I remember the guy from Madison on mallets--he had all the chicks! Not that it's a good trade off or anything, but it's a great lemonade story.
Finally a thread where I can tell this one--
Back in '94 I was working at GC in San Jose which had two levels, drums being on the second. This kid rolls in on his wheelchair and asks if he can check out some drums sticks and we say sure. We turn around to look closer at this young man--he has no arms, or legs. So we ask with puzzled faces what the deal is and he explains that he is a snare drummer in his HS marching band.
Holy cow, we say. We tried to pick him up with his chair to get him to the upper floor but quickly realize it was just too heavy. So we bring down some sticks and a snare. This kid maneuvers the sticks so he can play with the shoulder blades he had left, and proceeds to drum. And of course the kid throws down to the point of a clinic. We stood there is such disbelief that we didn't know whether to clap or cry. Talk about spirit!
After he left, there was a general good feeling permeating the store. No one felt sorry for this kid but rather he sort of lit up the rest of us. Made us think about how much we have, what we take for granted, etc. Maudlin, I know but that was the greatest display of "I think I can" that I ever witnessed. Always wondered what happened to that guy...
