  1. Musically, I think plenty of shows would work just fine in this manner. Visual would obviously have to receive a different treatment just from a numbers standpoint as anything from BITD or even from not too far back would delve into the days of 128 maximum members where we now have 150.
  2. Obviously, as an alumnus, Carolina Crown would be my favorite, as I'd imagine most folks would say of the corps where they marched. Outside of that, I'd have to probably say SCV. I remember an off-day when I marched the summer of '98 at the midwestern regional when we were dropped off at the stadium to watch the shows, wander around, etc. I remember just loving their show "The Modernist" that year and thought I'd take the opportunity to watch their hornline warmup. I stayed from visual block all the way through their warmups and was just floored by the presence and attitude they maintained even when no one was watching. That has stayed with me all these years.
  3. Well, being the dork that I am, I checked into the artist and his history with any composers. What I came up with is this. "Entr'acte", roughly translated, "Between the Acts" was a short surrealist film he played a brief part in. This film was used quite literally as a transition between the acts of an avant garde ballet called "Relache" with music by Eric Satie. Source material for their show? Maybe... I will be thrilled if I managed to make the right tangential leaps and guessed this correctly.
  4. Could you guys please pin the 2012 corps repertoire thread? It's about time for show announcements to start rolling in and it's difficult to constantly search a page or two back for the posting. I seem to remember the topic being pinned in the past, it just makes a lot of sense. Thanks.
  5. I'll be attending Fan Network. I'll be heading to Atlanta to get my live fix. I'll wander the Nightbeat lot and watch warmups and such. I'll wish, once again, that I could make the trip to finals week. Such is life. It's all good.
  6. Agreed, I liked the elevator a lot. Also, the one around Christmas when they did the double take marching past the nutcracker soldiers. The rest not so much.
  7. OK, I'll go. Brass - Star 1991 Percussion - Star 1993 (no contest here IMO) Visual - Cadets 2011 Guard - Not enough knowledge to comment
  8. Well, look-wise, they are a definite improvement. How do they sound, though?
  9. Well, it has caused DCP to argue vehemently already. Must mean that the judges will LOVE IT!
  10. Crown was openly inviting folks to their final ensemble rehearsal of the weekend on facebook. Was anyone able to attend that can give us any tidbits?
  11. '92 was absolutely awesome and coincidentally the percussion break into the loud horns was the FIRST thing I ever heard from DCI. Of course, it certainly wasn't anywhere near the last.
  12. 91 for sure of those two choices. I've always been a huge fan of the '95 show and would really love to see that one done again with less slop. I think they could've easily scooped up the championship that year were it not for getting a bit sloppy at the end.
  13. The music from Skyrim is amazing. One could very easily build a show around that material, or several. To those of you that think electronic music is just a bunch of "untz untz", you might want to dig deeper, electronic music is far beyond repetitive dance rhythms these days. There is a lot of harmonic and melodically interesting stuff out there if one cares to dig a bit.
  14. I marched 3 years at Crown, 96-98. Following the 97 season, I was offered a "free" spot with the Cavaliers if I could make it to camps, etc. I was excited at the prospect, but could not feasibly make the drive/flight to Chicago for the camps as I was a South Carolina resident. Hence, it never happened. In fact, I was resigned to not marching that season at all due to school/financial constraints. During everydays, I went to check in on my friends and watch some rehearsal. I was told there was a contra hole and some sponsorship money if I wanted to fill it. So... long story short, I quit my summer job the next day, did the last day of everyday rehearsals and learned the show during the first week of tour. This ended up being my last season marching even though I had two more years of eligibility. I'm glad I did it. As for not marching until my age-out, that was a double-edged sword. I'm sure I would've loved my experience had I marched, but I spent the following two summers performing in another capacity and learned a lot about performing in a professional setting. Also an experience I wouldn't trade, though I do sometimes wonder what might have been... especially considering the fact that had I made the Cavaliers thing happen AND marched through my age-out, my age-out show would have been Niagara Falls.... se la vide.
  15. Safe travels. I'll find my way to Championships at some point. I've wanted to make it to both Allentown and finals week for quite some time. I haven't been to either since my last year as a MM in 1998. Have a blast and enjoy your break.
  16. So, you're saying that something that is intense and fiery can't also be fun??? I beg to differ. Plently of drum corps that was/is intense was/is also fun. Examples: 88 Scouts 91 Star (Sorry, those helmets were fun, and so was all that running, both the feet and the horns) 95 Cadets 97 Scouts That BD Tommy show, and their dance competition show sorry can't remember years (really bad at remembering the years of their shows for some reason) '08, '09, and '11 Crown (Sorry dude that hornline is intense, and all three of those are fun shows don't care what you say) I'm sure there are countless other examples, this was just quick and off the top of my head. I, like you, also tend to like the shows that have the "angry" BAMF vibe a bit more myself, but I think it's a bit of a misnomer to say a show that is fun can't also be intense. Furthermore, I think this year's Crown production has struck an excellent balance between the two.
  17. It MUST be the last week of the season as everyone has turned into a batch of Whiney McWhinerson Namecallinskis. Go DCI!
  18. Thanks, folks. Just something that I've never noticed before.
  19. Ok, upon further inspection, it appears that is only the tubas that have the pin on in this manner. Anyone know why?
  20. I was checking out the Vanguard photos that were recently posted on their facebook page and noticed that the star pin on most folks was placed right over the upper left portion of the jacket. If you look through the photos, a few members have the star right on the center of their chest. Anyone know the reason for this? Ageouts maybe? Rookies maybe? Or just inattention to where the star was placed (doubtful).
  21. This poll is missing several possibilities. I think you need AT LEAST three options for each of these places. The last week has shown a lot of movement around these key spots and lots of changes are likely to be debuted this weekend, which could have an effect on the outcome of championship week.
  22. This is what drum corps is REALLY all about. If our communities and, god forbid, our government, took this attitude toward life, the world would be a better place.
  23. When I was a member of Crown, our rehearsals were fairly "hardcore", as in always run back to sets, don't talk, focus, etc. Judging solely from the ensemble rehearsal I watched Monday evening, they are a bit more relaxed these days. Still very focused and fast-paced but in a calm and quiet fashion rather than a grit teeth and eat nails fashion.
