Debut vs. 2018 Debut vs. 2017 Debut (Two premiere shows only for corps that performed in all three years' worth) Santa Clara Vanguard - 72.350 vs. 70.700 vs. 70.050 = +1.650 in 2019 Blue Devils - 71.700 vs. 71.300 vs. 71.750 = +0.400 in 2019 Bluecoats - 71.150 vs. 70.300 vs. 72.300 = +0.850 in 2019 Carolina Crown - 70.900 vs. 70.000 vs. 70.950 = +0.900 in 2019 The Cavaliers - 70.200 vs. 69.350 vs. 70.150 = +0.850 in 2019 Mandarins - 67.100 vs. 62.950 vs. 60.500 = +4.150 in 2019 Blue Stars - 65.450 vs. 62.000 vs. 64.150 = +3.450 in 2019 The Academy - 64.600 vs. 61.550 vs. 63.650 = +3.050 in 2019 Phantom Regiment - 63.250 vs. 64.000 vs. 64.650 = -0.750 in 2019 Blue Devils B - 57.600 vs. 55.850 vs. 57.850 = +1.750 in 2019 Vanguard Cadets = 54.900 vs. 52.700 vs. 55.150 = +2.200 in 2019 Blue Devils C = 41.400 vs. 36.550 vs. 44.950 = +4.850 in 2019
  10. Welcome to DCI 2019! June 20 Run-Down For the third year in a row, Bluecoats open up the season in first place with Carolina Crown right behind them. The gap of 0.250 is the smallest of the three years. The six corps in competition on night one finished in the same order they did the night of the last competition in Indianapolis.
  11. I don't know if I'll be able to get there in time for Phantom, but I'm heading to Regal in North Brunswick, NJ. Being able to purchase an assigned seat at a very reasonable price point made it worth the risk!
  12. Madison Scouts - The 16th place finish in 2018 bookends the LOS-era when they placed 15th in 2009. This is significantly lower than the corps' average placement in that time frame of 11.3, however their average performance in the last three years is 13.7. There's no reason to think they would be lower than 16th in 2019 based on historical performance but it would take a change of trend to get back into finals' contention. LOS Range - 8-16; LOS average - 11.3; 3 year average - 13.7 Troopers - Troopers have placed 17th the past two years, just one place better than their LOS worst placement of 18th in 2012. The corps' average placement in the LOS era is 14.7 with a worse than that 16.0 average over the past three years. LOS Range - 12-18; LOS average - 14.7; 3 year average - 16.0 Pacific Crest - Like Troopers, Pacific Crest has placed below its LOS average (18.8) for several years in a row with an average placement of 20.0 over the past three years. LOS Range - 16-21; LOS average - 18.8; 3 year average - 20.0 Music City - Music City has been on an upward trend. Their average placement all time at Lucas Oil Stadium is 26.8 with a range of 21st to 32nd. The last two years have been their best two finishes at 24th (2017) and 21st (2018). LOS Range - 21-32; LOS average - 26.8; 3 year average - 24.0 Genesis - Genesis has been very consistent with finishes between 22-24 for the past six years in a row. The LOS average is 24.6 and the last three years' average is 23.3. Very consistent. LOS Range - 22-30; LOS average - 24.6; 3 year average - 23.3 Seattle Cascades - 2018 tied this corps' lowest performance at LOS at 27th (also in 2013). The average the past three years (25.0) is just about what it is for the full LOS time period (24.5). LOS Range - 22-27; LOS average - 24.5; 3 year average - 25.0 Jersey Surf - This corps also had its lowest placement at LOS in 2018 at 30th. Each of the past four years have been below the corps' average placement. LOS Range - 20-30; LOS average - 24.1; 3 year average - 27.7
  13. A beautiful tribute from the Vanguard organization. I thought it was very interesting to see the performers' previous affiliations listed. I was a little surprised to see how many former members of The Cavaliers ended up at Santa Clara Vanguard.
  14. I contributed mostly because I love this approach to asking for donations in order to gradually reveal details of the show. I think it's a great way to make the "ask" fun and engaging.
  15. I joined at the Silver level for the first time. When should I expect to be contacted about seats?
  16. They have no burden of proof. It is a private organization that gets to set its own policies for how new organizations get associated. We don't have to like it, but only the corps directors can change it. My suggestion would be making your opinion known to the corps directors serving on the board.
  17. Keep in mind that according to this article, Joel's teaching license was suspended in 2011 for a period of at least five years. That suggests that he may be legally allowed to work as a teacher in the State at this time. If that's the case, does it change how people view his participation in drum corps? I suspect the answers are mixed. This is extremely tricky territory.
  18. Some Items of Note: July 13 is the first date when all 22 World Class corps compete on the same day. The others are July 20, July 27, and August 8. Excluding the impact of Oregon Crusaders & Pioneer, there are a total of 26 fewer World Class corps performances in 2019 than 2018. The average number of performances per corps in 2018 was 26; in 2019, it is 25. Boston Crusaders decrease the most from 30 to 25 followed by Blue Knights (27 to 23) and Crossmen (28 to 24). Music City increases the most from 21 to 24. No other corps increased by more than 1 show. The Cadets will appear in the most shows at 30 followed by Blue Stars and Bluecoats at 29. Seattle Cascades will appear in the fewest shows at 18 followed by Jersey Surf at 20. Blue Knights is the final 2019 finalist to debut on June 28. Last year’s medalists will compete head-to-head for the first time July 16 in Broken Arrow, OK. The best June indicator of potential placements will be June 29 when all but two corps are in action (Jersey Surf and Seattle Cascades). For anyone interested in seeing a grid version of the schedule with total show tallies by corps and date, you can access it here.

  21. Thank you! I just have inadvertently carried that language over from the template I created for the 2010s. I'll adjust!
  22. On the one-year anniversary of 9/11, members of Crossmen and The Cadets traveled to Richmond, Virginia on Nascar's dime to perform The National Anthem and God Bless America. I remember getting picked up a rest stop on I-95, the police escort into the stadium, rehearsing for a few hours, and the amazing opportunity to reunite one last time with people who I never expected to get the chance to perform with again. Getting together one month after finals was an amazing "one more time" bonus performance, especially for such an emotional reason. The video is titled 2002 Crossmen - God Bless America @ NASCAR for those looking for it...
